Can you try with 1.19.1 RC2? Please provide step-by-step repro if this still occurs. Thx.

Hi, Bridie. This issue DOES persists in 1.19.1 RC2. The bug is related to MacOS's input method handling and you need to activate input method to reproduce this bug, although the original report by Arare was unclear on the point.

The following is a solid step-by-step repro. You don't need Japanese version of MacOS nor Japanese keyboard to reproduce the issue. However, you need to activate Apple's Japanese input method (kotoeri) to follow the steps. Even if you are running English version of MacOS, Kotoeri should be installed on your Macintosh HD, unless you explicitly removed it upon MacOS installation.

PREPARATION:

  • Open "International" on "System Preferences..." on your Macintosh desktop. Choose "Input Menu".
  • Activate Kotoeri by checking the box before it. Adjust Kotoeri optional modes so that only the Romaji and Hiragana are active. (See International.png.)
  • Make sure all other keyboard, including US keyboard layout, are disabled.

REPRODUCTION STEPS:

  • Start SL viewer. Wait for the login screen to appear.
  • Make sure Romaji is selected as an active keyboard. (See Keyboard.png.)
  • Use TAB key or Shift-TAB to put your keyboard focus on the "First name" (or Last name) field.
  • Press "A" key on the keyboard.
  • OBSERVED: The viewer crashes.
= EXPECTED: A letter "A" appears on the name field without crashing the viewer.

SOME ANALYSIS:

If you execute the above reproduction steps under a debugger, you will see that the crash is deep in the MacOS's text input handling subsystem. (See the stack trace Debugger.png.) So I consider this is my area...

For your record, the following is the configuration that I tested this issue. It's an Intel Mac mini running MacOS X 10.4.11.

I confirmed that this issue is exactly the same thing as VWR-5496.
