Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-14748

 Description  « Hide
The only viewer I can use is 1.18.3.5.
Everything after that has had the same problems every time I try a viewer, and with all of my alts the same issues, in different locations on the grid.

1) Groups don't load up unless I force them by starting a Search. And even then sometimes that doesn't work. As I'm heavily dependent on access to my Group info and tools - not having this facility makes the viewer completely unusable.

2) I can't upload any files which makes operating my business completely impossible.

3) I get grey-screen'd on tp ing anywhere with the exception of a few dozen feet away.

4) Can't save notecards

In latest RC,
1) media doesn't change as I move between parcels on my sim
2) the viewer doesn't recognise when I pass from one parcel to the next unless I stay there for at least 5 minutes, and even then the music doesn't change with the changed parcel
3) once the parcel changes over, I still don't have access to the About Land info on that parcel.

Hi,

are you on wireless access by any chance?

shai khalifa added a comment - 20/Mar/08 02:01 PM
not wireless, hard connection 1500/256 and I never get anywhere near my download capacity

shai khalifa added a comment - 20/Mar/08 03:31 PM
I just downloaded RC 1.19.1 (2) to see whether any of my issues had settled them selves - but no joy.

1. On login my groups didn't list until I forced it with a Search (this field displays as None until forced to list). (Friends list displayed without problem on this login)

2. After groups listed my parcel was then displayed in the top bar on window, but I had no access to any of the About Land fields (all greyed).

3. Attempted to save a notecard after adding a single line to an existing one. Got the following message: Unable to upload [UUID] due to the following reason. Server experiencing unexpected difficulties. Please try later.

4. Attempted to upload a single image file. Got the same message.

I didn't attempt to tp (which generally fails when all of the above are in evidence) as I needed to keep some info in Clipboard memory - so can't verify that it still doesn't work.

Please note that I also have these same issues reported under my Alt account - Phaedra Basevi

@Shai, points 2-4 sound like you are not connected the grid, although 1 suggests that you are connected. Do 2-4 occur when you first log-in?

Strife Onizuka added a comment - 20/Mar/08 05:38 PM
over zealous firewall rules?

shai khalifa added a comment - 20/Mar/08 07:07 PM
Mercia - 2 and 4 don't work for me at all, and I've stayed in the viewer for over an hour to test them at times

Strife - if it was a firewall, then why is that in 1.18.3.5 all these functions work flawlessly for me (lag and crashing and memory leaks notwithstanding)?

These problems only started with 1.18.5 for me - but the 1.19 series added the About Land issue

aric linden added a comment - 25/Mar/08 11:49 AM
These do sound like firewall issues. I'd be more likely to believe it though, if you hadn't successfully used 1.18.5. Have you tried clearing both your local and server caches? I'd do that next, that could easily be the problem.

thanks

Love to hear about the firewall config and whether this is still a problem.

shai khalifa added a comment - 02/Apr/08 12:15 AM
THIS ISSUE IS NOT FIXED

Please don't close it until it's sorted - until you've checked with me that it's not a problem any more.

The issue is not my firewall - I have no problem with 1.18.3.5 - so if you've changed anything in the viewers since then - TELL ME.

I am having exactly the same issues as described here, to the T, on every viewer after 1.18.3. I do not have a firewall coonected. A Linden techie highjacked my account to troubleshoot and couldn't duplicate from his machine. He suggested it may be an AT&T firewall on my 2wire..which I don't have access to. I will call AT&T
But I have the same question as Shai:
"if it was a firewall, then why is that in 1.18.3.5 all these functions work flawlessly for me (lag and crashing and memory leaks notwithstanding)?"

shai khalifa added a comment - 02/May/08 03:02 PM
Just to clear a few things up -

Now using the 1.20 series of RC viewers - currently 1.20.5

Every single issue is still present with a few more I've noticed.

  • Can't save edited gestures.
  • While my main account (Shai Khalifa) has no access to Group functionality, my alt account (Phaedra Basevi - which is a free account since I downgraded her) has full access to Groups - We have similar sized inventories as I used Phaedra to run one of my enterprises, and Shai to run another.
  • The same thing happens with access to About Land information (which still has to be forced for both accounts).

It isn't my firewall - because I don't have one on on my Mac. And when I turned the firewall off on my broadband provider end and tried SL - exactly the same issues were apparent.

Workarounds:
To save notecards - I have discovered that I can save notecards that are in objects - so I created an object, dragged a notecard in it. Edited that notecard and saved it successfully. Renamed it and dragged it back into my inventory. Voila!!! notecard issue worked around.

This doesn't work for gestures though.

To move from sim to sim - log out then back in to the Region you want to go to - then tp to the place you want to go. Unfortunately you may log into someone's house which may require some explanation - and if the region login is into a banned area, you can't get to the region at all.

What I've done to try to resolve this issue on my side:
I doubled my bandwidth a month ago - no change
I doubled my DRAM to 2 gig 2 weeks ago - SL runs smooth as a baby's bum, but the issues are still there.
Installed Fusion and loaded Windows - Fusion won't run 3D graphics intensive programs on Tiger, but may on Leopard if you partition your drive with Bootcamp (no need to load Windows in partition if you have Fusion. Whether SL runs is still to be tested.

What I've still to do:
Install Leopard to see if the updated OpenGL interface resolves the issues
Try the Bootcamp/Fusion combination so that I still have access to both my Mac and SL at the same time.

I've changed the Affected Versions on this entry as it's all still there in the 1.20 series of RC

shai - thanks for all the feedback and debugging. I've imported this issue and we'll take a look internally. Your patience is appreciated. I'll keep you posted and it won't be resolved until you're comfortable.

Did a totally clean install of Leopard after scrubbing my harddrive clean.

Loaded a brand new Mac version of the main viewer - no change
Loaded a brand new Mac version of the latest RC (1.20.5) - no change - with the exception that I had access to Group functionality (only)

Partitioned drive with Bootcamp
Loaded Windows XP Home
Loaded new PC version of the main viewer - lo and behold it works with full functionality except for the little micropauses everyone using this combination seem to have.
Loaded latest RC - everything works - micropauses seem to have disappeared.

Loaded the bootcamp partition into Fusion - SL stil won't run - won't read the graphics card/drivers (this is a Fusion issue) . This means I can't run both systems simultaneously so that I have access to my Mac software.
____________________________________________________
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE USE OF PC VERSION OF VIEWER WITHIN BOOTCAMP IS NOT - I repeat NOT - A SOLUTION.

IT IS A WORKAROUND ONLY - and if Linden Lab consider it to be a total solution for Mac users those responsible should be taken out an shot.

I am not alone in being affected by this litany of issues Gypsy is only one of a number of people who have contacted me direct to discuss the fact that they have EXACTLY the same issues i've been having - and we all have different hardware and software setups.

The only common denominator is the fact that we're on Mac machines. So the problem is not necessarily readily reproducable. But if you talk to Gypsy Tripsa and to Bud Noel - for a start - they will provide you with exactly the same list of issues - on multiple machines and software setups.

I've just seen on the blog for the new RC that the 2Wire broadband modem may be a contributing factor to the issues I've had here.

The post on the blog is from Stephani Honi .

Is it possible that at the change from 1.18.3.5 something to do with the 2Wire modem changed??? and that this hasn't been addressed in any of the viewer updates since????

My 2Wire is model 2071-A

Linking as related to SVC-972. Yes, this seems to have been introduced with asynchronous DNS also.

You can try configuring your computer to use your ISP's nameservers directly instead of using the 2Wire router's DNS. This has solved the problem for others.

Shai, I am seeing the very same issues as you described, and I would tend to believe this bug is the same issue as SVC-972
  • Groups don't appear until search, and sometimes not even then.
  • About Land fields unavailable for edit
  • Notecards and Snapshots cannot be saved
  • File uploads fail

Lindens:
Would you care to share the workaround involving the use of DNS with regard to the 2WIRE unit? Thanks.

I believe that I have found a configuration fix for this problem.
