Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-18895

 Description  « Hide
People search removes any query word that is less than 2 characters. This makes it hard to search for avatars that truly have first names with less than 2 characters, like the new CEO M Linden or Q Linden.

New All search still works and is a workaround for this (though it does not update as quickly).

Repro:

1) Bring up old People Search
2) Search for Q Linden
Observed Results:
- Search returns all Lindens starting with Adreanne
Expected Results:
= Search returns two Lindens starting with Q

=== Original Summary and Description ===
Specific Search (People, Places, etc) queries are modified and words less then 3 characters are removed.
In 1.19.1 RC0 searches in specific categories (people, places, groups, etc) remove any query word that is less than 3 characters. This makes it hard to search for things, places, events, avatars, etc. that truly have words with less than 3 characters. This happens in all old search categories.

Same issues with places. Open Search, Search for "Close up"

On Trialle - 08/Mar/08 03:39 AM
If this is not to change back, then new accounts should not be allowed to have first names with less than two characters. This account was made today and then no-one could find me other than searching via a group. Thanks for the hint that Search All works, note that Search All (Old) also finds me.

This is a shame I think the best name in SL is Uh Oh and no search under people can be performed for him/her now.

Ran Garrigus - 08/Mar/08 05:28 AM
This is a real issue. Not only do people with names only 1 or 2 letters long get lost, but there are many businesses, locations, etc. that incorporate two-letter words in their name (like ... House of <anything>). This is no good and needs to be fixed post-haste.

Mercia Mcmahon - 08/Mar/08 05:34 AM
@Ran, "House of" is not affected, like Google it ignores the small words and searches for just the longer ones, so "of" is not a problem. On the other hand "The River Po" or the "Temple of Ra" would face problems. It is only is the name is made up entirely of 1-2 character words (e.g, Uh Oh) that no search is preformed.

If this is to remain how about adding to the warning dialogue "to search for words less than two characters use Search All or Search All (Old)".

Damen Gorilla - 08/Mar/08 05:42 AM
Mercia, try "adam n eve"..............using the search places tab.

Just like Google it will ignore the "n" but then it searches for "adam eve" and NOT adam+eve, thus returning no results.

So yes, it is a problem specifically for me and my business.

ZATZAi Asturias - 08/Mar/08 05:49 AM
Ah, stop words rears it's head?

Tillie Ariantho - 08/Mar/08 05:53 AM
ThHis is not a mayor issue, this is a show stopper, because it would kill business for several stores completely.

Ran Garrigus - 08/Mar/08 05:56 AM
Mercia,

I noted "House of <Anything>", like "House of Style" wouldn't work. You're right, if you just put in "House of", you'd get a bunch of things with "House" in it (but probably not with what you're actually looking for, like a clothing designer's business, very readily).

Ran Garrigus - 08/Mar/08 05:59 AM
Changed this to 'Critical', since it has a major negative impact on a lot of users, locations, businesses, etc.

Arbella Dragonash - 08/Mar/08 06:12 AM

This id really daft..lots of places who use slang or dialect like "n" will be affected. I'll go to the foot of our stairs!

Jana Fleming - 08/Mar/08 07:08 AM
This needs to be fixed before it is rolled out as the standard, mandated viewer

Lex Neva - 08/Mar/08 10:11 AM
This could even open up possibilities for griefing. How can I ban someone if I can't easily find them in search?

Torley Linden - 10/Mar/08 11:25 AM
We made a deliberate change earlier because short queries were causing database load -- thanks a lot for reporting this and adding to the conversation, I'm going to bring this to the attention of our devs.

Day Oh - 14/Mar/08 01:18 AM
You can't search for me in the people directory because my last name is too short, isn't that cool?

McCabe Maxsted - 17/Mar/08 06:27 PM
I just encountered this bug today and literally smacked my palm to my forehead. Was no one aware that people have one and two letter first names?

Workaround: apparently searching All still brings up relevant results.

Torley Linden - 18/Mar/08 08:57 AM
It's a good thing we have Release Candidates so you can inform us of these mistakes, right? Again, thanks -- in 1.19.1.2, this should be improved so that:

     * Loosened limit for people to 2 char names.

     * Removed char length limit for groups/people as long as the search string (minus leading/trailing white space) is >= 3 chars.

We'll continue to refine things as time goes on, very much in tune with your welcome criticism!

Harleen Gretzky - 20/Mar/08 12:14 PM
1.19.1.2 fixes this for the most part, you still cannot search for people with one character names like "Q Linden", but all names with 2 or more characters works. And groups/places appears fixed for any length.

With the new CEO being named M Linden, this issue seems to have acquired a new urgency. Cant have people not find the CEO's profile, now can we :-)

Ramzi Linden - 05/Aug/08 04:41 PM
I am working to synchronize our internal tracking with the Public Issue Tracker.

This issue was originally opened as a problem in searching and finding Residents with 2-character names; that issue was fixed in 1.19.1.4 viewer. Internally we are tracking that issue as Fixed and Closed.

However I notice that you have modified the bug report to indicate there are problems that result from not being able to find 1-character names. Since that is a new issue we have not previously been tracking internally, I have assigned THIS report to a new internal ID.

Ramzi Linden - 05/Aug/08 04:44 PM
I am lowering the priority to suggest Major or Normal.... a) because this issue has a workaround mentioned above, and b) no Residents (I believe) have a name with only 1 character, so this should not be critically affecting any inworld businesses. Please comment here if that is incorrect.

will webb - 07/Aug/08 10:34 AM
M Linden, the new CEO, does (cf supra); I think he should be searchable, don't you ?
