Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-5892

 Description  « Hide
Solid black, as well as "test" patterns and even unrelated patterns (yellow daisy, heiniken logo, etc.) textures coming up on prims, avatar meshes, and ground at random.

Example photo with notes: http://www.flickr.com/photos/marianne-mccann/473569783/

Seems to affect numerous standard Macintosh configurations.

I'm having this problem as well, with the standard viewer 1.16 on a G4 iBook (last version, 2005).

But the problem does not persist in the First Look Viewer for some reason. Either because it runs with standard GFX settings and I simply have changed something crucial in there, or because of the viewer update.

The problem has also existed in 1.15 main viewer.

@Marianne: Can you please post your system configuration?

Others affected, please post yours too.

Autumn Palen added a comment - 11/Jun/07 11:17 AM
I can confirm both Marianne's and Xara's experience. Since the first log-in with the 1.15 viewer I have experienced the random black or misapplied textures 100% of the time to varying degrees, which has continued in the 1.16 viewer. Have yet to detect any reproducible pattern, however the black/misapplied texture bug seems to happen less when I am in crowded areas. Often walking within a few meters of the mis-textured object, clicking on it, or rotating my camera view will force the correct texture to display for a short period of time. Never experienced this prior to the 1.15 release.

However with both of the recent First Look Windlight viewers, this texture problem does not occur.

Ibook G4, 1.2 Ghz, 512 MB SDRAM, OS X 10.4.9.

This may be the same as an old issue which we thought was gone, but has been reopened. Will link 'em up.

Liz Ferlinghetti added a comment - 21/Jun/07 11:02 PM
I started getting this problem last night. Initially my avie's arms went black and the detail disappeared from the make-up on the face. Then various textures would suddenly change into red/green/yellow stripes. Later, whole texture blocks would suddenly go black. In each case all instances of a texture would change - ie if a particular textures is used on several prims they all changed to a stripey texture or to black.

This is happening in 1.17 - haven't had it before.

I'm runnning on an Acer Aspire 5630 laptop, 1.5gb ram, Vista

Liz Ferlinghetti added a comment - 22/Jun/07 05:10 AM
I'm getting both these at the same time and they have appeared within the same timeframe

Liz Ferlinghetti added a comment - 22/Jun/07 07:32 AM
An addition to the above - I've just logged at work with a diffferent machine (Dell GX620, 3gb ram, Windows XP Pro) and I still have black arms.

Liz Ferlinghetti added a comment - 24/Jun/07 08:18 AM
As I can't get much work done with this issue getting in the way I've taken some shots which you can see at:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ferlinghetti/sets/72157600464851436/

I've confirmed with other users that they can see the same thing when my avie goes black. The problem remains even when working on different machines. Also have it happening when working in latest stable viewer and First Look.

Zaphod Kotobide added a comment - 25/Jun/07 08:32 AM
Me too, suddenly. Avatar is all black, eyes, non-prim clothing included. Only thing not black are prim hair and prim shoes. Rebaking texture does not fix, removing clothes, nothing seems to work. This system is not to specs, but has worked "okay" prior to today. I did notice however that whenever I went into appearance editor, this would happen. It would clear when I closed the editor. Now, I'm all black, all the time. (Garbled textures in appearance editor by the way.)

Update:

http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=333 turned out to be my issue. I run the client on a secondary monitor here at the office. Didn't have to log out, just drug the viewer window over to the primary monitor, rebaked, and all is well. Interesting.

ziggy figaro added a comment - 10/Jul/07 01:12 AM
I'm having the same problem – been having it ever since I bought a brand-new iMac in February, a couple of weeks after joining in late January. Is there a fix for this?

The problem has persisted on every First Look and main browser I've tried, and the current voice First Look.

I really can't tell you what the pattern is for when this happens and when it doesn't. Seems to be worse if I make the window bigger – but that may just be my imagination, or may be me noticing it more. I haven't detected any correlation to whether this is more likely to happen when I move around vs. stand still, when I am in a crowded vs. a quiet area. I think it happens more if I move the viewpoint around, either through av movements or by camming, but I couldn't swear to it. Likewise, I think the problem is mitigated - at least for a while – if I clear the cache and relog. It's possible that the problem might be mitigated if I shut down other programs while running Second Life - but, again, I can't be sure.

I am NOT using a multi-monitor setup.

Am linking this to other instances of similar bugs, and will hopefully assign to someone?

ziggy figaro added a comment - 13/Jul/07 01:23 PM
Thanks, Gillian.

I've been able to effect a partial workaround by switching off Synergy, which is open source software that lets you control multiple computers with a single keyboard and mouse; and switching off vertex rendering.

That eliminates most, but not all, of the problem.

But it does not solve the problem, it's just a workaround. I lose all the attractive water effects that way. And doing without Synergy is a significant handicap for me; makes it hard to access my other computer.

ziggy figaro added a comment - 13/Jul/07 01:25 PM
Also, even with those workarounds in place, I still get a significant amount of texture problems.

putting clothes sometimes turns avatar black from the neck down. Taking off all clothes only returns the body to skin colour from the waist down (torso and arms remain black). Putting on a new clothes item momentarily clears the problem (for about 1 second) then reverts back to black. Turning off Vertex rendering does not seem to help.

Just bought new Mac. Textures flipping all over the place. On AV, buildings, terrain...random textures, sometimes related to surroundings, sometimes not (it seems). Also AV black from waist down or waist up. No obvious pattern. Sometimes slight, sometimes extensive.

Is this bug any closer to being resolved?

I spend $US60 on land rental and thousands of lindens in in-world merchandise, and I'd like to get better service for my money. This is extremely frustrating.

Holy13 Writer added a comment - 06/Aug/07 11:52 AM
Got worse with me recently. Seems to happen more often with stuff I own and on my own land. Then again, all hell can break loose in a completely new sim. Trees are always affected most often but recently experienced my face template as the ground for all the land I owned on Dreamworld South and my hud making up the ocean floor in Hinterlands Orkney sim. Would be impossible to repro as it is so random. Have experimented with all manner of toggling graphics combinations/rebaking etc. Will add pics soon.

jacques susanti added a comment - 07/Aug/07 03:27 AM
Yes it seems to be getting worse , and indeed worst of all with my own stuff and on my own land. Textures on objects and avis going black at random. Animated textures showing as stripes.
I seem to be having this problem since 1.15 or 1.16 if I recall correctly. and I can't be positive about this but it seems better (albeit relative) when SL is less crowded

It sometimes helps if I move up closer to the blackened objects. If I ask other avis to rebake they temporarily show normal only to get the coalminers look again within a matter of minutes.
Recently a seemingly related issue seems to be objects (most often walls with alpha textures) not showing at all for a minute or so. Somewhat terrifying when you live in a skyhouse.
It seems related because it starts to happen when the coalminers disease get worse, and is sometimes solved by moving closer, (while the objects next to it showed normal all the time, so it has nothing to do with drawing distance)

I have tried every setting I could think of,ran numerous tests on my graphics card and it still happens. I use a 1.33, 17 inch Powerbook, with no extra monitor.
It would be great if this could be fixed, (if I had the know-how I'd help grin) It's seriously ruining my sl experience and more and more is keeping me away.

Autumn Palen added a comment - 09/Aug/07 08:01 AM
An addendum to my comment of June 11th:

I've been running Mac OS 10.3.9 on a separate partition this past week on the same iBook G4 listed above; not once did black or misapplied textures appear during any log-in. Booting back into OS 10.4.9 and/or 10.4.10 and the texture problems reappear each time with every log-in.

Dee Firefly added a comment - 21/Aug/07 12:31 PM
I've just yesterday received a new replacement Mac, Dual proc dual core Mac Pro 2.66 Ghz, 3 Ghz RAM, Nvidia 7300GT graphics card running Mac OS 10.4.10 following failure of my old system.

I too am seeing something like this issue, mussed up alpha textures on my avatar at times on clothing layers which don't correct by any seeming repeatable process, occasionally odd prims or ground textures flashing momentarily to black, and when I cammed outside my house today to a distance of a few tens of metres, the ground was fine, but all the prim rocks kept flickering to black as I moved the cam.

My previous system, a Power Mac G5, 2 Ghz RAM, ATI X800XT graphics card did not exhibit this behaviour

Now this flickering of textures does remind me very much of some similar behaviour I reported on extensively in the forums a couple of years or so, back when I was using my then new G5 with an Nvidia 6800 Ultra graphics card. It was never satisfactorily resolved until I switched to the ATI card. This got rid of the problem.

I have an ATI X1900XT graphics card upgrade on order for my Mac Pro. If this similarly removes the issue I shall update this here in the hope that maybe that might provide a clue.

Dee Firefly added a comment - 21/Aug/07 12:42 PM
Um yeah sorry for the typo....I meant Gb of RAM, not Ghz, I'm a bit tired :o Can't seem to edit my post.

Addendum, the old issue I had also happened primarily when changing viewpoint and cam, as reported above by Ziggy for this new issue - who is also using a 7300GT graphics card I notice. I too have noticed the same thing with this new problem, which is why I harbour a suspicion there might be some commonality.

Dee Firefly added a comment - 28/Aug/07 10:49 AM
Just to conclude my comments.....

I have now switched to an ATI X1900XT card from the original Nvidia 7300GT on my Mac Pro and this has entirely cured/removed the artifact problem for me, just as switching to an ATI X800XT from an Nvidia 6800 solved the similar problem a couple of years ago on my Power Mac.

Maybe this helps with a clue, but I can't help feeling now, as then, that the problem lies somewhere in the interaction between Second Life, and the Nvidia cards/drivers. I have only seen this on Nvidia cards (on 5200/6800/7300 personally) and only when using Second Life, and for me only on the Mac, though I see there are some PC/Windows users up there reporting issues too.

Anyway, that's my two 'pennorth, hope it adds to the 'body of evidence' !

Gigs Taggart added a comment - 31/Aug/07 05:47 PM
This sounds a lot like video ram corruption. I'd suspect a bad video card or driver bug.

Logan Taov added a comment - 01/Sep/07 01:26 PM
I get this all the time, black AV, and black other things, using a MacBook Pro. Generally a few rebakes makes the AV better, but not always. I too would suspect (and at first did suspec) a bad video card, but it happens reliably on two different MacBook Pros. So, maybe it is a driver but, but it seems only to affect SL, not other video intensive programs. The Video specs are
Chipset Model: GeForce 8600M GT
Type: Display
Bus: PCIe
VRAM (Total): 256 MB
Vendor: NVIDIA (0x10de)
Device ID: 0x0407
Revision ID: 0x00a1
ROM Revision: 3175

Other AVs tell me that sometimes when I see myself black, or black-faced, or armed or legs) they do too, sometimes. Changing skin and back again, the black reappears. Oh, and I get the usual MacBook hangs and memory leaks (from 1.6 GB free down to 20Mb free, over time) from SL too, but they don't seem particularly related, to me.

jacques susanti added a comment - 09/Sep/07 09:26 AM
I have now tried it on 3 macs and on all 3 the problem remains, although least on the dual core. So for one thing it surely is not a bad video card problem strangely affecting scores of mac users.

2.0 Ghz G5 dual core, memory 2.5 GB, Graphics: 256 MB nVidia Geforce 6600

1.33 GHz 17" Powerbook, memory: 1GB, Graphics: 64 MB ATI mobility radeon 9600

733 MHz G4 memory 1GB, Graphics: 32 MB nVidia Geforce2 MX (ok, we don't have to really take that one seriously, but one never knows)

All running OS 10.4.10

Just to be sure I switched monitors between all 3, even newly installed and updated the OS and app.'s, and fiddled with every possible setting in the graphics pref's of both SL and the macs. And tried both the ethernet as well as the airport network connection. None of this makes any difference.

Blackend textures, rainbow colored textures, objects with alpha textures disappearing is now continuous on the Powerbook and just slightly less frequent on the G5, but once it starts it seems to get worse.
The weird thing is that the problem is worst on My own land (as someone mentioned before), so layman as I am, it would seem it ties in somewhere with texture caches or some such.
Hope it gets fixed soon, sl is no fun at all this way!!

On my computer it was all fine.. till one day.. that was today this started. did not change anything in my computer but I have a feeling it has something to do with task switching between SL and other heavy graphics applications.

found a little trick that seems to work to get to restore your 'black' textures.

for instance your shirt shows black

1 . Go in edit appearence
2. when in appearence select another shirt to wear
3. now change back to the one that showed black
4. leave edit appearences

this should work in about al the circumstances

Hope this helps

I hope that the fact that it has been improved in Leopard is not a reason to relax on this!!!!

I for one can't switch to Leopard for a whille because of compatibility issues with some heavy duty applications I need for my work.

Btw, it seems to have gotten better on my dual core G5 (although it suddenly pops up again sometimes) but gotten worse on my G4 Powerbook.

Happens to me as well. It's been happening since... I got this mac almost a year ago. However now its MUCH more frequent, every time I'm online.

Tree's, builds, people - anything that has a texture can have its texture switched with any other texture. Can be black textures, can be just jumbled "noise" textures, or it can be textures switching.

Here's system specs:
2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon
Nvidia 7300 GT
3 GB ram

I have exactly the same problem, it has started when I installed my newTFT screen.

In addition to the texture problem I get letters and icons such as the map icons (for sale, events...) not showing correctly and it happens every time I'm logged on.
(There are no problems with the new screen when running other applications, so it must be SL related.)

This happens with all the LL viewers (haven't tried the beta grid viewer but all the other viewers) - however I have NOT yet experienced it with the Nicholaz viewer and the OnRez viewer, they seem to use less troublesome code - so for all of you who have the same problem it may be worth trying one of those viewers

Btw, it seems to be worst with the windlight viewer for me.

Horrible "flickering" textures.

I have a problem with some of my clothing textures. All of a sudden, some of my clothes started showing up with black textures and "extended" (longer than they should be) textures. This is only happening to some of my clothes, not all.

I tried rebaking, going into appearance, clearing cache, relogging, trying different clients, changing clothes, skins, shapes, graphics settings.... Nothing seems to work.

Siena, It looks likely that you have an NVIDIA graphics card with version 177 or 178 drivers.

There are known avatar rendering issues for these driver versions:

  • VWR-7957 (Clothing skinning error on nVidia)
  • VWR-9358 (Texture rendering problem Nvidia 178.13 release drivers)
  • VWR-8261 (With some clothes, viewer renders buttocks and legs totally white)

The following workaround has been reported:

  • Enable the Advanced Menu (Ctrl-Alt-D)
  • Disable rendering of Palletized Textures (Ctrl-Alt-F7)
  • Rebake (Ctrl-Alt-R)

You can also revert to Nvidia 175.19 drivers to see if this resolves your issue.

Please look at VWR-7957, VWR-9358 and VWR-8261 and add your comments/vote to whichever you feel most closely matches your issue.

This issue was originally opened 27-04-07 and was last reported to Affect Version 1.18.

If you have this issue, and do not have a graphics driver from the Nvidia 177/178 series or you do not have a Nvidia graphics card, please see this article in Knowledge Base

If you still have an issue please download the latest RC http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php Test Viewers > Release Candidate Viewers and

(1) Search the Issue Tracker to make sure it isn't a duplicate of an existing issue.

(2) Open a new issue and complete the "Affects Version/s" to the correct one.

(3) Add any other relevant details that would help LL developers fix it. Full details from Help > About Second Life and a screenshot are very important.

Thank you

I have Windows XP, and SL use to work on my computer for a long time, until about 6 months ago, now everything turns black after a few mins, and i updated my driver, and what i dont understand is how does it work before, and now it doesnt? It makes no sense, no matter what i do, updating my graphix drivers, and all that, it doesnt do anything. It still all turns black after a couple mins, and my text disapears. I dont understand, if it was my video card, it wouldn't work at all right? so why does it not work now after only a few minutes of seeing everything perfectly before it goes black? and by that i mean the walls go black, the floor, the land is always visable, but the text and prims go black after a few mins. Can anyone please help me solve this?
