Linden Lab Internal Branch: Branch_1-20-Viewer

 Description  « Hide
The problem is most noticeable in midnight setting. Parcel lines can be clearly seen through objects and through ground. See attached pic. The pink band going across the parcels along the edge of the sim is actually the boundary line at the edge of the sim, way under the water. Notice also the boundary line showing through the roof of the building.

Confirming this occuring with newest WindLight client as well - as well as occuring on the Intel platform. I find it quite noticable even at the noon setting, in truth.

Mercia Mcmahon - 06/Feb/08 05:09 AM
Property lines also show through avatar.

Fortyniner Beck - 07/Feb/08 05:42 AM
Only happened since the last RC - was fine under windlight before that.

Argent Stonecutter - 09/Feb/08 06:43 PM
Confirmed, latest Windlight only. Also, ban lines aren't shown at all!

Mercia Mcmahon - 15/Feb/08 01:00 PM
Added much smaller pic

Nedrae Messmer - 15/Feb/08 08:58 PM
Still present in the newest WindLight RC (80044).

Also attached a screenshot showing property lines overlaying an avatar.

Seems to be that fixing VWR-3172 was done by making property lines (specifically) rendered after everything else, instead of changing the shaders in the Windlight water so they didn't mess up the rendering of special alpha layers.

Hopefully they will fix this by fixing the water shaders, and maybe even go back to Runitai's earlier shaders and so fix VWR-5143 as well. :)

Maegen Parvenu - 08/Mar/08 08:13 AM
As of new release candidate viewer, this bug still exists. I see property lines right through my body and all the prims around me.

Torley Linden - 10/Mar/08 10:44 AM
This issue was resolved as "Needs More Info" during our batch cleanup because it was set as affecting First Look: WindLight. On the Issue Tracker, we've noticed many duplicate issues and issues that lacked actionable info or were already fixed.

WindLight recently "graduated" from a "First Look" technology preview to Release Candidate status -- nearing inclusion in the main viewer with your help! So, "First Look: WindLight" does *not* exist anymore.

More info and how to download the RC viewer: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/03/06/new-release-candidate-viewer-1191-rc0-available/

If you've verified that this issue is still a problem in the newest Release Candidate, here's what to do next:

     (1) Search the Issue Tracker to *make sure* it isn't a duplicate of an existing issue we know about. If it is, link it as a duplicate using the "Link this issue..." link on the left. You can learn more about searching by watching this video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAlXK5hSVMc

     (2) Reopen the issue and BE SURE to update the "Affects Version/s" to the correct one, most likely ONLY "1.19.1 Release Candidate". However, if this bug affects the main viewer (1.19.0 as of this writing), then DO NOT set it to an RC version. Only set it to 1.19.0 instead. Be as specific with versions as possible -- there's generally no need to set multiple versions, as it tends to dilute and confuse where a bug originated.

     (3) Add any other relevant details that would help us fix it. We can't stress the importance of a "solid repro" enough -- a reliable series of steps to make a bug happen reliably.

     (4) Come and attend our inworld bug triages, where you can meet with Linden Lab employees to look at, verify, and expedite bugs for fixing. More info @ http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Bug_triage

Thank-you for helping us improve Second Life! :)

Re-opened as a Release Candidate issue (does not affect standard viewer). See Property Lines 19.1RC.jpg for photographic evidence.

Squirrel Wood - 10/Mar/08 01:28 PM
^the thin lines are not much of a problem but what you can see here can turn into a big annoyance especially when the shaded areas are even bigger than the ones you see here.

Mostly seen at sim borders when the adjacent sim is not shown due to draw distance settings.

Argent Stonecutter - 29/Mar/08 12:53 PM
This was apparently created as a fix to VWR-3172. The rest of the problems caused by VWR-3172 are STILL problems, and it would be better for the fix to VWR-3172 to be reverted and this entry to be closed than to leave that fix in and just come up with a new hack for property lines.

Chaos Mohr - 05/Apr/08 05:27 AM
Confirmed that this is still apparent in the official release version 1.19.4

Attached is an example of what Squirrel pointed out taken in 40+-terrform Tan mainland region.

Repro Steps:

Logon to SL
Go to View Menu > Property LInes and select it
Notice property lines are showing, and view an area that is hilly - notice that other property lines show through the land itself

Argent Stonecutter - 09/Apr/08 07:55 PM
1.20 will still have this.

* Fixed: glow is rendered on property lines and selection silhouettes

This is handled by having these (and HUD objects) rendered AFTER all in-world content, which inherently prevents this from being fixed.

Zee Kuu - 11/Apr/08 02:43 PM
This problem really came for me with this last 1.19.4 update.... it takes away the functionality of the property lines and reduces the enjoyability of SL... please fix this immmediately.

Second Life 1.20.0 (84432) Apr 9 2008 03:59:09 (Second Life Release Candidate)

This issue is still STILL happening for me, and now no matter what I do, when I log in the "view property lines" is enabled making me have to turn it off every time I crash or log back in. Its really annoying :( The lines are visible through buildings, avatars, trees, ground and they seem to go down on the Z axis forever. There doesn't seem to be any "steps" to make this happen other than turning "view property lines on".

I've tried turning them off and relogging, I've tried clearing my cache relogging. The lines are always ON at log in for me.

In the latest RC we have the worst of both worlds... property lines show through objects, AND property lines are hidden by Windlight water! Oh, sure, they are sort of visible, but you have to hide water in Advanced->Rendering->Types to really see them reliably.

PLEASE undo the change to make property lines show through the Windlight water, and approach the problem that led to this multi-stage rendering from a different perspective. This is not solving the problem, and it's creating a new one.

Argent Stonecutter - 08/May/08 10:16 AM
In RC6 property lines have been somewhat fixed, but they now show in front of (not through) partially-alpha objects like non-linden plants and walls with alpha windows.

Ramzi Linden - 08/May/08 02:24 PM
This should be fixed in the 1.20 Release (currently in RC6 status at the time of this comment.)

Argent- thanks for the pointer about partial-alpha objects. Apparently this is a known design-flaw in the strategy of our fix. Sadly, it would take a more complicated "pretzeling" of the render pipeline to address the alpha object condition. Can I request that you open a new bug to track that case, since the stated summary of this issue is essentially addressed?

I'm very happy to have property lines tamed again too.

Argent Stonecutter - 08/May/08 05:24 PM - edited
I don't understand. The original problem was caused by an incomplete fix to allow property lines to show through Windlight water. That fix did not address any other special rendering layers (such as wireframe) being blocked by Windlight water. RC6 reverts virtually everything created by that original flawed fix for VWR-3172.

Since VWR-3172 is no longer fixed, why not simplify the render pipeline and revert to the original behavior?

See VWR-7131

I'm running viewer 1.20.12 on an Intel quad core with nVidia 8800 GT and I've had a friend duplicate this bug. I normally run with property lines turned on but when I enter build mode, the property lines become visible through my walls, avatar, you name it. As I said, I had a friend duplicate this bug employing the same method - turn on property lines while in a building. Bring up build mode and they become visible through everything.

teddy qinan - 12/Jul/08 08:29 AM
Clearly showing property lines.
Lines only showed in screenshot when "Show interface in snapshot" was selected. "Show HUD objects in snapshot" did not show the property lines.

JetZep Zabelin - 02/Aug/08 04:35 AM
Now we can't see property lines through objects, this makes it very difficult to see the property lines when you need to. :(

If you dont want to see property lines, turn them off.

This isn't really a bug, its a personal preference. I'm going to start a new issue requesting property lines visible through objects and an option to make them extend all the way up into space so us designers working up in the air can see where we are.

JetZep Zabelin - 02/Aug/08 04:53 AM
See VWR-8463 "Property Line visibility needs more options". This is for designers who need to see them through objects and extended up into space, for ease of space planning.

* Designers need to see property lines through objects sometimes.
* Designers need to see property lines extended high up into the air when working on builds up there.

Make property lines have at least these 2 options that are easily to toggle on/off quickly.

This is important for many reasons, for example if you aren't aware of exactly where a property line is when you're 500m up in the air you wont know that your tenant space has a property line through part of it that prevents tenants from properly using their space (i.e. adjoining parcel has build permissions restricted, etc.)

JetZep Zabelin - 02/Aug/08 04:57 AM
Changed to low. If property lines bother your visual experience, turn them off!

Argent Stonecutter - 03/Aug/08 09:34 AM
Changing the priority of a resolved issue seems weird, but I would like to reiterate for JetZep's edification the point made over and over again here... that it is not practical to turn property lines off. Even setting aside all the other potential issues, it's critically important to see sim boundaries given the continuing sim crossing problems.
