 Description  « Hide
There is a problem with the friends list in that it at times the entire list will load, but all names will display as (Waiting).

There is one known cause for SOME of the people seeing this problem:
See VWR-1998 for a repro.

Other people have been seeing this problem with no cache clearing at all, and continue to experience friends lists stuck on (Waiting) even after each login.

One workaround for 1.19.0.5:

  • Remove a friend from your list then re-add them.

This seems to work regardless of the cause of the cause of the borked friends list.

Other workarounds for the problem:

  • Relog without clearing your cache. If you're experiencing the bug in VWR-1998, this will help you. If not, sorry.
  • Use calling cards instead of your friends list.
  • Use the friends list online.
  • Use the OnRez viewer.

I am having this same problem since downloading the new release candidate v1.19.0. When I click on "waiting" and open an IM window it will show me then who it is. Not a very easy way to find out who is online.

Jopy Weber added a comment - 07/Feb/08 06:22 AM
It happens to me on 1.19.0 RC since I cleared the cache.

bailey longcloth added a comment - 07/Feb/08 06:29 AM
I'm having the same issue on 1.19.0RC windlight. Once I cleared the cache, my friends is list is either waiting or hippos.

Damona Rau added a comment - 10/Feb/08 04:21 AM
I have the same problem after a viewer crash.
Now the friendslist is stuck, in all viewers (regular, RC and Windlight, all the latest versions).
I've tried also a complete reinstall with deleting all files, but it's still the same

Damona Rau added a comment - 10/Feb/08 06:16 AM - edited
I've found a solution, that means, it worked for me, not sure if this will fix this problem by others.

I've pleased a friend to remove me from the friendslist and add me again. After this procedure, this friend was the only one on my friendslist, all others (waiting) or (hippos). After a relog my whole friendslist was back. When your friendslist is back, wait some minutes and do a relog again, to save this state. in your cache.

Maybe this will help others too

I am still having the same problem. I've had all my friends showing as "Waiting" since Sunday, Feb. 9th. No names show up at all!!!

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 13/Feb/08 07:16 PM
I'm adding a repro for the cache clearing bug and some workarounds here. I'm still not certain if clearing the cache is the cause of what people are seeing, related, or a whole other bug entirely. It might help a few people who are seeing that form of the bug though.

Karl5 Hogarth added a comment - 15/Feb/08 07:39 PM
I was fine yesterday and all I did was add one new friend. Before it would only be one contact in (waiting) status, now it is the entire list. Before if I changed the check mark to let them see my online status or not and that would clear up the problem. That trick no longer works.

I was fine until I added a new friend and was forced to load a new version of the viewer.

Inventory/Calling cards section seems to correctly show who is online, so the info is there, just not appearing in the friends list box.

One hack to get effect of the friends list:

Open Inventory, Choose File>New Window, enter (online) in the search box. This will filter to friends online.

This also has the added function of if you make subfolders for your calling cards, you will see the
online friends grouped by folder. So for example if you have a business, you can group them into
folders for real friends, staff, and customers.

WindLight First Look 1.19.0

My contact list hasn't worked since I downloaded this version.
Damned irritating to have to click on each and every "waiting" to see who is online.

Thank you, Daniel. Perhaps you should work for Linden instead of their "techies"

Having this same issue in the latest updated version on Windlight. I was fine until I had to update the regular viewer to the latest version. I don't know if that is related but it's the only thing "SL-related" that changed on my side. I sure would like to see this fixed the most. I can live with everything else if I have to.

IntLibber Brautigan added a comment - 23/Feb/08 09:09 AM
I logged in today on the windlight client to get this same problem. Cleared cache and relogged in Plum, that did not fix it. I am running XP, P4 2.8 ghz processor, 2GRAM, GeForce7600 GS vid card w 512 M VRAM, cable modem with 600+ kbps speed. This problem did not exist prior to today other than typically one "(hippos)" at the top of the friends list. Now its as seen in the image I've uploaded "borked-friends-list.bmp"

IntLibber Brautigan added a comment - 23/Feb/08 09:12 AM

Kayla Stonecutter added a comment - 27/Feb/08 02:44 AM
I use the -purge command line option to clear cache automatically and it started with the first 1.19 viewer. Relogging without clearing cache and my friends list shows properly. The friends list shows the correct number of entries, the checkboxes for rights are correct, and clicking the Profile button with one selected opens the correct profile. This happens both on my main machine running WinXP, and my laptop with Vista. However it does NOT happen on either machine when I log on with my alts that only have about a dozen friends. My main account has many more friends (almost 100) so it seems to happen only if you have a lot of names in the list.

Roy Blanchard added a comment - 27/Feb/08 03:16 AM
I haven't ever gotten a friends list on any of the rc 1.19 viewers. When it gets stuck on the 1.18, it usually loads when someone comes on or off, but this NEVER EVER loads.

Persian Chevalier added a comment - 29/Feb/08 05:16 AM
I downloaded the "required" 1.19.0(4) version yesterday afternoon, and discovered this friend's list bug. I have read this issue report and tried all the suggested fixes; nothing worked. I had the occasional problem with the friend's list not loading with the previous versions, but the "fixes" generally worked. This is an ongoing, non-fixable problem with the current version.

Day Oh added a comment - 29/Feb/08 12:03 PM
Mine doesn't load if I clear cache before logging in.

AnnaLatexa Beaumont added a comment - 29/Feb/08 04:19 PM
yeah, me too, today I installed the new 1.19.05 viewer and I noticed this problem. if I compare it with 1.18xx viewers, they started to load the list after a friend was leaving or coming in, but now, nothing changed, so please try to fix this problem soon, thank you

Hey Torley, it's time to get this fixed. You acknowledged seeing the problem, so what has the investigation yielded? Is there a known cause?

I know it can't be too serious technologically, because even when all of my friends are (waiting), if I click Profile on someone, it comes up. So the viewer knows who my friends are, and it knows which ones are online, because they're bolded. It's just not showing the names.

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 01/Mar/08 05:27 AM
This is what I love about SL: our friends lists don''t work right, our group chats haven't worked for months, and now both problems are more intractable now than as far back as I can remember, yet SL is STILL marketed as a social tool in the press.

That's just.... marketing genius.

I'm having this problem too. Someone said clear the catch and relog well I've had to clear my cache just to log in for the last 6 months. So that little trick doesn't work for me.

also if I look in my inventory in the calling cards section I see lit up cards of whose online so it works in there

friends are (waiting), if I click Profile on someone, it comes up. So the viewer knows who my friends are, and it knows which ones are online, because they're bolded. It's just not showing the names.
somebody fix this please.

broken today 2nd March, I 'm 1.19.0 (5) and made the mistake of clearing my cache before I signed it.
is it the new viewer which is broken or SL ?

  • use the OnRez viewer. It doesn't have this problem.

Have this problem with FL too.... no names.... just "waiting", .... and I do wait.... and wait.... and nothing changes . It has been like this since I downloaded the new version.
Real annoying problem.

Lyselle Munro added a comment - 02/Mar/08 08:09 PM
Same problem here but, amazingly, my friend's list didn't start acting up until 1.19.0 (5)...was still working fine as of when I'd loaded the 1.19.0 (4) that was then pulled. So, guess we get to keep using the calling cards until it gets fixed...at least I now have a use for them taking up space in my inventory

And yes, I agree, a rather annoying bug...

If someone were to ask me, I'd hedge toward the issue being related to clearing cache; only because I do that all the time. Has me wondering if that's a trigger somehow. Reason I comment on this is because I have a friend whom I was getting to help me try the little tricks suggested which I'd not tried yet. Her list was working fine but as soon as she cleared cache before relogging, poof...down to waiting...

Hope y'all can fix this soon...never realized how accustomed I was to that little list until I had to work around it

Lys

Sofia Westwick added a comment - 03/Mar/08 09:40 PM
In the 1.19.0 (5) viewer my friends list will not load I have try everything I have cleared cache have tried different region's tried completely uninstalling the SL software and reinstalling. I made sure my calling cards were loaded everything I try fails.

I've had this same problem in Windlight and Dazzle as well. The friends list shows all of the different people where the names should be either says "hippos" or "waiting" and will not load.

As I was saying In 1.18.5 (3) Also often more times then not my friends list would say Hippos or waiting but I could put a check on one of the friends list options like let someone see me on the map and it would force load the friends list. but this will not work in 1.19.0 (5)

I have try every thing I could think of in 1.19.0 (5) to get the friends list to load and it won't

I cleared cache set bandwidth to the max uninstalled SL and reinstalled it.

Tryed my alt account, nothing worked. I had to revert back to 1.18.5 (3) where I can force load my friends list.

I really want to use 1.19.0 (5), but I can't go with out seeing who's online as I do allot of business stuff in SL. and that is really going to hurt if I can't see my contacts online.

This is the Solution I got in my ticket and this does not work. "Thanks for your inquiry. Please try to clear cache->relog->pick a name on the friendslist and toggle "show online" status off. Then turn it "on" again. After that please wait a minute and relog again.
That should hopefully remove the problem"

This solution provided doesn't work for me in The 19.0 viewers. It only works for me in the 18.5 viewer.

I tried that and all its saying is the same as it has been shows all of the people but says "waiting" or "Hippos" where the name should be.

I'm stuck using the 18.5 viewer until there is a solution for this that will work.

This an Majory Issue that needs addressed badly.

Hi Everybody. I've found a work-around, for me anyway... I clear cache as usual and the friend's list doesn't load. But... if I sign out and log back in without clearing cache, my friend's list will load properly. Basically, every time I log and clear cache, which we all have to do to be able to do anything in SL, I have to log in and then immediately log out and back in again to get the friend's list to work.

Hope this works for all of you too!

For me, this is major issue (can't see friends, can't interact, makes online time less than successful). Please fix. The workaround posted by above comment, see below repeat of it, did work for me in the latest viewer, 1.19.0.

1.19.0- latest version- Friend's list is broken - always shows friends as "Waiting". Have NEVER gotten it to work.
1.18.5(3) - released November 29, 2007- also had an issue with not displaying friends - work around was to click on and off, "can find me on the world map " check box. This would finally populate the friends list. Windlight is also plagued by similar friends list issue . I have reverted back to using the 1.18.5 version, because of friends list issue.

The Comm window menu is broken. I wonder why is it taking so long to fix such an obvious issue? I would hate to think this has been handed over to some " new" Linden as a project? The whole IM Tab philosophy is broken as well. An IM waiting, no longer causes the tab to flash,, only highlights it after a single flash. I am sure that people who juggle multiple IMs, find this a loss of functionality. Also,, and another biggie, if your Comm window is not open wide enough, you can have many waiting new IMs outside the scope of the window, and never know about it. There is no visible que, of a waiting IM.
Please fix, asap please, please? TY

I know I'm probably just repeating everything already mentioned, but like everyone else, I'm extremely frustrated.

I need my friends list to work. The inventory calling cards is an ok work around, but very clunky. And I can't afford to do the "do not clear cache" work around because then my inventory does not fully load.

Also, the group IM chat failing is becoming a hassle as well.

That's it. Thank you.

I have the same problem with friends all showing as online / offline - but all of them are (waiting). This started when i started to use 1.19

It is such a critical problem that I reverted back to 1.18 which did not have the problem.

However, from 12 March, we HAVE to use 1.19 - this really is a disaster, people's friends are the most important thing in SL!

Pixie Heinkel added a comment - 07/Mar/08 06:07 AM
Not to belabor the point, but the friends issue is CRITICAL and needs immediate attention:
1) the "friends online" function is not working on the website
2) the friends list does not load properly inworld
3) the function to select/deselect friends who can "see" you inworld does not work

All together these bugs add up to not only an inconvenience, but they are security and privacy issues.

PLEASE GIVE THIS TOP PRIORITY FOR FIXING!!

mart faulkes added a comment - 07/Mar/08 12:06 PM
I don't care about all the fancy stuff that is in the new 1.19 version, I don't understand it all anyway. I just want to meet my friends, chat to them and have fun with them. I dont want to read web pages while wandering around, voice chat worked fine before, it was all ok.

Now with 1.19 - I CAN NOT SEE MY FRIENDS! Not unless they are all named (waiting) - and they are NOT

I downloaded 1.19.0 and gave up after a few days and went back to 1.18 which is perfectly fine for me, and I can see my friends names and status with 1.18.

However, I've read that 1.19 is mandatory from next week, 12 march!!!! How unbelieveable to force us to use a totally flawed product. At least logging in will be fast - no one is gonna bother using SL if the single most important thing, their friends, can't be seen!

For God's sake sort it out as a matter of urgency and don't force 1.19 down our throats untill it IS sorted.

Travis Bjornson added a comment - 07/Mar/08 07:42 PM - edited
I am changing this to Showstopper because I fully believe it deserves to be classified as such. LL, if you are having trouble reproducing this, please post. It's been happening to me intermittently since at least 1.18.x.

Hey for all of you who are having problems with the friends list not loading in the 19.0 viewer I had the exact same troubles. I've found that the Second Life 1.19.1 (0) Mar 5 2008 17:51:19 (Second Life Release Candidate) has the friends list issues fixed it loads every time.

so if your having problems and still in the 19.0 viewer download the Second Life 1.19.1 (0) Mar 5 2008 17:51:19 (Second Life Release Candidate) and your problems should be fixed!

I have this happen to me since 1.19.0 and also happens on 1.19.1 RC0. It seems to cycle differently each log in with the cycling being a few logins. It will at first be all the friends listed, then next log in several say (waiting) but not all. Then it gets worse each time I log in till all of them say waiting. Then the next time I log in again all are normal again and the same cycle keeps repeating each time I log in.

Hello Torley, I hope so moreover the "friends online" page didn't work correct, because with every reload (even within seconds!!) it shows a complete different result and I don't have to repeat that meeting friends are the one and only real reason to go in-world.

Friendly Greetings to you, dear

Every time i log in I have waiting or hippos. Doesn't matter if I've cleared cache or not. Doesn't matter what I've done at all, I still have hippos or waiting.

If I add a friend, that one friend is not waiting, it's whatever their name is. Everyone else is still waiting. This makes flist unusable and this is a major problem with an flist as long as mine is. I've also been told that many of my friends can't tell I'm online either and I assume it has something to do with this same issue.

Kindly fix this.
