Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-10362

 Description  « Hide
Original summary: Client Pauses when a friend status changes (such as appearing online or offline, permissions given, etc)

When a friend appears online or offline the client temporary freezes and then resumes. Also affected is when a person status is changed, for instance being able to see if someone is online or not.

Turning off notices for friends updates does not alleviate the problem.

I have also noticed this and turned off my notifications of friends coming online, which has made a huge difference. I still get some freezes which I think are related to my local network traffic. The blue pop-ups on the bottom right of screen were always accompanied by screen freezing.

A couple of updates back I started having problems with lag and friends notifications, however, I was able to fix this by un-checking "Show Online Friend Notification" or by simply relogging. Today (Weds, Feb 6th) I downloaded the new 1.19.0 Windlight client and again, I started lagging real bad whenever friends came online or went offline, I tried doing the usual and unchecked the "Show Online Friend Notification" box under my general tab, but it won't work. No matter what I do, I still lag every time a friend comes online or goes offline.

I tested the viewer with the "Show Online Friend Notification" box checked, and walked in circles till a friend came online, and the minute a notification popped up I froze and lagged.

I have cleared me cache, uninstalled and reinstalled secondlife, upgraded my drivers, restarted my pc, relogged- but the problem still persists. This is a critical issue, at least to me it is, I simply can't stay logged on if I lag every few minutes.

I tried disabling notifcations now im just crashing and randomly lagging. This is one horrible bug.

harper beresford added a comment - 07/Feb/08 03:25 PM
This has plagued me in other versions, but with this latest Windlight it makes it almost impossible to use the client. I have exactly the same phenomena, and turning off friends notification does nothing to help me. I would think it has something to do with updating the communications list. A friend tried turning his eyeball on and off and it froze with each change.

I end up running into walls, flinging prims all over, and generally being miserable.

I think this far more important than "major." This renders Windlight virtually unusable for me. The regular client has a whole set of problems for me as well, so I am very stuck at the moment.

I tested this on a Second System and found that it's a similar issue with an ATI based graphic card:

Precisely the same thing happens on the Intel iMac with an ATI card. It took me a while to understand that it was this (already reported) issue and not something else, since I have disabled online/offline friend notifications ages ago.

I really wish i knew how to fix this. I use secondlife as my job and when I can't work I can't make money so this is a huge loss. I've tried several trouble shooting routs. Using first look was helping me avoid it ,but now we have the same crappy code as the canidate so were having problems.

When you have 2gb of ram and a decent pc this is the last thing I'd expect. My new pc im building is a quad core ,but if these problems persist then theres no point....

when the small window popup of friend ON or OFF appears, occurs small stopped or frozen in the image, per approximately one or two seconds.

This sounds irritating! I haven't reproed this yet myself, but I REALLY DO APPRECIATE the multiple independent reports. So thanks Nexeus and everyone, I'm importing this for our devs to look at – I wonder if it's the same as VWR-2966.

How long have you noticed this problem?

Nexeus Fatale added a comment - 11/Feb/08 09:56 AM
YAY Torley to the rescue!

This issue is more comprehensive as VWR-2966 (http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2966). At first when I observed the issue I thought it was just when someone logs in and logs out, but in further testing I realized it concerned with anything that changed the status of friends.

I noticed this issue initially when Windlight included the fixes of the 1.19 Release Client. I initially thought it was a graphic card problem, and tested it both on a ATI and Nvidia cards (with recent drivers), but the issue persisted on both systems. I also thought this was just a Windlight problem, but it seems the problem resides with the changed made since the 1.19 Release Client.

Walden Mannonen added a comment - 11/Feb/08 10:59 AM
Experiencing this in WindLight as well as the Release Candidate.

Torley, I've had this problem since the latest Windlight and the latest RC release. The current "stable" release of the viewer is not an option for me because I can't log on with it - the online notifications prevent anything from happening.

I'm in the middle of an fscking 4 sim build. I've tried to port stuff to my other avatar to try carry on work, but I simply have too many resources on my main for this to work.

My details of this bug are posted in comments here (along with the support ticket number): http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-4855

Thanks for jumping in on this Torley.

jeska linden added a comment - 12/Feb/08 03:37 PM
Timeless - you can also turn off the "Show Online Friend Notifications" in the Preferences, which should help.

Timeless Prototype added a comment - 12/Feb/08 03:44 PM
Hi Jeska, that was the very first thing I tried. It make absolutely no difference.

Nexeus Fatale added a comment - 12/Feb/08 04:04 PM
I forgot to mention when you turn off friends updates through the client, it does not fix the problem. This was something I tested when I first reported the issue, and forgot to add it (oops!)

Nexeus Fatale added a comment - 12/Feb/08 10:16 PM
Okay, so I did some more testing in the recent Windlight viewer, yes the problem still exists but I think it may be tied to the amount of friends that a person has on their friend list. I went in, and attempted to replicate this problem on an alt with about 10 friends. The problem did not appear, yet on my friend list there are close to 100 (I have not checked exactly how much) friends.

So the question I have is can anyone else confirm that the problem may exist with long friends lists (estimate friends list over 50? 100? 200? or under 10? 20? 30? 40?)

Jopsy Pendragon added a comment - 12/Feb/08 10:43 PM
Confirmed this is still a problem in today's (79674) windlight release.

I suppose I should probably prune some of the 540+ people out of my friends list, but I freeze up so often it's hard to even manage that. =)

Thanks for the most recent reports – I hope we can find out what's going on soon, sounds so frustrating.

To confirm: I've seen a few reports of this affecting people in the main viewer (1.18.6) and being an older problem (VWR-2966), but are any of you who see it in 1.19 also seeing it in the main viewer?

Nexeus Fatale added a comment - 13/Feb/08 10:34 AM
@Torley - no I am not seeing this problem appear in the current main viewer.

Timeless Prototype added a comment - 13/Feb/08 10:53 AM - edited
@Torley, for me, the main viewer has a slightly different issue: when logging on the status updates are synchronous and nothing else happens until online statuses for friends cards are all updated and then what happens next is a lottery between the following: faceplant and stuck; ruthed till relog; red map; objects not rezzing (sounds like packets not being ACKed in time or something). When I asked a Linden what to do, I was asked to use RC and/or Windlight as the solution to this problem. At the time it did get around this issue. But the recent updates to RC and Windlight broke what was my only hope with this bug. I am now seeing hippos in Windlight. Screenshots of the hippos are here: http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-4855

Am currently downloading the latest Windlight to test. Will edit here with results.

[Edit] Update: same symptoms with current Windlight viewer.

New Windlight (79674), presents the same symptoms of the previous version, freeze..freeze...freeze....... friends changes estatus ON/OFF.
AND ""Turning off notices for friends updates does not alleviate the problem.""

Jopsy Pendragon added a comment - 13/Feb/08 01:25 PM
Torley-

The only time I recall seeing anything even remotely similar to this in the main viewer was a year or more ago. A 'sky update' event that seemed to cause regular interface hiccups.

I did not see this friend-notiication issue was on either win-xp or macosx-tiger prior to 1.19.0.

Gwyneth Llewelyn added a comment - 13/Feb/08 05:34 PM
Tested today on the MacBook (Intel GMA 950); the issue seems not to be present on the 1.19.0 RC1.

On an iMac + ATI Radeon X1600, the issue is still present as reported, on WindLight 1.19.0.79674

Good news, Second Life 1.19.0 (2) Feb 12 2008 10:31:26 (Second Life Release Candidate) seems to have the issue fixed!

Yahp friends. new version of the client (Second Life Release Candidate 1.19.0 (2)) the issue ** Client Pauses when friend status changes* * does not persists, its fixed.. But in my client (WindLight First Look Viewer: 1.19.0.79674) preferred and steady this issue persists = /

Iam using in both systems XP and Vista

Nexeus Fatale added a comment - 13/Feb/08 09:57 PM
Yep, the recent release candidate has fixed this problem, still exists in windlight.

Torley Linden added a comment - 14/Feb/08 07:35 AM
Thanks for the updates – WindLight is based on the RC and slightly lagging behind, so if this is fixed in RC, then a future WL version should no longer have this issue either.

Nexeus Fatale added a comment - 15/Feb/08 07:24 PM
I would love to get confirmation, but it seems to be fixed in the recent windlight viewer as well!

djcabello klaar added a comment - 15/Feb/08 08:04 PM
