 Description  « Hide
While building a fountain, i encountered a render error, i can't explain.
Maybe an issue of my graphics card, but maybe it's not, so i post it here.

I created 3 hollow cubes, no tranparency at all, and applied a marble texture.
As you can see in my attached image, (only) the topmost cube is somewhat transparent, which it shouldn't be.
This effect depends on the point of view: When i look from an upside down angle, it renders correctly.
But when i walk around, it renders incorrectly all the time.

All i did was to create a cube, add texture and repositioning / rotate it. Somewhat strange...
Never encountered it anywhere else yet, at least i didn't notice. :)

Regards,
Speon Beerbaum

I started a new fountain, and again that problem. (see screenshot renderbug_error2.jpg)
Just 2 Prims: 1 Cylinder, 1 Tube.
The cylinder on the screenshot is a little bit higher on the z-axis than the outer tube.
In the upper part of the image, the tube is overlaying the cylinder, which it shouldn't do.
Maybe it's an z-index issue with my "high-end" gfx-card or something like that?

Argh, sorry for another comment....

Just found out, f i pick a different texture, it renders correctly...
The asset-id of the texture i wanted to use: 6dad3303-b42c-8e59-2a0f-83a6dcb11a7e
Maybe that helps, somehow.

The problem is that the texture in question has a little bit of transparency in it. You're running into the good old-fashioned transparency overlay bug.

Ah okay. I didn't realize that. Never encountered that error before and was wondering. :)
I should have heard to mommy when she said: "Only trust your own textures!!1". :D

Going to close this issue then, if i can, as it is obsolete.

Thanks for that hint & regards,
Speon

I'm very sorry, but i have to reopen this issue, since the bug is still there and it's one that really has to be solved in my opinion. The hint with the partial texture was good, but it doesn't work anymore. I guess one of the last patches broke that too and it didn't solve the origin of the problem, it was just a workaround.

At this point you can use any object, with any texture (or none at all), make both objects semi-transparent, let the objects intersect, and move the cam around. You'll see the z fighting in places, where there is absolutely no question about, which object has to be in front. If both object are at the exact same position, ok, then you can't do anything about it. But if the object faces in question are 1m+ away from each other, it should be clear which one has to be in front.

I recently encountered this issue with clouds too:
I put an object at about 145m height, still some meters away from the clouds.
When i'm below the object (somewhat 10m), look up and move the cam around, sometimes the clouds are in front, sometimes they are correctly behind my object.
( i try to attach a screenshot of it too )

That's putting me into real trouble, as there are no real workarounds for this issue, giving me a hard time to fulfill my customers wishes. I can't drop the transparency and i can't decrease the size of my object. The only option i have with the sky is decreasing the height of my island, which gives me new problems with borders and water. :(
And after all these options would be workarounds too, where i prefer the problem to be solved.

regards,

Speon Beerbaum

another z-index issue

Transparency overlay bug first entered in VWR-27. Linking and closing. Commenting in VWR-27 that there are good screenshots here.
