Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-45351

 Description  « Hide
A simple problem with a simple solution;
We've all done, you're working away and want to align two objects, or move one a little-ways, but you put a number in the wrong field, or make a small typo. Suddenly your prim is on the other side of the simulator, under the ground and you have no idea how to find it.

Bugger.

The fix? A checkbox in the edit window (on the tab with position/rotation etc. options) entitled "Restrict moves to 10m" (alternatively the 10 could be a text-field or drop-down list where you can choose a value yourself).
With this switched on, if you mis-type a number, the worst that can happen is that your object will only move 10m in the new direction. Or even refuse to move, because according to your new setting the value you entered is invalid; I prefer the latter (refuse to move if over 10m move) as 10m, or whatever value you chose, could still be enough to lose something.

This wouldn't stop us moving builds higher up, as you just select the build, uncheck the box and move away, then switch it back on again. I think it would make sense to have this option on by default, and maybe even have an advanced option which has it default back to checked whenever you move something (in-case you uncheck it to move something a large distance, then forget to check it again).

This way 99.9% of builder's mistakes can be neatly avoided :)

Something along these lines definitely needs to be done. I suggested something similar awhile back in the forums. My idea was to put the threshold at something like 30m, and hook this into the "are you sure?" dialog system that already exists in the client. If you attempt to move an object more than 30m all in one go by entering values in the edit window, you'd get a dialog asking, "You've requested to move this object 200m away. Are you sure? [ ] don't ask me again" If you say yes, the move happens, which is good on the rare occasion when you actually want to do this (it happens).

This wouldn't take much extra code, because the confirmation dialog box system already exists in the viewer. Even better, the "don't ask me again" options are viewable in the last tab of the preferences window.

This is a simple solution for a very common building headache. I hope someone picks this up. :3

Not really a problem for me, but it gets my vote. Lex's comment presents an amazingly sane solution. :-)

I simpler solution would probably be to just have the object remain selected and add the ability to use Ctrl + Z to undo the move like you can when you move it by hand.

Oh, how I detest accidentally flinging objects away. In addition to entering unintended numbers, it also happens if I'm dragging something towards the edge of the screen and then it keeps scrolling, and suddenly perspective shifts and I find my object is wayyyy in the distance. (I know this would be more clear with a video.)

Adding some better controls to keep stock of what you're working with would be very practical (in a Heloise sort of way, heh)!

I just thought I'd add, at least as far as dragging objects goes, you can change the max drag distance (something like MaxDragDistance in Debug Options) in the viewer.

Torley Linden - 14/Jun/07 12:04 PM
@Day: Never knew that before, thanks for the tip. I'll have to try that soon.

We've discussed this internally, and a better overall solution would likely be a more predictable and useful Undo, so you wouldn't have to worry so much about making goof-ups.

In the meantime, as Day Oh points out, if you really want a similar feature to limit your object dragging distance, you can try that debug setting.
