Second life cannot work on Toshiba notebook - Vista home premium with ATI Mobility Radeon X1400. Error message: Need to download latest driver. I try to install ATI catalsyt 7.12 version. But it wont work.
Besides, I tried to update graphic card. But it is up-to-date.
I cant even login into the Second life main screen. It always crash after showing the 'detecting hardware' message.

I have a similar problem... just a slightly later crash and I never got the message about needing to update my graphics driver. Running on a Dell Inspiron E1505 with Vista and ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 graphic card with both v. 1-19-1-4 and 1-20-0-84432. SL ran fine for about 5 days (on the 1-19... viewer). Then one morning, when I would try to launch the app, it would get as far as where I could see my login name at the bottom of the screen, and then almost immediately crash. The crash logger would also say that it couldn't find a server to send to (or some similar message). I have downloaded the latest driver from Dell, tried clearing my cache, uninstalling the program, removing all files, rebooting, and doing a reinstall (we even upgraded our memory to 2 GB) and I still get the same error.

ETA: I just found on the forum a post suggesting that checking to see if the color resolution is set to16-bit or 32-bit and if it's at 16-bit, try it at 32-bit. I did, and I am happy to report that I am back into SL!!!!

This issue was reported as affecting Viewer 1.18

If it is still an issue for you using Viewer 1.21.6 http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php please reopen, update the "Affects Version/s" to the correct one and add any other relevant details that would help LL developers fix it. Up-to-date, full details from Help > About Second Life are very important.

I also have a problem with my BRAND NEW Toshiba Satellite L350 170.

I'm sitting here with a nice big 17" screen, dual core 2GHz processor with 4GB memory, a Radeon 1200 graphics card with Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset accelerator using up to 1341MB of memory, I'm running Vista Home Premium with SP1 ... and Second Life tells me it isn't high enough quality. And sure enough, when I open SL, it runs slowly and clunkily.

Any recommendations warmly received as otherwise I've just bought a very expensive brick!
