Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-8990

 Description  « Hide
Repro (backup your Preferences first):
  • Login and go to Preferences > Popups tab.
  • Click "Skip all 'Skip next time' Dialogs". (If your prefs haven't been customized noticeably, you may want to also change some Preferences to confirm.)
  • Relog.
  • Observe: Preferences are reset to default, and settings_releasecandidate.xml or settings_windlight.xml (depending on which viewer you tried this in) are corrupted.
= Expected: Preferences should not be corrupted. (See below for more details, great Resident help!)

====-===

Original summary: skipping popup ' warn about lack of payment info' corrupts the settings_windlight.xml and will reset it to the default.

Took me a while to figure this one out:
Opening the corrupted file shows in the internet explorer the next error:

The XML page cannot be displayed
Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Missing equals sign between attribute and attribute value. Error processing resource 'file:///D:/Documents and Settings/...
<WarnCannot enter parcel: no payment info on file value="FALSE"/>
-------------------^

1 workaround: don't skip it... , works fine as long you do have payment info

Even in debug Settings it is misspelled?

I've upped this to "major". It's very easy to cause this to happen; install Windlight, run it, go into prefs, click "Skip all 'skip next time' dialogs...", and your prefs get trashed and reset.

I imagine it's pretty common for experienced SL users to want to click that option, so this is likely to be driving a lot of people nuts.

It's insanely annoying!

aHA! so checking that one box in prefs may be why I only ran the WL viewer for long sessions since for a bit of chatter it wasn't worth resetting presets again?

Confirming I also get the problem, thanks very much this was driving me insane.

Removing that line from the file using notepad fixes the loss on next start.

Thanks for your reports!

@astryd: Sounds like you have a good repro... at first blush, this sounds like previous complaints I heard of WL preferences not saving

I'll check this out further.

EXCELLENT detective work! Beer, Astryd, Moira, and stevenSDF – thanks to each of you for helping this. I DEFINITELY reproed it twice. It's not specific to WindLight and also affects the Release Candidate. I'll bring it to the attention of the right Lindens!

Thanks for the help!

No need to edit anything.
1) Open Preferences
2) set EVERYTHING up the way you want it (this includes skipping all popups)
3) go back and allow the popup "warn about payment info"
4) press ok
5) good to go everything is saved and will stay saved.

Hey all I thought I'd test this bug out again as it's been a while since anything has been said on the issue.

It appears to work in the latest version of windlight so if people don't mind I'm resolving it, could others help check that it works for them too, then the issue can be closed.

i'm getting this bug on the newest viewer, 1.19.1 (4), yet again
every time i start it up, resets all my graphics to the bare minimum. even my old 64meg video card could render better than THAT

stevenSDF Fisher added a comment - 06/Apr/08 05:59 AM
I'm unable to get this to repro again. Still appears fixed for me.

Are you sure that this is caused by "skip all dialogs?" If it's just your gfx settings it may be a different bug.

Frank Skosh added a comment - 06/Apr/08 11:30 PM
i don't think it's "skip all dialogs" causing it, SL may just be getting into fights with "barely supported" video cards (i have a PNY GeForce FX 5200)
regardless, it's one of the worst bugs i've ever encountered, it needs to be fixed

If it's not to do with "skip all dialogs" this is the wrong issue to reopen. You'll have to continue your search, if if you really can't find any, open a new one.
