I know this has been posted before and was called an "intended" feature... but please have a look, this behavior can't be intended, it looks so ugly it breaks the whole windlight atmosphere.

Alpha texture become either opaque or 100% transparent with very ugly and not anti aliased from only a few meters away. You have to zoom very close to get them look right ...

It might bring a bit performance, but please please please make this an optional feature for those playing on old pcs... if you have decent hardware you don't need those little tricks that force your world into ugliness without asking
I would love to disable this as I really like the look of the windlight client ...

The tintable windows on my beach house are atrocious.... until you get close, then they turn normal. :-/

I agree this is an important issue about a faulty optimization attempt, but please vote and comment on the existing issue VWR-3101 rather than creating duplicates, which just divides the votes and makes it harder for Torley and co. to keep track of people's opinions.
