 Description  « Hide
After upgrading to the latest ATI drivers (7.12) I noticed that some letters in the menu bar are rendered ugly. See the attached screenshots, and look at the capital letters E, V, W and H. It is just a minor thing, but it happens in all screen/window resolutions. Other text (the menu items itself or other text in the viewer) seems to be fine.

I also noticed the same thing with the Linux viewer, both with the Linux 7.11 and 7.12 driver.

Hello there,

I have the same problem after updating to ATI Catalyst 7.12 on Windows XP
I have an ATI Radeon 9800XT, used to be perfectly capable of handling sl.
Since the update, text on the menu bar is good except for the "C" of the client menu.
Also the "near me" chat is good but IM's are terrible. some lines are ok, then other lines are messed up.
It's always the same line so when scrolling the messed up line stays on the same spot messing up the line beneath or above.
Also in user profile picks there is a messed up line. (see attachment).
Inventory has the same problem, when i click on the inventory folder the line seems to be ok.
Selecting another folder makes the selected folder text look good, and the folder just unselected changes back to messed up text.

    • Editted it to major, cause i can't read it it's to weird/small, whatever it is...
And copy-pasting chat and profiles to read the messed up lines is not what i want to keep doing.. **

Azziej Enzo added a comment - 13/Jan/08 04:10 PM
Notice the 3rd line in this profile pick.
it looks like this on some lines in profiles, in IM's & inventory folders/items.

I'm having the same "problem" with the menu bar (only) since driver update on windlight, release candidate and "normal" viewer (and other problems on the side).

This issue is still here with the latest Windlight (1.19) and ATI catalyst 8.1 drivers.

Rolling back to 7.11 drivers fixes this issue.

Issue still here with the latest WindLight Viewer (79674) and ATI Catalyst 8.2 drivers.

Rolling back to 7.11 drivers fixes this issue.

See you all 'till next month, when 8.3 comes out!

8.2 does it.. I wonder if its an aspect ratio issue.. I vaguely remember in earlier versions having chopped up text similar to this and had to manually play with the settings to adjust the font sizes for the aspect ratio i use 1080x1024 cuz its not 4:3 or 16:9

Workaround (though its rather improper to have to do this, go to the General tab, disable use resolution independant scale and slide the UI slider to 1.075 (you may have to futz and apply to get this right but it has to be slightly over 1 and it will fix the type issue)

Workaround and results of workaround

Second Lifes default behavior using ATI 8.1 Catalyst and default setting.
(UGLY)

See Screenshot 1 and Screenshot 2 for before and after the workaround ...

Note: it may screw up other text.. you will have to play with the number slider to get everything close to right..

I have seen this in the release candidate too. Menu fonts show as ugly_menu_fonts2.png

i use ATI radeon X1300 and i had the issue with catalyst drivers since 7.5 and it is still going on with the lastest. SL viewer.

same issue most the font character are distorded whatever resolution is used

i would like to add a critical drop of the frame rate as to me it goes down to 0.5FPS and stay there till i teleport and then it drop again to 0.5 and keep steady till I teleport again and so on

I'm using a Radeon X1900 and have been experiencing this issue for a while now - I have found, though, that enabling 'Adaptive Anti-Aliasing' within the ATI Catalyst Control Center results in a noticeable improvement in the affected fonts (of course enabling this setting may cause a performance hit). Both the 'Performance' and 'Quality' versions of Adaptive Anti-Aliasing seem to give similar results.

Edit: It seems that although Adaptive Anti-Aliasing does indeed improve the 'broken' fonts, it also causes font-distortion in other areas (for example, the 'News from the Official Second Life Blog' section of the login screen) and perhaps a mild blurring of text generally.

Hey Jolt.

You may be on to something there.

I too have an LCD monitor with 1280x1024 (5:4).

I end up with a lot of dialog boxes open so prefer text tiny and had the UI Size at 0.75.
Bumping it up to 0.775 has improved it no end. Still not perfect but far better than it used to be.

I'm wondering if all the other people having these issues are also on 5:4 displays.

My laptop is 16:9 and the text is perfect. Just a pity the graphics card on it can't cope with any Windlight sparklys.

Here in the third screen shot, you can see all first letters of folders in my inventory are affected. I've also been affected by having a hard time making out what some notices say. I had used an older driver till now, but since the latest SL release, I have had stability issues and updated my driver again.

Ellla McMahon added a comment - 17/Sep/08 07:36 PM
ATI released the Catalyst 8.9 today, please test to see if the updated drivers resolves your issue.

Thank you

SuezanneC Baskerville added a comment - 28/Sep/08 07:05 AM
I just installed Catalyst 8.9 yesterday.

The distorted text in the File Edit View menu is still there..

Now I recall why I was still using Catalyst 7.11.

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 28/Sep/08 11:43 AM
Nice to know it's not just me. I just started using an ATI card and yup, same problem with 8.9 drivers and 1.21.4.

Panacea Pangaea added a comment - 06/Oct/08 11:56 AM
ATI Radeon X300
Windows XP

I haven't had any font problems in the regular client (up to 1.20.16), but I am getting distorted fonts in RC 1.21.4 for menu bar, chat, IM, Inventory, etc. - looks a lot like screenshots 3 & 6 above.

I was already on driver 8.8, but installed 8.9 anyway - it made no difference.

Puck Pacer added a comment - 20/Oct/08 07:48 PM - edited
I thought I'd at least comment before putting it off because I just don't want to deal with it right now.

As of 1.21, which I read there was an adjustment to the spacing of the chat lines, "Increase the spacing slightly between Chat Console lines" which I'm guessing is the chat that fades away? Because, before 1.21 the best setting I could find with the least problems reading what's important, for me was 8.75 UI font size.

Now, since 1.21, EVERY OTHER CHAT LINE is garbaged. I tried to find an alternative UI font size, but it's either the inventory, or still the chat, or chat history, or scripts or a combination of these.

I've gone back to 1.20. In which the biggest problem I can remember noting (with 8.75 ui font size) is every first letter of the things in the "my inventory" directory are garbage (all sub directory's are fine) and the first letter of many drop downs and buttons are a bit messed up, but readable.

It's become a bother that I can't have all the new fixes and decent readability.

Also, I have just installed driver 8.10. Problem still there.

Later edit:
I changed the chat size from small to medium, and that has fixed every other line problem to let me continue using 8.75 ui font size with 1.21 viewer

Anyone tried Catalyst 8.11 yet?

By the way, the problem seems to not be affecting me using Catalyst 6.11.

That's no typo, Catalyst Six point one one.

Dael Ra added a comment - 15/Nov/08 03:19 AM
Yep, still the the same old problem with Catalyst 8.11.

Phli Foxchase added a comment - 20/Nov/08 06:05 AM
I know this is not a regressive bug but I added it in 1.22 PN because it's an ugly bug.

Also the same on my 2008 iMac with Mac OS X 10.5.5 & 10.5.6, using both 1.21 & RC 1.22x

Any hope of this years old problem ever being solved?

Current prerelease with an ATI Radeon HD 3450 with Catalyst 9 series
This bug still is around... only not as severe as in the past
Note the E V H and A caps on the toolbar

For the record, my X300 ran SL with no problems (and had above average settings, basic/atmospheric shaders on, menu looks fine) with 8.33 driver and no Catalyst. Now that I upgraded to 8.573 and Catalyst 9.1, the menu is it uglified (as in http://jira.secondlife.com/secure/attachment/13851/ugly_menu_fonts.png ) and it lags so horribly that even with near-minimum settings (NO shaders, among other things) even something as simple as an avatar change (and no, not an overly fancy avatar mkind you!) lags it to ~2 FPS for the next few minutes.

Same issue with new HD4870 card and Catalyst 9.2. Windows XP SP3, fresh install. Fonts are not properly rendered in 1.22.11.0 official viewer, Cool Viewer.

The same happens in version 1.18.5.3, 1.19.0.5, 1.20.17.0 and 1.21.6.0. All render just fine with nVidia graphics (8600GT).

Upgrading to latest Catalyst 9.3 changes OpenGL to 2.1.8543 but doesn't help to solve this issue. Still bad font rendering and very low FPS.

Ellla McMahon added a comment - 09/Apr/09 01:43 PM
ATI have released Catalyst 9.4 (4/8/2009). Please test the new drivers and add a comment.

Thank you : )

shirlee iuga added a comment - 11/Apr/09 08:30 AM
Catalyst 9.4 officially only supports Radeon 2400 Series and newer and DX10 Cards.

DX 9-Cards are no longer supported by ATI.

See: http://www2.ati.com/relnotes/Catalyst_94_release_notes.pdf

If you are a lucky owner of a card that is older than about 1.5 to 2 years (e.g. if you own a X1950 Card), you have to use that 9.3 driver. And stay with bad font rendering and very low FPS.

OpenGL Desaster (memory not supported) + corrupted drivers + Linux driver desaster (regarding TV-Out) + dropping support for cards older than 2 years ---> no more ATI... I think I'll be fine with Nvidia next time...

Dael Ra added a comment - 11/Apr/09 05:47 PM
Got one of those ATI x1950 xtx cards. Had it for just over 2 years and now find out ATI are no longer supporting it. Shocking if you ask me.

Still, whilst it's been a great little card for most things (it's been fine in Crysis for example) SL seems to hate it. I get the feeling that Linden Labs develop primarily for Nvidia and then worry about ATI cards later.

IF SL were my only reason to have a decent card than I'd probably buy Nvidia but I've had better luck with ATI on a number of other games so for me it's 'better the devil you know' for the minute.

I wouldn't jump ship without doing some research first though Shirlee. Nivdia haven't been too quick on updating their DX9 drivers for a while now so they're also a little prone to leaving loyal customers in the dust just as much as ATI.

Pebble Garden added a comment - 19/Sep/09 02:56 PM
I have an intel core 2 Quad with 4GB of ram and a very middling ATI HD 2400 XT card, Vista64, and everything was fine in SL until 1.23, when I got that 'corrupted bottom edge of the font' problem.

I found I was using 8.8 Catalyst drivers, so I updated to 9.9 and the problem went away. Hope that helps someone!

Puck Pacer added a comment - 10/Oct/09 10:32 AM
I logged into SL for the first in months on THIS computer. I took the opportunity to update SL to 1.23.4 and found the problem seems to be fixed! I THEN went ahead and updated my drivers too, to 9.8.
