 Description  « Hide
In client (viewer) version 1.14.x, the "default state" for the "mature" checkbox in search was changed from TRUE, to FALSE. The various political, commercial, and social reasons for this aside, the Mature setting is a search filter.

Previously, the searches were unfilteredby default, allowing a user to chose to filter out mature content on a "per search" basis. This was reasonable at the time, as the people wishing "to always filter out mature content" were a relatively silent component of the population. By being "unfiltered by default", all advertisers had a reasonable expectation of having their ads seen by the searching public.

Currently however, the default setting is now "filtered by default" and a vast number of "paid for" Classified ads, and Places listings are hidden "by default". In and of itself, this is not a major affront. As the searcher only needs to "agree to view mature content" in their search.

But the setting does not persist between sessions. Forcing the searcher to re-enable the setting EVERY time they relog. This setting should not be volitile. By resetting it every time, the client is appearing to make a decision FOR THE USER... and given that the descision it is making, relates to the suitability of certain content.. The client is making a social/moral decision for the user. Once mature content has been "agreed to" there is no reason that choice should be questioned.

Please alter this function, so that the setting can be retained between sessions.

Winter! Thanks for letting me know about this.

Previous behavior: some checkboxes defaulted to Mature, some didn't. We made it consistent – all default as NOT Mature. Expected behavior is if you check Mature for a given search tab, it should persist across sessions.

I wasn't able to repro this: I checked them all and relogged, and they're still all checked for me in 1.14.0 (1).

Does anyone have a solid repro?

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 06/Apr/07 04:42 AM
The meaning of the checkbox in that search dialog need to be changed from "mature regions" to "mature content".

Why is there a "mature content" checkbox in the parcel flags at all if it's not used?

Haravikk Mistral added a comment - 06/Apr/07 06:25 AM
Agree with Argent, there are plenty of Mature regions which have parcels that are perfectly clean and do not promote or condone mature content. Obviously the nature of avatars in the area may change, but on the whole there is no reason to restrict searches because of this.
Perhaps making a prominent (highlighted) note if the parcel/classified/whatever is in a mature simulator so you know this is an acceptable compromise.

^ I certainly find it confusing that the "Mature content" checkbox is broken and that the Search > All tab says "Include Mature content", while Search > Places tab says "Include Mature regions" We've a related internal issue on this:

SL-40097 - "Mature content" checkbox is broken – fix it or remove it

Zaphod Kotobide added a comment - 11/Apr/07 06:56 AM
My understanding of the Mature Content checkbox in the parcel info is that it relates to the future implementation of "Publish listing on web". I do think it makes much more sense to change that behavior, so that residents with established PG businesses in mature regions can have their parcel listings show up in "mature" filtered searches. Yeah, the "region" may be marked as mature, but does that necessarily mean everything within it is "mature"? We already have an Abuse Reporting mechanism in place that can be used when folks misuse the checkmark.

Then - in Search Places, change the filter to "Include Mature Content" instead of "Places in Mature Regions". The current behavior there assumes that all content is "Mature" by virtue of being in a Mature region. I understand the concept behind this, but the reality out there is something completely different.

^ That's similar to what I described internally. Some changes are being made to this which we'll hopefully see soon, but for what's actually described at the root of this issue – does anyone have a solid repro?

I can't reproduce this on either the (0) or (1) build of 1.14.0, in Windows. Is Winter possibly on a Mac?

Winter Ventura added a comment - 19/Apr/07 07:01 PM
I am not on a mac. Nor was my friend who also noticed the issue.

AT some point, the setting FINALLY seems to have begun to persist. However.. there was a period of 4 days after "upgrading" to 1.14, that the setting was NOT persisting.

One could suggest that it was related to the fact that SL does not exit gracefully.... EVER. and routinely crashes out, or has to have it's processes terminated from the Task Manager. it's quite possible that in those 4 days, that SL had not once ever quit correctly, and therefore kept "losing" the setting.

Torley, I saw your comment about SL-40097 above, but couldn't find it in this system or the old one. I'd really love to vote on that. I think it isn't cool for explicit results to show up in the search system when I set it to filter out mature content. Imagine if my kid would be present when that happened?

Aimee Congrejo added a comment - 11/Jun/07 01:21 PM
Wilan, SL-40097 is their internal bug tracker which we lowly residents don't have access to. o.O

Dunno about others, but this issue seems fixed. It does stick between sessions here.

Torley Linden added a comment - 14/Aug/07 10:40 AM
This came up at our UI bug triage today. While I'm not sure who fixed it, several more of us noticed the "Show Mature" setting now persists as appropriate.
