Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-11569

 Description  « Hide
SL opens fine and runs okay for a short while, but then my window goes black and a message pops up on my tool bar with the notice that driver nvlddmkm has stopped working and has been recovered. After that SL crashes. All the other programs I use do not have this problem and I suspect it is related to the Aero feature of Vista.

I run SL on my laptop as well which also has Vista but is the basic version and does not have Aero on it. I tried to change the theme of my desktop system to basic but it still gets the error so I suspect that the compatibility issue is related to the fact that Aero is on the computer period.

Also occasionally I get the blue screen but that is not as often, but then again I use my laptop more then I would like to since the desktop was built specifically for using SL and other support applications in my design work.

Tried it on Windlight and instead of the dirver error, SL just suddenly closed and sent a crash report.

Nevermind, I ran Windlight again and this time it gave me the nvlddmkm driver error like it does for the other versions.

Removed Affects Version/s of "First Look: WindLight" – as it says when you're editing an issue, "ONLY select a "First Look" if this issue ONLY affects that version." We do this to better focus on FL-specific issues. Thanks!

Azildin, do you play any 3D games? Reason I ask is because I've seen this error elsewhere and it's not SL-specific. For example:

You may want to search the NVIDIA forums and google for further info. Please have a look at those; I'm not sure what the solution may be but it sounds related to your problem. Thanks for your report.

I also suffer from this issue. I looked at the nvidia forum link you provided and did not find a result with them. I run at best for 1 hour and 45 minutes before receiving the error mentioned. Have tried the drivers that came with graphics card (96.85), from the people I bought the card from (162.95) and from NVIDIA (163.75). Here is a list of my system components:

Talon, Have you tried reverting your drivers back one version? Also, I'm curious: are you in the US or out of the US? Drivers get localized for regions and it may be that if you're out of the US, the most recent nvidia drivers for Vista might be behind. You might want to try US drivers. Please let me know how it goes.

Video: NVIDIA 8800gts
Display: hp w2408h 1920 x1200

Version of SL: 1econd Life 1.20.2 (85278) (happened with the previous version too

CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2392 MHz)
Memory: 3326 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista (Build 6000)

Hope you can help

The main issue for "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." is VWR-6733

Please check to see if it is still an issue for you in the latest RC 1.20.10 and add your comments and vote to VWR-6733

Thank you

I get this problem on an Asus G1Sn laptop, vista 64bit, nvidia 9500m GS graphics. Other games do not crash. This is a gaming laptop made for games.

It seems to be due to large prims, when i go to an area where a large prim is in my draw distance when i move camera or rotate this error occurs.

This was occurring on the 1.20RC so i stopped using them, now it occurs on the 1.20 main release. I would like to go back to 1.19 but can't find it so for now i'm using the onrez viewer but wow it is really old and the graphics are substantially worse.

Please help.... there must be some major change between 1.19 and 1.20 causing this maybe there is way to have option to turn it off. i've tried current settings and no luck.

Can't play SL due to this bug.

Viewer freezes exactly like described in original post.

My gut feel is that is is large prim related, i crash in areas that appear to have large prims visible

no problem whatsoever though with 1.18.x and 1.19x , this driver issue is something specific to v1.20x

Having problem on a Gateway laptop. Problem began when I upgraded to 1.20.15(92456). After the display driver error and recovery I get an error message that says
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library
Runtime error
Program c:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe
abnormal termination

Running an nVidia 8500
Vista 32 bit SP1
3070 MB RAM
Gateway P6831-FX

I am watching VWR-6733 for updates on this (it is the same issue) - but I got crashes no less than usual using SL clients 1.19.x and 1.18.x - which actually worked fine up until Windows had an automatic update - then they caused crashes and so does every other combination of drivers, clients, etc...

If I find ANYTHING that helps me out I will update it on VWR-6733.

My girlfriend - same thing - Version 1.20.15, NVidia 8500, running that Vista trainwreck of an operating system. Going back to 1.19.1.4 solved the problem.

davie scribe added a comment - 15/Oct/08 05:46 AM
this problem only happens with pc or laptop that run vista and nvidia together.if you use xp ,this issue is not apparent

I was having the same problem. Apparently the issue is all about vista, and affects lots of 3D games. Turning off Aero seems to work at present, but I would suggest this is a bandaid solution, not a real one, and I doubt it would work for everybody, but hopefully this advice helps someone like it seems to have helped me!

Here's where I found the "solution"
http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=25381

and here's instructions on how to do it:
