 Description  « Hide
Upon installing the new graphic card as described below, I crashed within 1 second of logging into SL. That's never happened before. I attempted to log in again and immediately crashed. I looked up the graphic card on your website and found it to be one of the recommended ones, so I attempted to log in again. This time I think I might have stayed in for 10 seconds. Then I crashed. This happened four more times. So I researched further and found this group of tickets issued regarding these particular graphic cards. I followed all the suggestions to no avail.

So after buying a shiny new graphics card for my birthday, I figured that SecondLife would run twice as smooth, load twice as fast, and look ten times as pretty. Obviously not. Now I can't even start it up.

aric linden added a comment - 19/Dec/07 05:06 PM
I'd suggest that you update to the latest version of the native drivers. If you're living outside the US, you need to make sure that you explicitly get the newest version of the drivers for your region/country.

Please let me know if that helps.

Alyx Stoklitsky added a comment - 26/Dec/07 10:07 AM
Even with the current latest catalyst drivers (7.12) this issue remains. Second Life does not start up atall when running under this card.

khamien mills added a comment - 28/Dec/07 05:43 AM
Same for me now, since I installed ATI's latest 7.12 and a hd2900xt. "Worked" with 7.11 (http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2421)
Now viewers crashes as soon as it finishes the precaching.

I have same symptoms (crash before login screen) with both EAH2400 pro (Asus) and a HD3870 (Peak) under Windows Vista 32 bit, with Catalyst 7.12. This is affecting all curent versions of the viewer.

aric linden added a comment - 23/Jan/08 01:27 PM
Are you still seeing this problem? We think it's been resolved. If you can let me know if you're still having this issue, that'd be great. Thanks

Alyx Stoklitsky added a comment - 24/Jan/08 09:16 AM
Issue still persists. Unable to even reach login screen under this card.

Scott730 Criss added a comment - 29/Jan/08 06:41 AM
I am having the same issue after having just installed a new ATI Radeon 2400 HD Pro card into my system. I have been searching other forums for issues and there may be a driver update or athe the least a patch according to what I've found. Will write back to let u know if it works for me. I know the card will work as I tweeked with the 3D settings and was able to at least load to where my avitar was visible before crashing. System info below.

Windows XP Home SP2
P4 2.26 Ghz
1GB DDR2 Ram
ATI Radeon 2400 HD Pro
Bellsouth extreme 6.0

I should mention I upgraded to this card from a NVidia Geforce Ti 4200 with which the game never loaded(loaded to VFS, then crashed)... So now I'm wondering if I needed the new graphics card.

aric linden added a comment - 05/Feb/08 02:33 PM
Please try using the Windlight First Look build and see if that helps. Please let me know.

thanks

Still unable to reach login screen on any client.

aric linden added a comment - 08/Feb/08 10:29 AM
Hi, can you tell me more about your environment? How are you accessing the internet? Is there wireless involved? We're you previously able to run SL?

Alyx Stoklitsky added a comment - 10/Feb/08 12:43 AM
Previously able to run SL using onboard graphics chipset. Ran fine, if slowly and with few features (shaders etc).

Installed Sapphire ATI Radeon HD2600 Pro card and relevant drivers, after which SL immediately ceased to function.

If you are running a ATI Graphics card... try disabling "Catalyst AI" in the 3D options in Catalyst Control Center Advanced mode. It Helped me with my ATI HD2600 XT.... Now I only crash every 30 minuts or so.. )

@ aric Linden

MORE DETAILS ON THIS SUBJECT:

I too have been having major problems with sudden crashing out of SL. The program shuts down like someone turns of a light switch and the crash logger comes up immediately after. You should have a lot of crash logs from me as of late.

I believe I have narrowed it down to the new ATI Video Drivers as this started happening after upgrading the Drivers to Catalyst V7.12. After installing them, down grading to V7.11 doesn't help. I have updated them each time a new driver comes out in hopes that a fix would show up but to date, nothing. When I last upgraded to V8.2, I began crashing 10 seconds after log in and couldn't get back into SL for more than that... 10 seconds ... Crash... time after time. I downgraded to 8.1 as at least with that version I used to be able to stay in for a while without crashing but again, down grading didn't help.

I then started messing with the settings in Catalyst and found a possible work around which may help you locate the problem. If I disable "Catalyst AI" in the Catalyst Control Center, 3D settings, I can get back into SL for a while before crashing again. At least it is usable again.

Another thing I noticed is that crashing is more frequent when I experience lag. It will still crash at anytime without notice but if I start to lag while doing something like riding a bike ... it almost always crashes within seconds of feeling the lag.

I hope this helps you locate the issue as I have talked to several others experiencing the exact same problems....

Thanks for your continued support... You guys do a great job!!

HD

Kindly see ticket No. 4051-4453781. Twice this ticket has had its status changed to "Solution Proviced," and twice I have reopened it. As I see it, we have two issues here: the technical problem, which remains unresolved, and the gaming of the ticket tracking system. (After thirty-odd years – some of them odder than others – as a developer, I guess I know that trick when I see it.)

I've got a high-end, technically current laptop that won't run any version whatsoever of SL. That's the injury; I'll thank your tech support team not to add insult (to my intelligence). Close the ticket however many times; absent a genuine solution, I will keep reopening it.

HD 2600 ran well for me aside form a avatar glow/transparency bug with anti-aliasing turned on that I've notified the ATI OpenGL developers about.

I couldn't repro crashes on ATI driver versions 7.12 or 8.3 with Catalyst AI turned on and off on the new Release Candidate Viewer (1.19.1) that should become publicly available shortly.

Please try the new Viewer when it comes out (it's the first WindLight Release Candidate)

Any info on settings you may have changed or other interesting info would be GREATLY appreciated.

Alyx Stoklitsky added a comment - 07/Mar/08 09:58 AM
Interesting.

Using the Release Candidate View 1.19.1.0, Second life loads and the login screen is now displayed - at which point it than crashes before any account and password info can be entered.

Mercia Mcmahon added a comment - 08/Mar/08 12:57 AM
I run a Sapphire HD 2400 XT (PRO) on Vista and it runs beautifully, and did so from the start, so maybe this is related to XP.

Zen Linden added a comment - 10/Mar/08 09:12 AM
@Mercia: I ran this on XP.

@Alyx: I see a crash for you, but the crash report says it was on an 8800 GTS. Was this a different machine? Could you submit a report for the ATI card?

Also, have you tried the 8.3 drivers? Also, have you played with any of the settings? Is Catalyst AI turned on/off? Anti-Aliasing? Any setting or tool you may have played with? Is this on dual monitors? Anything else running in the background?

ATI has also recently run it as well as they were able to reproduce a bug I told them about when anti-aliasing was turned on, so there probably may be some setting that is causing this or a borked driver install.

Alyx Stoklitsky added a comment - 10/Mar/08 09:16 PM
@Zen Linden: Please see the crash reports for Stephie Dawes, as it's her machine I've been trying to get working. Any diagnosis of what might be causing the crash would be greatly appreciated.

Zen Linden added a comment - 13/Mar/08 08:33 AM
@Stephie, @Alyx

I'd love it if you ran the latest Release Candidate on a 2600 and submitted a new crash report if the problem still exists.

Thanks!

Alyx Stoklitsky added a comment - 14/Mar/08 05:50 PM
@Zen:

Just ran the latest release candidate on Stephie's machine with the 2600. Displayed login screen and then instantly crashed before any information could be entered

Crash report has been sent.

I am having the same issue. I have an Athlon XP 3000+ with a 512 MB Visiontek Radeon HD2600 Pro and 1.5 gigs of PC3200 ram and am using Windows XP with RC SP3. SL will run fine if I have it sitting in the task bar doing no video rendering, but if I bring i can only use it for a little bit before it cleanly crashes and sends a log. I was using the 8.452.0.0 drivers. I just found the 8.453.0.0 drivers on Visionteks website, im going to try those out and see if they help. I tried playing with the Catalyst AI and it did nothing to help. Ancient drivers I have on my laptop which is a Gateway MX7520 which uses a Radeon X600 it had no problems so I am stumped as to why this card is throwing errors with SL.

Aceoyame Halasy added a comment - 15/Mar/08 07:03 PM
I tried out the new drivers, and they've been rock solid. For all those having problems I would use the version I stated in my above comment because I havn't had a single crash since I switched. If that does not fix it then it may be something related to the AGP or PCI-E drivers your Northbridge chip on your motherboard uses.. I would try upgrading your chipset drivers if it doesnt help

@Alyx, does a clean install (uninstall of RC, install of new RC) of 1.19.1.2 help with anything? This does not appear to be because of the 2600 as I noticed in our viewer stats for Release Candidate we have a number of them being used and it ran fine for me.

Alyx Stoklitsky added a comment - 25/Mar/08 10:55 AM
@Zen Linden
RC 1.19.1.2 didn't help atall, but I have solved the problem - which was so infuriatingly simple that I'm about ready to go into a conniption fit even though everything is now fine.

...Windows was set to 16bit colour rather than 32. Changing it fixed the problem instantly.

Facepalm.

Zen Linden added a comment - 09/Apr/08 04:06 PM
Thank you SO MUCH!

On nvidia cards, SL is able to put up a warning that says to go to 32 bit color. But on ATI, evidently we don't get that far on and it crashes.

Thank you for finding this very ugly crasher!!!!

Fixed in 1.20.2

Alice McConnell added a comment - 22/Apr/08 01:46 AM
I was using the RC viewer, and it was working fine and smoothly. After the previous update (now have 1.20.2), I suddenly started getting quite a few crashes, generally quickly after logging in or sometimes after a short while. My drivers seem up to date. I just tried it with the latest version and crashed twice.

I hear similar stories from others. My specs are:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2393 MHz)
Memory: 3070 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista (Build 6000)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce 8800 GT/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 2.1.2

Brenda Maculate added a comment - 24/Apr/08 07:19 AM
Whatever changed since 1.20RC1 really, REALLY needs to be fixed. RC2 and RC3 seem to work fine when it is run right after installing (be it overwriting existing files or a fresh install), but ANY attempt to run the RC viewer crashes right after the small, gray "Loading Second Life..." box.

1.20RC1 seemed to have worked fine for me, as do the 1.19.x viewers. If the current state of RC makes it to "release", someone should get fired (laid-off, sacked, canned, shown the door, etc)...

My system info:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1596 MHz)
Memory: 2046 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (Build 6001)
Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
Graphics Card: GeForce Go 7600/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 2.1.2
LLMozLib Version: [LLMediaImplLLMozLib] - 2.01.14656 (Mozilla GRE version 1.8.1.13_0000000000)

Speculative Proto added a comment - 24/Apr/08 07:30 PM
Experiencing the same behavior as listed in here with 1.2 RC3. Client crashes as the Logging in screen appears and the bar just finishes traverse from left to right. I had not problems with the earlier releases.

My system info:
CPU: Pentium(M) 2.00 GHz
Memory: 1.5 GB
OS Version: Windows XP Pro
Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Mobility
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility radeon 9600 Series
OpenGL Version: ?
Other?

Again this problem is new with the most recent version for me.

Tater Todd added a comment - 25/Apr/08 03:37 PM
Usually I don't have any viewer issues, even with the RC's from previous versions, but with RC4 I crashed right after logging in in-world. (I never tried the previous RC's for this version).

I've tried RC20 ver. 8-10 and they all crash on startup for me (the viewer opens with a black screen and as soon as I can see the login bar, it crashes and goes to the crash logger). I have an ATI Radeon card and the latest driver, so I think this is the correct jira. The thing is, I can use the main viewer just fine (sure, it crashes sometimes, but I can login and stay in for awhile most of the time). But the RC20's just don't work for me.

Since the RC20 ver. 10 blog post comments are closed, I think I'm supposed to comment here (I'm new to the jira process, hope this is ok). I'm sure LL is working on this problem, just wanted to add my 2 cents. Also, I urge LL to continue to allow use of the current version when RC20 becomes the main viewer. Otherwise, my SL may be tragically cut short

Thanks.

Alyx, the internalID equivalent of this bug has been resolved as "unable to reproduce". I notice your last comment is from 1.20 RC10. The RC cycle had 4 more iterations. Are you still seeing this crash?

If you are, can you attach the crash logs that are generated immediately after the application quits suddently.

Suzan Collins added a comment - 11/Sep/08 09:27 PM
Your website describes this graphic card as a recommended graphic card, however it's quite clear from the several reports in here and from my many many crashes tonight that this graphic card does not work with SL. This issue is not resolved and needs to be. This is a brand new, high end graphic card. I never crashed before with my lower end graphic card. And it worked great before. I'm re-installing the old one. I even already had my color quality on 32 bit as suggested by your team. I worked with the resolution, cleared my cache, everything you guys suggested. Nothing worked. This needs to be resolved now. I crashed as soon as I logged in-- within 1 second. Then I tried it again, and crashed, and crashed and crashed. I don't think I stayed in longer than 10 seconds at the most. If you guys can't figure out why Radeon graphic cards don't work with SL, then don't suggest them, causing thousands of people to purchase them, only to find out they don't work.

Ellla McMahon added a comment - 12/Sep/08 07:46 AM
Suzan, thank you for your feedback.

Please see the related issues VWR-9008 & VWR-8717

There is an issue with ATI Catalyst 8.8 which ATI have said they will be fixing in the Catalyst 8.9. VWR-8717 Zen Linden - 04/Sep/08 02:48 PM 8.9 will contain the fix according to ATI.

Until ATI have fixed the issue the recommendation is to use the Catalyst 8.7.

Please would you try the Catalyst 8.7 and comment back on this issue.

Thank you

I also Saw that the Radeon 2600 was a recommended card so I installed the Radeon HD 2600 XT AGP 5.12 MB and bought a 25" I-INC LDC 1080p Monitor, and a 550 watt powersupply, thinking this would greatly improve my SL experience. I cannot begin to tell you how disappointed I am. When I try to open SL I get the pop up of VFS then the screen goes black for a second and I am then returned to my desk top. Windows Task manager shows That SL loaded then a few seconds later it disappears from the processes window. I am using SL 1.22.11 (113941) Also, ATI catalyst 9.4 with the hotfix .I contacted AMD and this was their response "The error message you describe is from the Game. Please contact the Game Manufacturer for information regarding this error."
I was using a Nvidia GeForce TI 4100 with no problems at all (other than only 128mb of memory and reduced graphics).

I also Use a Laptop with a Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS /PCI/SSE2 wit Vista SP1 that runs very well except it tends to overheat and freeze the entire PC, however if I keep it cool it runs just fine.
