We could avoid losing notecard and textures to inventory issues if there was a simple option to backup these items to the user's hard drive. What is needed is a 'Inventory Backup' facility, which you check the inventory type items which will be backed up. Notecards and Textures consume a lot of inventory space which could often be cleared out if users could download and archive those items. The backup facility should save all the items to an identical folder structure structure that each item is in, within the inventory, to make it easy to find things, and save each item to the same name they have in the inventory. If there are identically named items, append a numeric to each subsequent name of the same item.

What about items that you don't have copy permissions on?

Aurelius Draken added a comment - 12/Dec/07 11:01 AM
Notecards and textures are readily copyable through a screenshot, but this does bring up the issue of what happens when the items are restored; would the original perms be restored correctly? I can see two ways to handle it; 1) Only back up items which the owner has full perms on, which is probably the best way to do it, or 2) save all of the inventory (perhaps use a folder/item selection box like most back-up programs do) and save everything to a single, time-stamped 'blob' file where all perm data can be retained and everything in the inventory can be archived. Option two would be great to have, but I'd still like to see a way to mass-save full perm notecards and textures to an individual file structure. For content-creators such as myself, that would be a tremendous help and time-saver, and in consideration of how much we spend on purchasing full perm texture sets which sometimes disappear from the asset server, leaving us without a recovery resource.

As far as I can see, option 1 is the only workable solution, because otherwise, this would allow the copying of no-copy items. I'd like to see a way to back up things I have full perms on (or, heck, I'd like to see content loss go away, either works ). I've lost a few scripts that are irreplaceable.

There is a little-known program out there that allows you to backup all notecards and scripts that you have full perms on. It's in the libsecondlife command-line "testclient", as a command called "textbackup". It's not exactly user-friendly, but it does what you want (minus textures): it puts all notecards and scripts in a heirarchy on your hard drive based on the folder names in your inventory.

I am sorry if that is assumed to be included here already but I would be also a good option to allow Landmarks to be exported and this way made accessible for other applications. Since managing landmarks could be don way more efficient with other external tools.
