This issue does include some problems with the UI during the login process such as not being able to see typed text in the feedback form or not being able to see the ToS (I'm calling those bugs). I've tried to exclude obvious graphics card driver problems that crash the viewer immediately after login, and I've tried to stick to open issues. If anyone has a resolved or closed item that they feel has something to contribute from the comments / logs, it should also probably be linked here.

Problem for me started with 1.18.6 RC0. The viewer displays the login screen then it crashes (even if I don't type my password or I don't do anything) and doesn't report crash as it can't find servers. An important detail could be that the viewer does not display version number correctly in the lower right corner. All is OK with 1.18.5 (3) viewer.

Jopy,
Do a search for 1.18.6 issues in the JIRA. If you can't find your bug already reported, make a new entry and link it to this meta-issue. Thanks.

I get crashing when I reach the login screen with the Windlight candidate. My video drivers are up to date and I have reported this problem in a separate jira viewer bug. (vwr-4099).

The more recent crashes at login are likely due to a problem with the logictech LCD keyboard driver and sl, fixed for 1.18.6 rc 4 and following.

Mysterious crashes from the new viewer auth login page (rc and windlight) are the other component. We have no fix for them because we haven't been able to reproduce them consistently. For this and other reasons we are returning to the old login screen and authentication. This will be seen in 1.19.0 and following.

The details of our decision to revert back to the old login follow. This was sent to the sldev mailing list by Tess:

========-
Yesterday afternoon several teams involved with Viewer Auth met to
discuss the rising number of critical login issues holding up progress
for the release of the 1.18.6 client. The final decision was to
postpone Viewer Auth by putting back the old login code.

The reasons at the forefront of this decision include:

  • Internal projects relying on viewer-auth have been delayed.
  • Problems with web servers serving the login page.
  • Unknown cause of crashes at startup.
  • LLMozlib's support of frames has caused numerous bugs.

What this means for you:

  • Second Life client will default to the old login
  • There is no urgent need to support the new login mechanism in your
    client.
  • Existing viewers built with the new login mechanism will continue to
function since the server component of the new mechanism will stay in
    place.

In Q1/2008, Studio Icehouse plans to begin work on Agent Domain Login
(https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Agent_Domain#How_login_works). When
we resume Viewer Auth, it will likely incorporate the interoperability
changes from the login protocol work being designed by the Architecture
Working Group. Those interested are welcome to participate.

I'll respond to specific JIRA tickets linked here.
