Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-50139

 Description  « Hide
The SL viewer allows user's language selection on its Preferences > General panel. There is only one selection for "Chinese" at this moment. However, the viewer needs selections for at least two Chinese. "Chinse (Simplefied)" and "Chinese (Traditional)". For a historical reason, there are two major orthography for written Chinese language. One uses simplefied forms of Hanzi and the other uses historical forms. The former is mainly used in main land China and Singapore. The latter is used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao. Chinese speaking communities on the rest of the world use both, depending on the ratio of the origins of the people.

You can use zh_CN for the former and zh_TW for the latter, if you need the standard-based language_territory notation. (This is not 100% correct, but is a widely accepted convention.)

The UI resource for Chinese come with the current version of SL viewer looks like that for Chinese (Simplefied), but I'm not sure it is consistent or simplefied Hanzi and traditional Hanzi are mixed up. (Except those stored in zh subdirectory but actually written in English or Japanese.)

Unless there are separate choices, the user community can't start translation.

Hello, all Traditional Chinese users!

I have done a complete translation of Second Life viewer UI into Traditional Chinese!

As of this moment I cannot find any issue posted here other than this one that discusses about Traditional Chinese UI, I believe that my work will become the first traditional Chinese version ever available.

My translation, which I would like to call the CHT version (standing for CHinese-Traditional), is designed to co-exist with the current ZH version so the SL viewer can cater the needs of all Chinese-language users. To make this possible, a new <combo_item> tag must be added to the panel_preferences_general.xml files of all existing language versions.

I have submitted my Contribution Agreement to Linden Lab. Once approved I will upload my CHT version here ready for all of you to try and give comments, and promote toward an official approval to include it in future mainstream releases of the SL viewer. Your comments, whether positive or negative, are always good for all!

SL: LandRover McMillan

The following text is the traditional Chinese version of my words above.
Chinese-language users, when you add comment, please do so firstly in English!

At this moment, JIRA doesn't allow Chinese characters. See WEB-67.

Also, not just "firstly", but all discussions should be in English, IMHO. Discussions done in Chinese is not very useful for non Chinese speakers.

We understand the need for 2 chinese language selections, however we're putting this on hold to prioritize other international tasks.
