 Description  « Hide
The little icons that appear on the menu bar to indicate disallowed functions are completely obscured by the no-entry slash-bar icon placed over them. It's obvious that something is disallowed, but not clear at a glance what that is. Some kind of improvement in this icons would be relatively quick and easy, I would think, and add to the ease of use, especially for new users (and dense older users such as myself).

Yes, yes, I know this isn't a problem on YOUR dual 24" LCD monitors, etc etc.

An example is shown, but this is just tossed out as a guideline to what I'm suggesting. Real graphic artists could no doubt do something much better and with very little time invested.

=========== update for RC 1.9.0 and WLFL 1.19.0.79185 =============

The new menu bar icons in 1.19.0 RC and 1.9.0.78185 WLFL are VERY close to being right on the money, and a huge improvement over the previous versions.

However, after talking to some other people about this, I have to agree that the "no-can-do" circle-slash needs to be a little more obvious in the new 1.19.0 icons. Either make the circle a tiny bit bigger or a brigher red, or try the solution I used in the sample posted here – infill the red circle-slash with white pixels. It makes that part of the icon stand out quite well without increasing the size, and without being too obnoxious.

You can see what each icon means by running your mouse over it, but I don't think that's good enough.

Lex – yeah, an icon whose meaning you have to puzzle over is an icon that's not doing its job, graphically speaking.

updated to reflect the new 1.19.0 RC icons

I'd prefer to have the old icons back, but, if not possible, better contrast on the 1.19 ones would be at least an improvement – I can barely make them out.

I think the new 1.19 icons are too similar looking. It's harder (for me) to tell, at a glance, what is what. I think they should each be colored differently.. more distinct, somehow.

I'd also prefer to have the old icons back.. They were each so different, it was easy to tell what was what. Now I see a different blueish and yellowish icon with a dark red no sign, and I have to take a closer look at it to see what it is, instead of seeing an orange box, or a white paper, etc. at a quick glance. Maybe it's just how I think and work with things.
Sometimes a uniform look is good, but it should be easier to tell the icons apart.

Speaking for myself, I didn't have a problem with the old symbology, just the fact that the no-way circle-slash almost completely obscured them. They weren't working "at a glance" for me. The new ones are kind of spare in terms of discrimination – I see what you mean there, Ashrilyn, Though the new no-push is cute

Well, I am getting more used to the current icons. Even if they're here to stay, I guess that's all right.
I do agree about the no-can-do circle-slash signs needing to be more obvious. Their dark red seems to blend in too much with the dark gray of the menu bar.

Re: Coyote
Yes, I do notice a certain style used in the no-push icon.

"yeah, an icon whose meaning you have to puzzle over is an icon that's not doing its job, graphically speaking."

Apparently, that doesn't matter when it comes to the new build icons in Dazzle either. They're just going to slap a tooltip on it and be done with it _

I have to say, I like the icons in 1.19.1 much better than the old ones.
