 Description  « Hide
Sometimes, after changing clothes or skins, The texture used for my clothes will be a screen capture from the top left hand side of my screen, rather than the clothes texture. Other people in the world tell me that they see the same thing that I do.

This has the frightening effect of having me ending up wearing my IM window for all the world to see! This does not happen all the time, but it does happen frequently enough to be very worrying.

Why would the viewer even be uploading this information(or any texture information??), let alone using it as a texture for my clothes?

I've attached two screenshots - one of how I look to myself, and one as my friend saw me.

With a bit of trial and error, and reading up on how texture baking works, I've come up with some steps that always seem to result in this behavior:
1) From inventory, Select a skin.
2) Alt-tab out of second life to another window/Application. The other application seems to have to be full screen to reproduce this. (I've managed to reproduce this using firefox, windows explorer and outlook express.)
3) After a minute or two, Alt-tab back into Second life. My AV now looks like she's wearing a screen capture.

I'm running Second Life in a maximized window.

I can Alt-tab in/out without problem so long as I have not recently changed skin or clothing.

The issue is not really related to IMs; the image shown on my AV is from the top left of my screen, where my IM windows was sitting. Moving the IM window away from that spot results in me wearing an image of whatever I'm looking at in world.

giuseppa Morigi added a comment - 22/Nov/07 12:07 PM
I have the same problem. I found htat i can make it go away by taking off all clothes at once. But it comes back every now and then. Sometimes it covers the whole skin, but sometimes only the arms and/or the backside of my lower legs

Chandni Khondji added a comment - 26/Nov/07 03:21 PM
Have that very often. Usually it helps me to do a simply rebake (Crtl+Alt+R). It reloads the textures and the problem is gone for that moment and is easier than getting naked to dress again, especially in public winks

Distilled1 Rush added a comment - 28/Nov/07 08:36 AM
I get this all the time as I go from Firefox to max SL window.
Rebaking seems to work "most" the time but I have had it stick on all but my prim attachments and it is not always the upper left Corner I have had what ever I am up close reading burn in as well.

Sandra Greene added a comment - 01/Dec/07 04:36 AM
Same here. Sometimes it happens directly after login. I've experienced this problem for some months now, I can remember it occured to me already in July/August.

Rebaking helps, but sometimes takes an extremely long time (up to two minutes). Meanwhile, anybody around me can read my IM window as this is also on the upper left in my configuration.

Fix this bug asap!

I believe this is the same issue as VWR-3757, please see my comment there.

Naoki Ninetails added a comment - 27/Jan/08 11:26 PM - edited
This happens to me at least three or four times a day – always on my upper body or my EYES. It happens to my eyes a lot more. They'll take on a screenshot of my screen. It includes both the GUI and whatever's on my screen at the time. A rebake always fixes it, but it happens SO often that it's very obnoxious... and it doesn't just happen when I change clothes. I'll be minding my own business and bam, it'll just happen. As a matter of fact it happens 90% of the time with things I've been wearing for hours.

I believe it may have happened in Windlight, but it's happening to me a lot in the regular client. A LOT.

Naoki Ninetails added a comment - 29/Jan/08 09:33 AM - edited
Attached a new screenshot.

It's happening to me at least three or four times a day now... regular client. I don't have to do anything to bring it on, although today it happened about five minutes after I changed my clothes.

aric linden added a comment - 31/Jan/08 03:18 PM
we expect this to be fixed in the windlight branch. If it's not, please open a new issue.

Resolved wrong one - reopening

Alexa Linden added a comment - 14/Aug/08 09:05 AM
Thank you all for your comments. Two things we have noticed are that this seems to happen when:
  • someone is running two monitors and SL is running on the secondary monitor. (SL should be run on the main monitor to prevent a few issues we see - such as black avatar skin)
  • the SL window has a portion of it that is off-screen.

Most often, rebaking or editing appearance will correct this problem.

Please continue to add your feedback and let me know if the above points make any difference in the frequency any of you experience this.

Ochi Wolfe added a comment - 14/Aug/08 06:00 PM
I've made and attached a screenshot of a really interesting behavior which I heard of some times before but for which I never had a proof. It shows me wearing some ZHAO attachment as HUD. I had the screenshot-on-skin-bug again which showed the HUD on my chest. But what's really interesting is that a friend standing nearby told me that I'm using an old ZHAO version - so these wrong textures actually get uploaded and used on the avatar so everyone can see parts of my screen?

Btw: Yes, I'm using a Twinview setup on Gentoo Linux. Two others standing nearby saw the exact same texture on me too - one Linux user with Twinview as well and one Windows user with a single screen. But I can neither really confirm nor disprove the dual-screen or offscreen theories. It could be that it happened to me more often when SL was offscreen for a while, yes, but I'm not sure. Still I wonder why those textures then get uploaded for others to see...

lua11 Oh added a comment - 05/Sep/08 02:34 AM
Hi there,
since the newest update in september 2008 some clothes react very funny. Some produce "newspaper-like" appearings on arms and legs(pic1), some use textures from shoes and make that appear on the legs like in pic 2 and 3.

My computer: Intel CORE2 Duo E4400 2x2,0 GHz, 3 mn RAM, Nvidia Geforce 8600 GTS. And I tested it with another computer. This one reacts in the same way.

Kandy Tomorrow added a comment - 14/Sep/08 08:25 AM
Alexa, I often notice this when I have another window open, then close or minimize it. It does not happen every time. However, I have had it happen both when my av was behind the other window and still visible on my screen. I've also had it suddenly happen AFTER I've closed the window, sometimes as late as 30 seconds after closing it.

Vivito Volare added a comment - 25/Sep/08 10:59 PM
I would call it fashionable, in an abstract futurist sort of way. Certainly not my regular fair. (in some cases, my regular fair seems to have taken the new look on permanently.)

The partial occlusion seems a fairly plausible explanation. I had it happen a second time while working up this comment.

rather annoying.

This issue has affected me also. I have experienced as in PIC.1 and PIC.3 strange texture issues when wearing certain clothing items. Its seems to produce "newspaper" like images on the arms and legs. I also have an issue with attaching a shoe base. It gives the appearence of wearing black pants when worn. This started for me 2 days ago Sept 25/08.

For the reporters with a Nvidia graphics driver from the 177 & 178 series, the main issues are VWR-7957 & VWR-9358. Please add your vote and comments to those issues.

The workaround for 177 series drivers is to

enable the Advanced Menu Ctl > Alt > D

disable rendering palletized textures: rendering > features > palletized textures Ctl - Alt - F7

and then rebake Ctl - Alt - R

Thank you

Hiya, I'm experiencing the same issue and even had a lower back tattoo (as a jacket) show up on the front of my avs neck. Then of course, the lovely black or white pants I get from either boots, socks or jackets. I would gladly lend a hand (pixel) into finding a solution. I'm very flexible and can be on to demonstrate the problem for you at just about any time. As well as try out any new patches you may be working on. I'm anxious to get this resolved, as half of my inventory is now sadly unwearable. I've attached a pic of my av with or without a jacket. Thanks for your attention in this matter, I can't wait for it to be resolved...(i'tll be like my birthday, complete with new clothes!!!)

Got the same problem as well. My whole upper body/arms/hands become the color of the shirt (i.e. all black) and using Ella McMahon's quick fix is the only way to restore the proper textures. I'm only using one lcd monitor.

Opensource Obscure added a comment - 07/Nov/08 08:48 AM - edited
I have been occasionally experiencing this bug since I started using Second Life, in Fall 2006, across various Linux distributions and different Nvidia video cards/drivers. This happens both on regular, First Look, and self-built viewers. I only use one monitor.

Maggie Darwin added a comment - 12/Nov/08 07:59 AM
Seeing your viewer window as clothes is annoying.

Having others in-world see your viewer window as your clothes is embarrassing.

Having others in-world see other windows on your desktop as your clothes is a high-severity security exposure and requires immediate attention.

Want2 Tinkel added a comment - 24/Nov/08 12:01 PM
I have begun experienceing this problem within the past three weeks. The only change I can recall making during this time is that I bought a new lcd monitor. Prior to that, I used one of the CRT monitors. I have NVIDIA graphics card, 8400 GS. I have noticed the upper left area of my screen being textured onto my clothing. The other day, if I put on a certain jacket, it covered my entire body, including my hands and feet. I am able to correct the problem on a particular item of clothing by going into appearance mode, changing one dimension if even only by one number and then saving it. This is a very irritating issue and greatly reduces my enjoyment of the SL experience. I hope it is resolved soon.

Here is my system information:

This has happened to me as well. Although rebaking fixes the issue, if it keeps happening then this is an important fix.

I have to concur this poses a security risk of the highest order.

This is still happenning to me on the newest RC I've installed today. It's been happening pretty much every single day since I joined SL. Rebake always fixes it, sometimes it takes a couple of tries. Nearly always seems to be connected with going off to look at another window that ins't the SL viewer, but today I experienced the texture just switching when I wasn't doing anything else. Not running two monitors, and no part of the SL window is off-screen.

Just adding this also affects 1.23rc.

Roslynd Turbo added a comment - 19/May/09 08:25 AM
Experienced this several times but I kno whow to prevent it.

Do your re-bake but stay with the SL window in the foreground until the rebake is entirely complete (I'd suggest waiting about 2 full minutes)

This bug never manifests if SL is int he foreground (for me anyway) once the rebaking is entirely complete then you can minimize or switch to another application without issue.

Obviously if you change clothing or anything that would alter the textures on your av - wait the full 2 mins before moving off the SL window again.

still, would be really nice to get this fixed - as it's a major pain.

Satomi Ahn added a comment - 28/May/09 06:23 AM
@Roslynd: this concurs with my own observations. Definitely this happens only when textures are baked in background.
Well, I wouldn't call the issue serious... but still, the failure to fix this small thing in one and half a year says long...

I have not seen this and I run SL on my secondary screen (it has it's own screen rather than fighting with other apps) However I cannot remember what viewer I was using when I was recently changing my skin a lot (cause of uploading home made fixes). I'm pretty sure it was an RC viewer and was a couple of months ago. Sorry for being vague but I thought I should add that I use two screens and SL is on the secondary and I have not seen this happen.

Lewis Luminos added a comment - 05/Jun/09 01:19 AM
Lately I've been using some alternate viewers instead of the official ones. In the past 3 months I've been using the Rainbow (variant of the Cool Viewer) and the Greenlife Emerald viewer. I've had absolutely no incidences of this bug using the RV, and only twice on the EV. Coming down from an incidence rate of approximately once an hour, I think this is a great improvement.

Lares Carter added a comment - 08/Jun/09 12:09 AM
This happens to me all the time. After almost every login my skin and clothing show a snapshot of my current screen. If i switch with alt + tab between applications and later switch back to Second Life, then in most of the cases it happend again.
Doing a rebake only fixes the problem on my screen, everyone else around still sees me with the messed up textures. I have to either teleport away and back or fly up to an insane height and back down to fix it for everyone else in the same region.
Also i got asked about my clothing and skin looking weird several times, while it looked normal on my screen.
On a side note, i am always wearing the same outfit.

Most the time i use the Public Nightly, but it also happens with the Release Candidate and the official viewer.

I have seen this for some time now. It was originally thought to be directly related to VWR-9358, but that doesn't seem to be the case since that was resolved for me quite a while ago. I don't have a multi-monitor setup and generally keep the SL window maximized. Baking textures with SL with background focus seems to soundly reproduce it. Rebaking with Alt+R clears the skin. Nothing seems to prevent it from happening again, and of course since it's part of texture baking others can see it too.

Same problem here, actually been having it for some while now, happens most of the logiins i do every night. ctrl-alt-r seems to fix the problem. Its not only me seeing myself weird, other people see these textures on me as well

Occasional problem that now occurs on almost every log in and TP.

Satomi Ahn added a comment - 18/Jun/09 07:59 AM
We're starting to see a pattern here:
  • affects only nVidia users (and drivers 177, 180 and 185 series at least)
  • affects both Linux and Windows (XP or Vista... what about MacOSX?)
  • has been here since 1.20 and is still in 1.23 and SnowGlobe
  • happens when the avatar texture rebakes while the viewer is in background

(really looks like a video memory addressing issue... but everyone must have already figured that out by now)

Anything else?

Um, as for Mac OS X... 'They' resolved VWR-1001 because it was a duplicate of this one (even though of course 1001 was reported before 3282, so technically this one is the dupe). So I assume every info added over there can be copied and pasted into here.

I am having the same problem on current 1.23 stable release. I also have a problem where sometimes my clothing such as my pants decide it want's to extend it's length into a bell bottom???

Also normally when I crash and come back in I'm textured with whatever scenery is in front of me.

Being plastered with textures from surrounding objects or screen windows happens to me pretty often on login and in rare cases after a teleport. Sometimes only the avatars eyes are affected, sometimes the entire body.
No part of the window is off-screen and I am no using 2 monitors.

Newest NVIDIA Driver installed. Pretty annoying to have to rebake each time after login or TPs (just in case because I don't want to stare at people with hollow eyes).

After a hint regarding new texture baking and baked textured being cache I kept same clothes/skin etc on for a couple of days (until they finally started to smell). It had no positive effect on the texture baking. They were still wrong most of the times when I logged in again.

I think I finally found a (partial?) repro that works every time for me. It mixes up the baked textures, offsets them, distorts them. I haven't noticed another part of the screen placed inside the textures yet (like I did before), but I guess that might be pure coincidence.

I'm running Arch Linux on a NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 640 MB with the latest drivers.

To repro this:

  • Log in to SL, let your clothing load.
  • Rebake textures manually and minimize the window immediately after that (while SL is still working on the rebake).
  • Best use shortcuts for rebake and minimize, you gotta be quick. When running Linux and Gnome with its default settings, try Ctrl-Alt-R and Alt-F9.

Observed:

  • After a few seconds, when the rebaked textures have uploaded, they appear on the avatar. They should be more or less distorted.

If anyone could try to confirm this? Looking at the source code, what happens in lltexlayer.cpp is a glReadPixels() after the texture layers are projected orthogonally. I don't really have the time to compile the viewer myself and play around with it atm, but if anyone wants to check if such things like minimizing the viewer could screw up the offscreen rendering for the textures...

I just started playing SL today like 2 hours ago and this is the first thing I noticed that was wrong with the graphics. Seems every time I go to edit my appearance the small windows get filled with textures that are around me and the text in the game messed up too therefore I am unable to edit my looks. My video card driver is updated to date. I have never used 2 screens on my computer although that would be sweet. I tried re-installing SL, deleting the cache folder, putting the quality of the game to Ultra, re-bake the character and still the problem persist. Anyone know if they are going to get this fixed soon?

I've had this issue for going a year and a half now. I've submitted multiple tickets to LL and haven't heard anything back. Infact, that have closed all tickets, but I reopened them.

This happens to me daily and rebaking sometimes even makes it worse.

The problem is linked to my ACCOUNT, not my computer. I have been on multiple computers and have had this happen to me. I never ever have this problem on my alt either.

What gives?

Confirmed with both the stable official LL viewer 1.23.5 (136262) and Snowglobe 1.2.4 (3007).

http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?ID=420788
http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?ID=420789
http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?ID=420791

I cleared cache and restarted the viewer, but there were no improvements - note how the UI appears on the avatar skin, this is visible by other users as well.
http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?ID=420794

I don't run 2 monitors, and in my setup the SL window never has a portion of it that is off-screen (in Aug 08 Alexa Linden suggested to check these things).

I want to stress that this is a critical bug because private data disclosure can easily happen.

In my case, it appears that this is triggered by switching to other running applications than Second Life; but again, this is something users are supposed to do routinely, and I think that "don't switch to other windows" can't be an acceptable workaround.

I unfortunetly repro this issue (using viewer 1.23.5 (136262)) very often when I return the focus from another windows app back to the SL client. But rebaking always clears the issue for me. Nevertheless a bit disturbing.

Wolfie Rankin added a comment - 30/Nov/09 04:30 PM
It's worth noting that rebaking will work for YOU, however others will still see you with the texture fault. and I'm not even sure that restarting SL will help.

Wolfie!

Tofu Linden added a comment - 01/Dec/09 05:39 AM
That shouldn't be true - texture rebakes are (supposed to be) propagated up to the server and out to other viewers.

Tofu Linden added a comment - 01/Dec/09 05:44 AM
Anyone who sees this problem a lot, could you try setting the 'RenderUseFBO' debug setting to TRUE? This should stop recurrence of the problem if this option is supported on your video card. There may be a small performance hit, but usually not (at least on nVidia). Please report back if this helps/hurts. Thanks!

Ezian Ecksol added a comment - 01/Dec/09 10:07 AM - edited
@Wolfie, I can easily repro, so I tested again, Tofu is right, it's propagated (for me with (up to) 20 seconds delay) to an alt (using different cache).

edit: hm, tested a 3rd time and now I needed some minutes where I repeatly rebaked textures to get my alt being aware of it ... maybe network lag, dont know.

Raylene Galicia added a comment - 01/Dec/09 10:20 AM - edited
I tried doing the "renderusefbo" as you mentioned and it now shows my neighbors "no entry" ban lines INSIDE my store...I changed the setting back to False and instantly ban lines are gone...so NOT a good fix!

Tofu Linden added a comment - 01/Dec/09 10:32 AM
But does it solve THIS problem?

Tayra Dagostino added a comment - 01/Dec/09 11:35 AM
no, FBO don't work, both TRUE neither FALSE, all time viewer rebake texture (first login, minimized to icon, viewer in background and another app foreground) my IM or txture from object around visible area will rendered on my body....

i see from debug window:

when i put icon or background:
2009-12-01T19:34:02Z INFO: gatherInput: SDL deiconification state switched to 0

when i take back foreground viewer:
2009-12-01T19:34:04Z INFO: gatherInput: SDL deiconification state switched to 1

is hard to put a check to viewer to suspend or clear baking cache when viewer back foreground or/and suspend rendering process of avatar when is icon/background?

Wolfie Rankin added a comment - 01/Dec/09 04:27 PM
In detail, my experience with rebaking is that I'll be on ABC Island (usually) and be told that I look weird, Now if I rebake, it could take up to an hour for others to see the updated look, or they won't see it at all.

I have another issue where my pants (shorts) sort of affect the textures on my lower leg, resulting in something that looks like torn, multicoloured "flares" (70's pants).
this error usually occurs after a teleport, But a friend suggested that I go to appearances in this case and change the length of my pants with the slider and then put it back to the size it was, it only takes a second, and the effect goes away.

Wolfie!

Wolfie, I think you're referring to VWR-37 which has been around in JIRA even longer than this one? Maybe you like to vote for that one too.

Maghnus Balogh added a comment - 01/Dec/09 06:20 PM - edited
I did some thorough testing with the most recent official viewer since this issue picked up some steam in the recent days. Toggling 'RenderUseFBO' makes no difference whatsoever. However, and interestingly, disabling anti-aliasing prevents the issue altogether. I double-checked these results. With 4x AA enabled in SL's advanced graphics options, I can reproduce this at least every time I login by bringing another window to the front (such as opening notepad, for instance) and letting it stay that way until my avatar bakes. However, with No AA I can't find a way to reproduce it. Mind you, a simple Ctrl+Alt+R rebake still does correct the corrupted baked texture.

Well I have the same problem that I saw on the photos of the top, and I tried the last thing "Quit AA" and It seems that resolves the issue, but, when a real solution? I tried in different computers and nothing, I tried creating an Alt account and its fixed for the Alt but no for my Main account, so the only solution its downgrade the graphics? I dont understand.
