oh.. and shiny prims are also transparent for me..
Same on my 2900XT, this sounds like it an issue with ATi cards, but some cards are ok with it.
My old single core intel p4 with an ATI a1950 pro renders Shiny and water reflections perfect (see screen shot.)
IT does have worse issues like this bug. screenshot 2
There are ton of shiny objects in this and all render fine on this x1950 with 7.10 drivers. Trice Beam,
Would you be so kind to post your settings in Catalyst Control Center . Thanks a lot. I do not use Catalyst Control Center it hog memory for no reason it is never insalled.
I just installed " 7.10 display drivers only "package from (ati.com) and set everything with ATI tray tools and the classic control pannel from ver 6.9. (http://www.guru3d.com/article/atitraytools/189/ Since I don't use any "Catalyst Control Center" version or have it installed that might be the problem. everything is set to default install settings and application preference. (Antialising anstophic filtering) "mip map" detail high Catalyst AI-off open gl triple buffering enable "ati tray tools shader tweeks enabled" the x1950 pro is a 512 mb looks the same as my 8800 gtx system when it works. Uninstalled "Catalyst Control Center", tried Firstlook.
Tried the atitraytools. Tried the omega ATI drivers. None of these make any difference. Would love to try it on XP machine, but that's a lot of work. Same Bug with an ATI Card X600.
Added the screenshot N°3. It must be ATI windows vista driver since they are coded in a new way for the new windows vista kernel.
I have never used this x1950 with vista only the Direct x 10 8800 gtx and it works in vista. Now on 7.11 drivers and ofcourse latest FirstLook. No change.
Seconded; ATI X1950 pro on Vista home premium. Same problem as described. I think Trice is right, this has something to do with the vista drivers.
Also submitted the issue to ATI. They ask for Vista feedback on their site.
It's not only on Vista. My drivers are for Windows XP.
See this issue http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3401
Thanks a lot for the reports, helps to know a number of you have been seeing this. I'm importing it for further investigation by our graphics gurus.
If you haven't already provided your system info, particularly your graphics card, please do so! Torley, i am not sure if this is good idea to mark the
Torley, Thanks for pointing me those issue tracker help page. I know how the support and help-desk teams work. I saw these problems opened as a separate issues but people write there about system configuration, drivers or even the ATI Catalyst versions. This issue shows that those things does have nothing to it and those problems are related to the "new" cards family. So it might be good issue for somebody assigned to this issue.
I'm using an ATI Radeon X1800, with driver version 8.383.0.0, Catalyst. The shiny prims do not work unless I disable "basic shaders." After that, the shiny prims appear normal. If I try to enable "basic shaders" then they turn very transparent. They are still visible, but they are at about 10% opacity. Also, I do get "invisiprim" shiny prims that go completely invisible from time to time. It's difficult to tell what triggers it, but if I right-click an "invishiny" prim, it'll appear again.
Update: I installed the new Firstlook client for Windlight, and the 7.11 drivers for my Radeon x1800, and no change.

CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2010 MHz) I'm not using the catalyst control centre. only the display drivers. Ahh, according to the data presented and in other links you would appear to be right, Jono, and then looking at Warkirby; It may not be Vista, but any card ATI X1950 and up. Does anyone have one of the HD series cards or a X1950 that DOES work?
I fixed the fallback on cards that do not support glsl very well (ATI on vista, NVIDIA beta drivers, possibly all ATI x2xxx on XP though I've yet to test that one) such that shiny will no longer be transparent and you'll get some GL fog in the scene. However, there is little we can do about the water and the other shaders right now as this is due to them not supporting glsl well in these latest drivers (Basically, numerous shaders fail to link properly.). The ATI 7.12 drivers should be out shortly and my contact at ATI says it may help. We'll see. This is another case of GL not being as well supported as DirectX. For now, I'll stay in touch with them and hope this situation gets better. Thanks for bearing with us.
I have an ATI 2900Pro and Vista 32Bit with the latest ATI Catalyst Drivers and can confirm i get none of the fancy windlight stuff and shiny things are transparent.
As I mentioned before I'm having issues with basic shaders in the standard viewer.
I was wondering how many of you have the same issues with the standard viewer. Please check out ( I'm sure you'd all love to get the Windlight fixed up as soon as possible but as it seems it has a long way to go, I would dearly love to get the standard viewer looking respectable in the meantime. Maybe all I have to do is sit it out for the 7.12 drivers to come out but I'd rather do something proactive just on the offchance there may be another reason for my graphics issues. Hi there!
I've been having this problem since I upgraded my card. Windlight's water worked flawlessly for my Radeon X1600 Pro, but now that I have an NVidia 8800GT, the water refuses to work in the ways described in the original issue. I figure this is a problem with driver support, and I figure it'll be fixed before First Look is released. It's pretty disappointing to have your brand new, top of the line video card cripple Second Life when your old card was working fine. =( I won't bother posting system specs, because clearly it's a card-related issue(I had the same system setup with my older card). If it's really necessary I will, but. Oh, but this is important; I am not running Vista. I am running Windows XP Home Edition.
A lot of people have been saying this problem is native to Vista, or to ATI, but I am having the same problem on XP with a new NVidia card. Just worth saying. Darkhormony, turn off Adaptive Antialiasing and Catalyst A.I. in Catalyst Control Panel and your terrain should go back to normal.
ATI catalyst 7.12 does NOT help. still flat looking water.
Until yesterday I had cat 7.11 and water was great - full reflections. I've been waiting for the 7.12 drivers to fix a couple of other issues - and now I have the flat water issue too.
XP Pro - SP3 RC, X1950GT (overclocked), Athlon XP64 4200 X2, latest Windlight viewer (75762), 2 Gig RAM. So for me - 7.12 broke what worked before. Yep, 7.12 didn't work for me either. I'm still talking to ATI about it, and I'll let you know when there's any progress.
Very odd, with the last Windlight release, and ATI 7.10 drivers, I had the 256 color banding, but the water reflections worked. Now I go to this latest release of Windlight, and the 7.12 drivers, no 256 color banding, but now no water reflections or shiny. :\ Seems I can't win.
Second Life 1.18.6 (76116) Dec 19 2007 09:54:25 (Second Life WindLight) I have the same problem. I can't see any water reflections at all and I've tried almost all possible combinations of graphics settings.
Second Life 1.18.6 (76116) Dec 19 2007 09:54:25 (Second Life WindLight) CPU: Intel Pentium 4 Northwood (2827 MHz) I think ATI broke something..
Under 7.12 Water shaders/reflection is broken in both Windlight 76116 and 75762 First i reinstalled 75762 while still running 7.12 alongside 76116 (in a different directory) to see if it was WL that broke. Next, i rolled back the device driver to 7.11 One of two possibilities: WL was always ok and ATI fixed something from 7.10 to 7.11, and rebroke it on 7.12 what would the chances be that ATI broke something very specific that actually worked in WL and fix it re-revealing a programming flaw in WL considering ATI NEVER EVEN MENTIONS Second Life in their Catalyst release notes of Bug Fixes and Known Issues? (Never! not even when ATI released the Vista driver to allow SL to run! And THAT was a big deal on Vista's launch!) pretty darn slim i would imagine... So, now I'm happily running Windlight 76116 on an ATI Radeon X1950 under Catalyst 7.11 with no graphical problems. (Win XP Home SP2) @Kettu
Thats on a X1950, I can assure you that 7.10, 7.11 and 7.12 that water reflections are broken on the HD 2000 series of cards. Also reflective water never worked running SL on Vista to begin with so not alot has changed for me. And I'm not about to pull my HD 2900 out and go back to my X1900XT, I like my DX10 games way too much. Glad to hear Windlight works for you though. Doesn't surprise me ATi pretty much quietly supports SL, even mainstream game publications (PcGamer et al) lambast SecondLife and generally poke fun of anyone who uses it or supports it. Well, I too have vista and a X1950. Newest windlight, still running 7.11.. i have the big spiral in the sky now, and no water, still. I dunno what Kettu did or what is different about his system; I suppose it has something to do with the roll back of his drivers and a 'fresh' reinstall..
Second Life Server 1.18.6.75511
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 (Unknown model) (2992 MHz) Same issues as above. I can confirm that reverting to the 7.11 drivers restored water shaders here on X1950 - XP Pro.
Still got the spiral - but at least it's an improvement. FOR SKY BLACK-BANDING ISSUE - try this (works for me)
Client-> Debug Settings -> WLSkyDetail -> value = 274 or greater up to 409 (410+ crashes!) value of 273 is the highest "bad" value, all values below seem to be a non-random issue of whether the banding happens or not values 274 or greater - all good then it gets worse when you go lower: lower is even screwier: 36 is the minimum value for the black banding; 273 is the maximum... 0 crashes the client, as does 410 and higher, and results in being reset to 286 on restart If i can find it, i will post this in the proper place.. . I have this problèms too..
CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (2133 MHz) I have this problem on an older ATI card.
Origonally my old 6.44 drivers made the sky yellow and clouds green. I upgraded my drivers to version 8.442 and this fixed everything except the water. The water does not ripple at all, though it did for a while when they first introduced the water shaders. CPU: Intel Xeon 2800mhz Mem: 1000MB Windows XP (2600) SP2 I'm using an ATI Radeon X1800, and I've updated my drivers to 7.12; I am also using the latest version of the WL client. Glow has been fixed for me, and shiny prims no longer go invisible. However, water reflections do not work at all no matter what level I put them on.
Everything works except the Water Shader for me....

Sigh!
Nor for me. Cat 8.1 make no difference at all. Getting to sound like a stuck record. Over 6 months now since I reported fairly identical SL water issues on the standard viewer and there's been absolutely no progress at all since then. I've filled in the ATI Catalyst Crew Feedback form and submitted a ticket on their website. Perhaps if they got enough complaints they might give this issue a higher priority. Nope, the new 8.1 doesn't fix it for me either.
w00t! Talked to ATI, gave me some good pointers on how to change our shaders to get them to work. The problem was with our varying parameters during linking. I changed our shaders varying parameters to be accessed through a separate file, and they seem to work on all ATI now.
Hi, got the same prob too with my new ATI HD 3850 crossfire card
hope it will be fixed soon Systeminformation: zen, do we have a date so we can finally see water reflections?
I bought this ATI card specially to get all from SL graphics... will there be a turnaround before the next version? thanks Hi, i have same problem,

CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (3013 MHz) Wooo..... nearly..... Just installed the new Windlight Viewer. For the first time ever I can see water on my Vista 64 / ATI x1950xtx combo. Also, not sure if it's relevant here but switching Atmospheric Shaders off and on moves the horizon up and down. With AS off, horizon is noticably higher than with it on. Still, it's progress and I now feel that I can contribute more with some of the other issues (like transparent becoming white at distances, pixel borders around object and too bright night levels). I'm still having a few too many issues for me to consider this my main viewer though so back to the standard one for me for now. Skies are lovely, no water reflections still.
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 (Unknown model) (3192 MHz) Not this release. The next one. Looks great on my 2600 HD on XP and Vista with the 8.1 drivers. We'll try and get it out to you soon
Atmospheric Shaders and Water Reflections can't be displayed at the same time.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 (2.66GHz) WOOT!!!!! /me crosses fingers, toes, and everything else that can be crossed...
can;t wait!!! CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2194 MHz) Yup this current build looks promising, I can have pretty water wih no clouds or pretty clouds and no pretty water so we're getting closer and by what Zen says it sounds like we'll hit a breakthrough next build. I'll continue to watch the blog like a hawk for the next build.
while I wait for the next release... I have a turnaround to get sun and light the way I want with water reflections:
turn on atmospheric shaders, open advanced sky, turn off atmospheric shaders and turn on water reflections. I can change all items there, some of them changes atmospheric look. (light, sun position) Thankyou so much for persevereing and getting so far to fixing this! now use ATi users can apprecaite the beauty you have added to SL
My card and info are listed below. Since the release of the new (7.12) ATI drivers, I've been able to get the sky and glow to work, but two things are broken, and not just the water: Water, and Avatar Cloth. In my graphics preferences, no matter how high my graphics are set (and I usually have it set to ultra) and no matter how low, I cannot get "Avatar Cloth" to become ungrayed for me. Not only is it grayed, but it is unchecked. I've tried every preference combination I can think of in order to try to get water and avatar cloth to work, but to no avail. Avatar cloth worked just fine on previous clients, so it makes no sense that it would now be disabled. I've tried disabling as many of the new shaders as I can, but still cannot get it to work. Obviously, water is still broken for me.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1994 MHz) I get an new bug, graphic bug, take a look on it, Ati Radeon HD 3850, and look what it makes with glow
OK - this is odd.
Same viewer - same graphics card - same drivers (RX1950GT - CCC 8.1). In fact - the only thing that's changed is today's grid code update - and water shaders are working with atmospheric shaders. I have all the bells and whistles again. The only problem was that my ripple texture blanked out. I selected one from the standard inventory library - and it's all there. What else did the code upgrade today do? Thank you Lindens. This is fixed now with the latest Windlight viewer, at least for me and I am so grateful. The world I see now is beautiful and the sun glitters like mad in the water
dances..water..clouds....am i dreaming.....pinches arm......ouch!!...nope im awake
Thank you very much lindens for altering the shaders so us ATI users can enjoy the full effect of windlight After the forced update last night, all looks great again! Thank you!!!!

Thanks to the Lindens, the world looks better now! After the update last night, I am happy to report that all shaders are working properly on my Radeon Mobiilty x1800, including my long-awaited water! However, I'm having crash issues. I'll save that for another issue though.
The update has helped me some; now I can see water if I turn off Atmospheric Shaders. I can even see reflections in it (and they are stunning, I must say.) However, if I have Atmospheric Shaders enabled, then the water vanishes. I don't mean it has no reflections, I mean it's not there at all.
With Atmospheric Shaders disabled, the water returns. This is true no matter what any of the other settings say. (And I tried 'em all, including the old fix of going to Estate Tools.) See Screenshots 5 and 6, to see what I mean. I'm on a Mac, running System 10.4.11, with 3.5 GB DDR SDRAM, and an ATI Radeon 9600 XT Graphics card, with 128 MB of VRAM Oops. I never put a screenshot on an issue before, and didn't realize that these comments weren't going to be attached to the screenshot. Please disregard them.

I'm still not seeing any changes in the water in Windlight. The sliders move, but nothing changes. I'm not sure what information about my computer that I should post, but here's what I find under "Hardware" and "Graphics"
Hardware Overview: Model Name: MacBook Intel GMA 950: Chipset Model: GMA 950 This issue was resolved as "Needs More Info" during our batch cleanup because it was set as affecting First Look: WindLight. On the Issue Tracker, we've noticed many duplicate issues and issues that lacked actionable info or were already fixed.
WindLight recently "graduated" from a "First Look" technology preview to Release Candidate status – nearing inclusion in the main viewer with your help! So, "First Look: WindLight" does not exist anymore. More info and how to download the RC viewer: http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/03/06/new-release-candidate-viewer-1191-rc0-available/ If you've verified that this issue is still a problem in the newest Release Candidate, here's what to do next: (1) Search the Issue Tracker to make sure it isn't a duplicate of an existing issue we know about. If it is, link it as a duplicate using the "Link this issue..." link on the left. You can learn more about searching by watching this video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAlXK5hSVMc (2) Reopen the issue and BE SURE to update the "Affects Version/s" to the correct one, most likely ONLY "1.19.1 Release Candidate". However, if this bug affects the main viewer (1.19.0 as of this writing), then DO NOT set it to an RC version. Only set it to 1.19.0 instead. Be as specific with versions as possible – there's generally no need to set multiple versions, as it tends to dilute and confuse where a bug originated. (3) Add any other relevant details that would help us fix it. We can't stress the importance of a "solid repro" enough – a reliable series of steps to make a bug happen reliably. (4) Come and attend our inworld bug triages, where you can meet with Linden Lab employees to look at, verify, and expedite bugs for fixing.
