Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-1256
Linden Lab Internal Branch: windlight13

 Description  « Hide
Repro from Torley Linden:

You'll need two avatars for this, let's call them Resi A and Resi B. Resi A should be running WindLight, Resi B should be running the main viewer. Both should be in different locations to start with.

- Resi A: Stand on a platform about 500 m in the sky.
- Resi B: Add some attachments to yourself if you haven't yet.
- Resi A: Teleport Resi B.
* Observe: Resi A can see Resi B's nametag but not their avatar. Resi B sees both of them fine.
= Expected: Avatars should always be rendered after a teleport.

I couldn't repro this on an avatar without attachments.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

A person TP'd in and the only thing visible was their name tag. They relogged and everything was ok. Then another person TP'd away and came back and they too became invisible. This happened for another person running Windlight 1st look that was standing next to me (the AVs disappeared for her too.) Not sure if altitude is an issue, we were at 700 meters.

A friend of mine is also having this issue. It might be releated to the other bugs with invisible objects. Also, are you sure you don't have a ATi Radeon 9600, since afaik the GeForce 9 series doesn't exist yet. You can try copy/pasting the information in the top half of the Help > About Second Life menu.

psistorm ikura - 15/Nov/07 01:29 PM
Im seeing the same. Im running a geforce 8800GTX with 158.22 drivers
priority should be raised btw, as its a frequent and rather important bug

lufpleh obstreperous - 16/Nov/07 07:58 AM
try unchecking Avatar Imposter in Preferances.

I was trying windlight and went to the Hanja Welcome area, normally a busy place, all I could see was name tags and the odd AV body.
Turned off Avater Imposter and everyone else appeared as normal.

Torley Linden - 19/Nov/07 10:11 AM
Oh, I think I know what this is! The "700 meters" part tipped me off. I'll retitle and link this to a known internal issue. THANKS for reporting it!

JJ Niven - 19/Nov/07 11:30 AM
Corrected: nVidia 7600GS not 9600

ZATZAi Asturias - 27/Nov/07 03:53 AM
I've been seeing this happen regularly, my partner is on the old client and I'm on Windlight. When we meet in our skybox for the first time since loggin in she is invisible to me. I've found having her sit and stand on a scripted seat once or twice fixes it (May or may not work with an unscripted seat).

Onder Skall - 27/Nov/07 10:31 AM
I get this too, although I'm not 100% sure how much attachments have to do with it... 57 Miles is always invisible to me and doesn't wear visible attachments that I've noticed. Oh, well maybe his shoes...

One thing we have noticed: if the invisible avatar SITS DOWN, they become visible right away! Stand, and they disappear again.

This happened to us at 666m (exactly). I'd attach a screenshot but... I can't figure out the Java-based submit tool. *hangs head in shame*

Torley Linden - 28/Nov/07 10:24 AM
@Onder and ZATZAi: Intriguing observation. I'll let Brad Linden know.

And, if you use the "Attach file" link on the left and select a JPG, then that will work fine. No shame required. :)

JJ Niven - 28/Nov/07 11:43 AM
I have found that having the invisble avatar remove and then reattach one of their attachments they become visible thereafter.

Marcus Huet - 30/Nov/07 11:32 AM
I also found that sometimes you can tp to another part of the sim and come back and it fixes it as well. I have a skybox myself and when some of my friends tp there they are invisible I tp down to the land and tp back and sometimes they reappear for me.

Davey Callisto - 30/Nov/07 11:51 PM
I concur. Get this problem every time I log in at my sky home. My partner is always invisible. Sometimes she re-appears after standing/re-sitting on something or teleports away and back. But always invisible when I log in. That's about 600 meters up.

Rex Skinstad - 02/Dec/07 01:07 AM
I have had this issue running Windlight on an iMac using Mac OS 10.4.11 (i.e., NOT Leapard) and a ATI Radeon HD 2600 Video card. Only happens at skyboxes, usually clubs, so I presumed was just lag from crowded dancefloors. I can see the nametags from when I arrive, but the invisible AVIs don't render until they sit or use a poseball of some sort. Can't ask a stranger to sit for me, so a little awkward!

Krazzora Zaftig - 06/Dec/07 07:35 AM
This error appears for Resident A or B and seems random in my case at my place which is 601 meters in the air. Just had one resident say I was invis and was in sim before her when she TPed in and then another resident TPed in and I could not see them. TPin again worked for first person and second person attachment readdition worked.

Here is the deal, WindLight latest client, sky platform. I am on the center, at the left there is an avatar, but can only see the title (name and group). At the right there is the avatar's title. After the ghost avatar left the title stayed there.

Nimrod Szondi - 08/Dec/07 02:55 AM
Here are the settings what I used.

Nimrod Szondi - 08/Dec/07 03:01 AM
Attached two screenshots. System Win XP, vga is Ati X1600, driver ok. I noticed a few times that I can't see some avatars inworld, usually the same ones. Noticed right now only on sky platforms. On the first picture you can see a typical case, can see only the name and group, but no avatar. Found another bug here, the avatar had a titler. The title stayed at one point, didn't moved with the avatar. Later when I moved around the title was still there. On the second screen you can see my settings. Tried to turn off the avatar impostor, but no change. The ghost avatars didn't used anything special (textures for example) and no relations with the attachments (some has many, some has nearly nothing).

Strife Onizuka - 11/Dec/07 01:39 AM
There is a script deruth, it exacerbates this problem. It hurls the user up several hundred meters then back down very quickly. Some avatars that were hidden show up, and some that were visible become hidden. The results are unpredictable.

Inventing Tomorrow - 13/Dec/07 08:24 AM
I and my compatriots running windlight also experience this problem at 700+ altitudes. In addition, some of the prims making up the skybox will not render at various times...though they are still there cause you do not fall through the floor when you walk over it. The prims not rendering happens much less than the avatars disappearing, which happens all the time in an unpredictable fashion.

Computer A - both AV's visible

Beezle Warburton - 17/Dec/07 03:42 AM
Computer B - One avatar invisible

dian despres - 19/Dec/07 05:28 PM
i get this problem well below 700 meters. My skybox is at 483 meters. I am alone in the skybox and when i offer a TP the visitor is invisible. If however the visitor uses an existing landmark to join me there isn't a problem. So far this has happened 4 out of 4 times.

Torley Linden - 20/Dec/07 11:29 AM
Thanks for the additional comments and info, we appreciate knowing it happens to you too and we have a solid repro (can make it happen at will) -- we're continuing to work on this.

The workaround JJ Niven described works for me too.

Torley Linden - 20/Dec/07 11:51 AM
Even simpler, I find you don't have to detach an object -- if someone's invisible, ask them to attach anything to themselves and their avatar should reappear. If you just see their attachments, zoom in closer.

phil deakins - 22/Dec/07 08:03 AM
I get this very often. I have a store at ~500m. When I'm in it people often tell me that they can see my nametag but no't me. I use the normal viewer and I always wear attachments. I tell them that it's because they are using the WindLight viewer, and they always are. I'm going to try the sit-stand method that somebody mentioned.

I agree with the person who suggested that this bug's priority should be raised. Imo, it's a big fault - almost a fundamental fault - so much more important than tweaking when it gets dark, for instance.

Drew Dwi - 22/Dec/07 02:48 PM
Need to get people to vote on the issue. It is disappointing that two releases have occurred without this being fixed.

Angsty Rossini - 29/Dec/07 11:43 PM - edited
Using the update Windlight client released 30 Dec, was attending a class at a sky classroom and 2 avatars nearby were invisible. When Windlight crashed 30 minutes later, I relogged back in with the normal client and they were both visible

Environment - OSX 10.4.11, Core2Duo Processor, 2GB RAM, ATI Raedeon Mobility X1600 graphics card

Angsty Rossini - 29/Dec/07 11:44 PM
This avatar's name and edit beam is visible- just not the avatar

Angsty Rossini - 29/Dec/07 11:47 PM
another invisible avatar building at a sky classroom

Zed Drebin - 11/Jan/08 06:04 AM
Having the invisible Avatar sit will often make it visible.

Zedekiah Nightfire - 11/Jan/08 06:08 AM
I agree with Zed, that having the avatar sit can cure it - But not always. In fact this bug is the reason I've been staying away from Windlight lately, as it is a daily problem for me in my Skybox.

Haravikk Mistral - 11/Jan/08 06:24 AM
Only thing I can think to add; it only seems to happen with teleports. Avatars which log-in to an area (i.e. - it is their home or was their last-location) don't seem to be affected. My alt is unable to set my land as home as it's not group-owned, so when I TP my alt it often arrives invisible. However, if my alt then logs out and logs back in at previous location, it is usually fine.

So I'm thinking it may be something specific to teleport requests to high-up locations.
