For the open source devs and the technically inclined:

The crash is a null pointer dereference in idle_startup() in llstartup.cpp. Based on these log lines from a crash report I believe it is happening in STATE_LOGIN_AUTHENTICATE (6) with sAuthUris being empty but trying to access element 0 of the vector.

2007-10-19T19:43:30Z INFO: init_start_screen: Loading startup bitmap...
2007-10-19T19:43:30Z INFO: LLStartUp::setStartupState: Startup state changing from 3 to 5
2007-10-19T19:43:30Z INFO: LLAres::rewriteURI: Rewriting https://login.agni.lindenlab.com/cgi-bin/login.cgi
2007-10-19T19:43:35Z INFO: LLStartUp::setStartupState: Startup state changing from 5 to 6

During a "normal" login, there is a line with "rewriteResult: [0]" printed:

2007-10-19T22:56:47Z INFO: LLStartUp::setStartupState: Startup state changing from 3 to 5
2007-10-19T22:56:47Z INFO: LLAres::rewriteURI: Rewriting https://login.agni.lindenlab.com/cgi-bin/login.cgi
2007-10-19T22:56:47Z INFO: Responder::rewriteResult: [0] https://login.agni.lindenlab.com/cgi-bin/login.cgi
2007-10-19T22:56:47Z INFO: LLStartUp::setStartupState: Startup state changing from 5 to 6

During the login of people who crash, however, there is nothing printed by llsrv.cpp Responder::rewriteResult, which makes me think that gLoginURIs is empty.

Could this be a network config issue causing ares/SRV lookup to fail?

Laptop, Core Duo 2Ghz - 2 Go Ram - Nvidia GeForce GO 7300 - Windows XP SP2 - Norton 360 1.2.1.6

ADSL at home, Livebox Orange (ISP, France) Inventel v5.10, 6 Mb/s max 4 Mb/s real, switch PLC on Ethernet plug

The viewer crashes after the message "Verifying cache files" and comes to the Second Life Crash Logger window, even after having cleared the cache files (6 attempts). The previous RC viewer worked properly and so does the normal viewer. I sent the crash report.

Hope you have enough details. Thanks !

well theres a lot more defects than what this is about so you might just make a blanket borked RC release jira entry instead so everyone can see how bad it really is.
Teleporting: camera/client view stays in the location your in while your avatar is sent to the location you teleported to.
editing linked prim textures: horizontal and vertical repeats are linked together. can't change one without the other changing to the same value.

Thank you very much for the Lag-Meter!!!!
It says:

  • My framerate is below 10... (yes,. I know), because "Too many complex objects in scene": it's only me!!
  • Ping Time is sometimes 250-600 ms (cause: "bad connection or file-sharing apps"): no file share. I'll check the conection, but I think it is because I enter this text here in the browser?

I have a dual boot system with vista 64 bit aned xp home. SL runs much more stable with vista. Especially when using the RC viewer. XP crashes about every 15 minutes, vista sometimes 3-4 hours with no crashes. Current viewer crashes noticbly more than RC version.

Your operating system: WinXP SP2
Your network configuration: Home - Active Armor (XP), nvFirewall (med setting), and my router's built in firewall. (yes all three running).
The name of your Internet service provider (ISP): RoadRunner
The type of router you have: D-Link DI-524 Wireless.
GPU: 2 nVida 7600GS 126M (256M total) cards in SLI FullScreen 1440x900 75Hz
CPU: Intel D Dual Core @ 3.20GHz
RAM: 3 Gigs DDR2
MoBo: ECS nForce 570 SLIT-A

No crashes, during my time on last night.

Issues I noticed last night as I was logged on, but not necessarily attributed to the new release candidate:

1) slower rez times when moving from sim to sim, especially when using a TP/LM

2) unable at times to make a single long jump, had to intermediate jumps to get to my final destination

3) have been having to manually rebake to get clothes to show properly (new with this release candidate)

Nothing else comes to mind.

Ok. I get an invariable crash on starting up, which occurs at the 'Logging In' phase. The progress bar goes through the Verifying Cache correctly, but as soon as it hits 'Logging In' there is an instant crash to desktop.

Operating System: Windows XP, SP 2
Network Configuration: Two computers accessing the connection, this one being the main one. Firewall in the modem/router and also one on my virus checker (PcCillin).
ISP: PlusNet
Type of router: D-Link DSL-504T

I have 2Gb RAM, and my video card is the Nvidia 6800GS, Gold Edition

On some Linux systems (At least mine that runs KDE) you need to press ctrl-SHIFT-alt D to get around other internal commands. That should be added too as a hint.

OK another report, actually a good one (I hopes that it can help tracking down the issue)

On my main system it runs fine right now.
OS: Debianbased SL Live Knoppix CD, hard disk installed (Linux)
Network: ADSL, small local provider in sweden. U/D ca 768k/4M (They use a dedicated radio link for a jump at one place)
Network config: Netgear firewall and router, all necessary ports forwarded to the computer. Fixed IP's internally

Computer specs: 1,6 GHz P4, 768M ram. Nvidia Gforce 4 (of all old cards!)

FPS at mid day around 4-5 (Usually stays between 3-6 depending on network load in the country and SIM carachteristics.)
Btw. FPS was much higher back at old 1.17 branch with exactly the same hardware. (The computer is dedicated to SL and runs only that).

Finally, the RC login spash screen works compared to the 1.18.5.3 final release that don't. LOL

Release Candidate issues my arse!

I don't use RC versions, not after the last time something like this happened. But I'm getting the damndest collection of errors, handshake failures, login failures, packet not received, DNS errors, you name it - I got it.! AND every time, immediately after the error, I get logged out. Ah well, I suppose that's a handy way of avoiding yet another 'session terminated improperly' statistic?

I'm using 1.18.2(1), with no intention of changing until there's a mandatory release - I'm fed up with crap releases. Between them and crap server updates you don't know where you are with SL any more.

So, less of the 'it's the latest RC' rubbish. It isn't. As usual, it's the useless grid.

Oh, and it's XP SP2, 3ghz Core2Duo, nVidia 8800 Ultra, 2 Gig Ram. Netgear DG834N running wireless (don't even THINK about it - it's been running like this for months with no problems except Level 3, which is normal for them, and LL screwups - which are also normal for them...) connected to an 8mbps ADSL that runs at 5.5-6mbps

And so, another SL-less day...

Could someone please give us some sort of update or status report on this? I haven't been able to log on with my laptop since Friday, and it's getting a little ridiculous. This is far too long for a problem of this magnitude to be going on, and all I see are more reports and no responses. I might be a little more patient if we were at least being kept up to date on what steps are being taken to fix the problem, any causes that have been ruled out, and any progress made. It's very much interfereing with my use and enjoyment of SL by limiting when I can access it!

I am also crashing...
  • Your operating system WIN XP SP2
  • Your network configuration - at home on
  • The name of your Internet service provider - AT&T DSL
  • The type of router you have - Linksys wireless router

Most of the time it will crash when the camera view has to move through a wall. This will cause the program to freeze.
There also have been times where I can just be sitting and the program just disappears.
Help!

Hubby has noticed a problem running the new RC only under one condition:
  • Having the newly updated Havoc4 Beta installed

He was running the RC just find until he did so, and while it was installed, the new RC wouldn't run for ****. Once he UN-installed the new Beta, the RC ran just fine again.

I can not access anything, nor get into the "in world". I am new to this and I'm getting extremely frustrated. Is there anyone who can help?

I have crashed every time I've logged in since 19 October using either Candidate Release 1-18-4 or Regular Release 1-16-0-6. The avatar never completely renders and can only either spin in place or walk forever through the bottom of the universe. I have tried several tricks such as clearing the network cache and switching off the Avatar Vertex Program. Nothing seems to work. I have run several bandwidth tests through Toaster.com and have consistently had throughput of 1.5 to 5 Mbs.

Downloaded and ran the 26 October release of 1.18.4 and still no joy. Same symptoms as before; avatar does not fully render, avatar crashes almost immediately. Can only spin or walk off into infinity. Bandwidth and Packet Loss meters zero out almost immediately.

Crashing on login, at Alien Museum in New Brazil. 1.18.4(2) no longer has the option of logging on to specific locations, so it's difficult. Windows XP, aging system.

Not really a crash per se, but certainly issues with logging in at all until dumping cache.

If I have not dumped cache and I login, my spawnpoint is at (10,10,10) on any region I happen to login to including my home location. Camera view starts under the region, in the water and I can gradually see terrain rezzing overhead. Linden Dollar totals do not load. Friends list DOES load and Instant messages both from groups and individuals reach me during this login delay, I can navigate between IM windows at this time but my responses are sent without my resident name being sent along with my text. Apparently nothing goes through as no one responds to my replies. Any scripted attachments I may be wearing register very slowly at this time.

Sometimes with a bit of patience, I am able to login and everything loads in a furious rage: prim, textures, particles, all fighting and blurring their way into focus.Other times it appears there is no hope of breaking through this barrier so I clear cache and login again.

This also affects logging in with the current release. If I abandon a failed RC login and attempt to fire up 1.18.3 (5) it is also now affected. BUT, if I clear cache and login with 1.18.3 (5) and log out again, I can log in effortlessly as long as I once again login with 1.18.3 (5). I cannot login with the RC at all until I clear cache first.

While clearing my cache each and every time is a workaround, it is a real pain to have to reload inventory each time. Especially if I am logged out of a region or crash while building and texturing.

Had problems installing - kept getting file errors. Uninstalled and redownloaded and reinstalled, got same problems. Tried 'ignore' on file problems which let me log in but kept crashing. Immediate crash if I tried to look at land settings.

Have now uninstalled and gone back to 1.18.3 (5) and operating without problems.

We thought this was fixed earlier but to those of you still crashing at startup and new commenters here – in addition to Stephany's request for info above, can you please confirm you're using the newest main (not Release Candidate) viewer, 1.18.4(3)? And also mention if you have the same problems with 1.18.3(5) (as Liz Ferlinghetti seems to have tried)? Further helpful details are appreciated.

Drea Nightfire added a comment - 11/Nov/07 08:11 AM
I can confirm that I am using the latest main release: 1.18.4(3)

As previous users have mentioned, I crash upon startup after the cache files message.

Here are my system specs:
Sony Vaio VGN-FZ240E
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 6.0.6
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7250 @ 2.00GHz, 2001 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)

I also use the newest main release, and I am experiencing the same problem.

My computer has an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ processor (about 2 GHz) with 256 MB memory and enough hard disk space.
Graphics card: ATI Radeon 9200

  • Your operating system (Mac, PC, etc.)
Desktop PC with Windows XP Professional SP2 and all recent updates
    Firewall: ZoneAlarm 7.0.362
Antivirus: Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic 7.06.00
Some mouseware and printer recognition software etc. is running, but the problem occurs even if all those programs are terminated.
  • Your network configuration (at work or at home, behind a firewall or not, wireless or not)
    LAN connection to the modem.
Network card drivers reinstalled recently; works fine.
For that LAN connection, a fixed IP address has been assigned manually.
Problem occurs even if all firewalls are shut off.
  • The name of your Internet service provider (ISP)
    HanseNet Alice (Germany)
    4,000 kbit/s connection
  • The type of router you have
    Sphairon Turbolink IAD
