Description  « Hide
I know there are a lot of comments, that's why I edited the description.

Before someone re-opens this again, check this:

  • You are using a viewer 1.20 Release Candidate or higher
  • You tried to re-bake (Advanced Menu>Character>Rebake textures or press , ctrl+alt+r on PC, cmd+opt+r on MAC, I believe) and this does not fix the problem.

Also, your dissappeared skirt must be a system-skirt, not a prim-skirt.
Wanja Lubitsch
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another easier method which works more reliably and even for no mod skirts (in 1.19) is to:

1) Take off all your HUDs
2) Wear the skirt
3) Rebake textures (press ctrl-alt-r or look in the advanced -> Character ->rebake menu item at the top of your screen if you don't see the avanced menu press ctrl-alt-shift-d)
4) Reattach HUDs

Keep in mind this should be fixed in 1.20 if you still have system skirt issues even after rebaking with RC 1.20 then be sure to report that as soon as possible.
========-

(OLD) REPRO from Mick Linden (try this in WindLight):

This issue occurs with many existing system skirts, although does not seem to affect new skirts created in inventory.

Repro:

1) Wear a system skirt, such as Asset ID: 64fc29a1-b205-00d2-4ae1-fd507030e948

Observe, the skirt texture will appear for a second or 2 and then turn entirely invisible. The skirt is still shown as being 'worn' in inventory.

2) Right-click yourself and go into appearance, or select the worn skirt in inventory and select 'edit'

Observe the skirt appears correctly in the preview panes of the appearance edit menu.

3) Click 'Close'

Observe the skirt disappears again when you exit the appearance menu.

4) Right-click yourself and go into appearance, or select the worn skirt in inventory and select 'edit' again

5) Select the 'Skirt' tab and adjust a slider. (e.g. length)

Observe the skirt disappears from your avatar.

6) Select 'Save and 'Close'

Observe the skirt now appears correctly on your avatar.

7) Unwear and wear the skirt several times.

Observe the skirt now appears on your avatar when worn in most cases without disappearing.

========-

There seems to be a problem with system skirts disappearing. I have not personally seen it, but people tell me of a lady suddenly without her skirt. I see it fine, but to the other person it is as if she took it off. It must be affecting some video cards and not others. Is anyone else hearing/seeing this? The skirt is still worn, and the asset is still intact, just not visible to some people. And it appears to be random, two ladies wearing the same skirt one will loose their skirt then it will be back again, then the second lady will loose hers while the first is still visable. As I said I haven't seen this personally just hearing about it a lot and I don't see it here in the tracker hence this submission.

Definitely seeing this on my own avatar. Interestingly enough the skirts will show when in appearance mode but promptly disappear upon exit. Also, when the textures are still loading the skirt appears and then disappears when it is fully loaded.

I forgot to add that clearing network cache etc. appears to have no effect. Didn't see this behavior at all until Windlight viewer was installed.

I just had it with the Windlight: No skirt, except in appearance mode.
I re-logged with 1.18.4 (3) without changing my clothes, and the skirt is back.
The I tried 1.18.5 (0) Nov 13 2007 10:25:05 (Second Life Release Candidate), and I wear the skirt.

S it is only the windlight where I don't wear a skirt. I asked other people if they can see my skirt and they denied, but they did not have the windlight viewer running.
How weird is that?

If this would affect a mandatory viewer, I would classify it as a show-stopper.

Lyssa Varun added a comment - 15/Nov/07 07:33 PM
I also saw this problem propogate to the other releases, windlight, rc, normal viewers, on the same skirt.

Another item of note is that the skirt in question is modify and in edit appearance mode it doesn't show the texture box.

I tried all three Avatar Rendering options in the graphics detail preferences, no effect.

I tried editing skirt parameters and saving, length, poofy, etc., no effect.

I tried changing color from white to the light grey from the palette and saved in normal viewer and after saving and closing appearance mode the skirt then didn't vanish. I entered edit appearance mode again and set the color back to white, saved and closed appearance mode and the skirt once again didn't vanish.

Still in edit mode there is no texture selection box for this skirt.

Confirmed also that other avatars can see the skirt now too.

Lyssa Varun added a comment - 15/Nov/07 07:36 PM
Oh, also, one of the no-modify skirts I have that's doing this is still showing only in appearance mode and of course I can't perform the steps listed above since it's no mod. Is this some sort of inventory corruption?

I am experiencing the same problem with WindLight. The skirt on my avatar just disappeared, and when I went to edit it, I couldn't see it any longer.

I was able to make a new skirt, but when I tried to alter it it disappeared as well. This is rather frustrating!

Other avatars could not see me with a skirt on either.

I was thankfully able to get back into the normal client and "re-bake" the texture, but this is frustrating! Fortunately, I was not wearing a "No Modify" skirt.

I really like the look of Windlight, but not at the expense of my Avatar's skirts!

A friend and I got the same outfit in different colors Saturday to wear to an event Sunday. We took pictures Sunday morning after relogging, then logged out. Later, I changed for a different event, then changed back for the event Sunday evening. On the way to the event I experienced the a TP crash, then after logging back in...

On my Windlight viewer I could see her skirt but not mine. She could however, see mine on her old viewer. Taking it off and putting it back on did not make it reappear to me unfortunately.

I checked around and Mick Linden in QA noticed this bug too – I've edited this issue because it appears to originate in WindLight, but as noted, propagates to other viewers after the problem has already happened. Can anyone actually cause the system skirt to disappear in another version?

In any case, I'll ask for further info...

I've had 2 customers complain that their skirt actually changed color from white to brown. The skirt is no mod, and it's actually 2 different skirts that were created completely separate from each other. There's no way that the customer could have done this themselves. I'm asking them to check their versions of the viewers.

Doris Haller added a comment - 19/Nov/07 01:38 PM
I tried this, since I knew about this bug, in the current release candidate (not windlight):
  • I copied the skirt
  • I got dressed. everything was visible. Fine.
  • I teleported and the skirt dissapeared
  • I put on the copy, but it is invisible too!

Damn, my nice skirt!!

This is a very nasty bug!!

The listed workaround works fine for skirts if you have permissions to modify them, but for those you do not have permissions to modify, I've found the following works just as well.

Go into edit appearance
Goto the skirt tab
Remove the skirt (don't close Edit Appearance)
Wear the skirt again
Now close Edit appearance

If you do it this way, the skirt tends to not disappear. On the other hand, every time I try to wear it without being in Editing Appearance mode, the skirt will vanish except for a funky little oval on my left leg. I hope this workaround helps someone.

Mavromichali Szondi added a comment - 20/Nov/07 02:26 PM
The bottom half of my men's coat disappeared today. It only fixed when i adjusted the flounciness up and down a few times. It still tends to disappear again after TPs. As stated, the fix only works on mod items, and it's very random as to when ot works or not. Most annoying as it ruins the outfit to only wear half a coat. Just glad I'm not a lady: I'd end up indecently exposed in my bloomers.

emeraldever cline added a comment - 20/Nov/07 03:16 PM
I tried recreating one of my mermaid tails (skirt)...and it stayed on for a while...until I had to TP to someone's business and got there half-naked! So embarrassing...

I tried returning to the old client, and now I have the problem there too...like ya'll have mentioned.

The skirt is a vital part of my business.

Just noticed an interesting effect. I had two skirts disappearing, one with mod permissions, one without. Using 1.18.5 RC1 viewer, I tried to use above workaround. It was sufficient to move the top skirt slider to 0 and back to 100 and then exit appearance mode, the skirt was visible again.

After that, I wore the no-mod skirt and it was visible too! Looks like fixing one skirt also fixed the other. Can anyone confirm this observation, or was it just a coincidence? If not it is a nice way for making no-mod skirts reappear.

Shyft Sands added a comment - 22/Nov/07 06:28 AM
This happens with almost all of my skirts. I found them to reappear after rebaking textures (Cmd+Alt+R on a Mac). Though I can't really say if others can see them fine, I'm suspecting they can, because if not, at least my friends would have dropped a note or something about me looking a little undressed.

Cerulean Capalini added a comment - 25/Nov/07 06:06 AM
I have found that, sometimes but not always, rebaking my character 5 or 6 times has finally made my skirt appear. I have had the exact same issues with teleporting with a skirt to have it not appear on when I arrive at my destination. For me, going into appearance makes the skirt appear ONLY in appearance mode (not when I go out of this view). I have also found that trying to edit a skirt with mod. permissions makes the skirt disappear off of my body while in this mode.

I've been seeing something similar happen to system eyes now except they go black and this effect also persists inside the other clients. Can't fix no mod versions that are corrupted like this but mod versions are corrected by changing lightness, saving, changing lightness back and saving again. Rebaking for this or the skirt issue has not worked for me under windows. I'll check for a copy/xfer skirt to send.

Torley Linden added a comment - 06/Dec/07 12:51 AM
I got some skirts, thanks to those who sent them to me – but some of us Lindens couldn't repro this; I wonder if new instances happen under WindLight 1.18.5 (74965) or newer.

If you can still make system skirts invisible in the newest WindLight, please post your info here, and paste your system details from Help menu > About Second Life too.

Maghnus Balogh added a comment - 06/Dec/07 01:26 AM
I'm still getting this practically every other time I login. Note the workaround seems to still work for me, though. If I remove the skirt, then go into Editing Appearance mode and equip it again, then when I close Editing Appearance it will usually become visible. I also tested all of my non-prim skirts and most of them seem to disappear after a second or two.

I am still having issues with this as well. I will put on a skirt & within a min. it will become invisible. Haven't been able to wear a regular skirt at all in Windlight.

I posted a picture to add to it for you as well. If I put a skirt on it will disappear almost instantly. I can go into edit appearance & see it. As soon as I go out of this view it disappears again. Rebaking does nothing to help this issue.

Thanks for the idea of putting it on in appearance mode. So far that has seemed to work to keep the skirt on (after testing a few times by teleporting)

The following clarification would also be appreciated:

If you see this problem on the main viewer, can you please also confirm whether you can REPRODUCE (make this problem happen using a previously-OK skirt) this problem in the main viewer? Or do the "missing skirts" just "carry over" to the main viewer AFTER this specifically happens in WindLight? (Which may be expected behavior, because of the way textures are "baked" onto your avatars.)

I also suggest the following test: if you have a skirt go missing in WindLight, login to the main (NON-WindLight) viewer and go to Client menu (Ctrl-Alt-D on PC, Opt-Ctrl-D on Mac) > Character > Rebake Textures and see if that makes a difference. Give it some time for textures to rez (go from fuzzy to sharp) again. If it works, then yes, other avatars should also see your skirt reappear too.

Please let us know.

Maghnus Balogh added a comment - 13/Dec/07 12:05 PM
I'm not seeing this on the main viewer, only WindLight. It also doens't always happen. I can login to a spot and my skirt might look fine. If I relog, there's a good chance that it'll be missing on my avatar whne I'm done rezzing. These skirts stay in the inventory, but go invisible. I've confirmed they're also invisible to others. Changing skirts can also make the new one turn invisible, and if you change back, the original one that previously worked fine might become invisible. On a couple of skirts, I've noticed that a small ugly circular patch forms after the skirt goes invisible, like the texture's being loaded wrong or something (I dunno that much about how textures are loaded). I'm using ForceWare 84.21, and I know that's really old, but I've tried every driver above that and they all cause some major problems in most of my 3D applications. My Help > About stats havent' changed since the last time I've posted. Rebaking within WindLight doesn't help. Going into Edit Appearance, then removing and wearing the skirt seems to help, though it may still seemingly randomly turn invisible if you teleport somewhere.

As I mentioned at the start, I don't see this at all in the main viewer, just WindLight. I have just confirmed this by wearing every skirt I sent you fine folks, and they all look fine. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but the skirt I was wearing when I logged out on the main viewer was visible and stayed visible when I logged into WindLight. In fact, several were. Then after changing a few skirts and waiting for each to rez cleary, the problem started up again, but if I change back to the ones that worked, they still seem to be working. Anyway, I'm sorry for the long comment. I tried to make this as detailed and thoroguh as possible because I really don't know what information is particularly helpful.

Torley Linden added a comment - 13/Dec/07 03:18 PM
@Maghnus: Thanks for following up – if you think it's worth the time, I really recommend you upgrade your drivers and try again, the 7300 GS isn't that old and we reasonably can't assure compatibility on older drivers.

I know this issue has gotten a lot of votes + comments but it seems strangely difficult to reproduce, so those you having this problem, PLEASE read all previous comments to understand this issue's history better, and PLEASE BE SURE to post your system info. Go to Help menu > About Second Life and copy-and-paste it in here.

Lyssa Varun added a comment - 15/Dec/07 10:26 AM
As I reported previously, when it happens it's always a carry over from skirts worn in WindLight that turn invisible when fully rezzed then they are also thereafter invisible in the main and RC clients as well. I currently have only one nm/nt skirt that's stuck this way.

Rebaking textures under any of the three clients does not fix it. The only way I've found to fix it is to edit the item in appearance mode, change the color, save, change it back and save again. This of course does not work for no modify skirts which is why I have one that's stuck this way.

I have been trying to get it to happen with other transferable skirts without any luck. Even after clearing cache it's odd because the skirt that does this appears when worn until it's fully rezzed then disappears but then also appears only in edit appearance mode in all viewers.

Maghnus Balogh added a comment - 18/Dec/07 07:36 AM
This must've somehow been related to one of the other bugs that was resolved with the recent release (possibly explaining why it wasn't reproduceable) because I'm still using the same drivers, but suddenly with release Second Life 1.18.6 (75762) Dec 13 2007 16:08:39 (Second Life WindLight) all (yes ALL) of the skirts that would sometimes disappear now rez properly and stay rezzed. Had I to make a guess, I'l say it was probably related to VWR-3162 or VWR-925 as both of those issues affected me as well and are now resolved.

Can anyone else confirm this is no longer an issue, because I absolutely can't reproduce it with this new release.

I've seen this before, and thought it was gone, but it's back. Texture rebake doesn't seem to help, but the work-around of putting the skirt on while in appearance mode does work, happily. It's a bit awkward to have one's skirt suddenly disappear while strolling with a gentleman ... Mom did say always wear nice underwear.

I apologize for saying I would post a picture when I did not. (Lost the picture somewhere in the vast sl picture archieve of my computer). I have been running into issues where I can go into appearance mode & put my skirt on but it doesn't work. It works most of the time but not always. I have also run into skirts sometimes staying on but 9 times out of 10 still disappearing (especially when teleporting. It will be on while teleporting & no longer be showing when reaching destination.). I have given into wearing pants for the most part until fixed.

Problem appears exactly as Mike Linden described in his repro. I've had some cases where it's invisible locally but visible to others, too. This affects males too since some suits use the skirt layer!

Still present in Second Life 1.18.6 (76453)

I was having this problem on my T60 laptop (ATI x1300), in the different versions of Windlight. I was also experiencing crashing fairly frequently. I was running the latest ATI video driver, and had turned all the settings down, with no improvement. The last change I made was to install the Omega ATI driver. The skirt problem has been resolved, and I have not had a crash for hours, when before I could not make it past 15 minutes.

Most of you may already know this. But this may help for a temp fix.

Open the Client menu (Ctrl-Alt-D, or Opt-Ctrl-D on a Mac) If you dont have it yet

Ctrl-Alt-R Rebake Textures OR if you want to use the menu> (Client->Character->Rebake Textures). This is a temp fix

I hope this helps, I use windlight to, and i have this issue from time to time.

Torley,

I sell a lot (about a thousand so far) of system-skirt based dresses.

My customers report their skirts vanishing when they are using Windlight, but so far I have observed no pattern to which skirts vanish and which do not. I doubt that you will learn much by collecting skirts.

This has been reported by less than one percent of customers. I have no idea what proportion of my customers are using Windlight, however, or how many are complaining to me about their problems.

I have had customers come to my store with vanished skirts. I can then create a new skirt, hand it to them, and it vanishes too. In fact, while the bug persists, all skirts vanish (both for them and anyone looking at them). I have found no cure except to dump Windlight: rebaking, cache clearance, etc. have no effect.

I'm sure you already have theories, but surely it must be that the avatar baking is at fault. The skirts vanish exactly when you'd expect to see the baked avatar textures replace the composited ones, and the skirts vanish for everyone looking at the affected avatar. Sorry if that's already obvious to you!

I don't log in very often any more, but I still encounter this bug (even if I said something else before).

I noticed that after the skirt disappeared, when I enter the appearance mode it is visible there and dissappears when I leave appearance mode (giving "appearance mode" a new meaning).

I also observed that if I put on the skirt while I am in appearance mode, it is invisible there and appears when I leave the appearance mode! It is like swapping the visibility, depending on the mode you're in when you put it on.

So I put on skirts in appearance mode. After that, they remain visible until I put them off.

Maybe you should search for the bug in the "put the skirt on"-routine. (and then move it into the "put the pants on"-routine, a lot of guys seems to like to run around without pants anyway..)

It seems in the latest Windlight (the first 1.19 edition) rebaking textures fixes this, for me at least. I've also noticed it's a lot easier to fix the issue, though you still have to enter appearance editor and close it, then take off and re-wear, but you don't have to make changes to the item, save, then change them back and re-save again first.

cmd+opt+R (to rebake) has fixed it several times for me since the last update. Though after teleporting, the skirt layer disappears again in most cases.

Mimika Oh added a comment - 12/Feb/08 08:17 AM
Hi Torley.

You write "Determined to not be WL-specific, removed version." This is big news and could affect my customer service. Could you explain how this was determined? Have you seen non-WindLight users with invisible skirts? Or is it just that you've logically eliminated the possibility by looking at the code?

So far all my customers with this problem have been WindLight users and switching back to the standard viewer has always fixed it. I would like to know if I am advising them wrongly.

Thank you!

This only has happened to me in Windlight. When switching from Windlight to the regular viewer it would happen once before logging out and relogging in the regular viewer. That would fix it. I have been using only the regular viewer to avoid the no skirts problem and i've not seen it once in the regular viewer alone.

I have had this problem for months. I had it before I ever installed Windlight, and have had it with every update since. It does it with ALL my system skirts. It does it in the regular viewer and in Windlight. It doesn't matter how many times I edit a skirt, or go into appearance, or rebake ..it always does it. Put a skirt on, see it for about 2-3 seconds, then POOF. Some of my friends will see it on me, but some don't. I never do. I won't even wear an outfit with one cuz I never know who I'm flashing my bare butt to on the grid. Here is my info..

As a workaround, I have found that the following "fix-it" steps are effective in restoring a skirt that is visible again.

https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Lum_Pfohl/Troubleshooting#Disappearing_Clothing

The idea is to change into a newbie avatar, complete with a shape change - such that you're wearing clothing that DO NOT disappear. You may have to have several tries at it. Once you're wearing an outfit that remains visible on your screen, clear your cache and relog. Then attempt to re-wear your "disappearing outfit," to see if your problem's gone away.

Since this was not a rendering issue and was determined to not be introduced in windlight, I did not look exceedingly deeply into it. It appears to be due to the fact we use an unreliable communication protocol to update clothing and rebaking and occurs at times of high packet loss. Fixing this may take awhile. Presently, the majority of viewer devs are working on lowering the crash rate first, then hitting these bugs. I wish it had been an easy rendering bug. We will get to it in the coming weeks.

Jaszon Maynard added a comment - 20/Mar/08 07:57 AM
>occurs at times of high packet loss.

This doesn't sound right to me at all. I wonder if the other people seeing this could check their packet loss and see if it sounds right to them. I get disappearing skirts ALL the time and I almost never have any packet loss, ever.

It occurs the minute I put a skirt on. It appears instantly when I go into Appearance mode, and disappears the minute I come out. I am definitely NOT coincidentally suddenly getting packet loss at precisely those times, every time.

I recently have this issue after buying a piece of clothing 2 weeks ago ( a toga - I don't normally wear skirts !).

From the comments here the common part seems to be the avatar. The problem displays the same symptoms on two machines I have ( details of the main one below), the symptoms are visible to others "in world" in addition to the subject. It's demonstrated on multiple versions and platforms. It occurs at any time whether the sim is busy or not. Certainly doesn't seem to be graphics related.
The only thing that appears to be common is the avatar and its a skirt ( OK one report of eyes)

I just managed to circumvent my problem using the technique of adding the skirt while in appearance. Didn't work the first time but did the second. After that all skirts, none of which displayed before, except for a second or two, now work.

For what its worth, and I'm not an SL programmer, it seems to me like there is a bit in the Avatar object that determines if a piece of clothing should be displayed and this has got out of sync. Like some code just flips it when other code sets it. This would have to be in addition to whatever bit defines if something is "Worn" in the inventory.
As for a communicaton problem - OK maybe the first occurance of the problem is when there is high utilisation and there's some sort of timing problem. But after that it seems to happen anywhere anytime.

If the problem comes back I'll try and make a better note of the circumstances and see if it can be repoduced

Many thanks
Lets hope we resolve it soon !

As windlight has now been added to the RC version of the client, I have started noticing this more and more. Usually the skirts load (eventually) but often they do not. I have had it happen with tails for my suit before and with a toga I recently wore. It seems to happen more with windlight as I never had this issue myself till windlight was added to RC.

I have had this problem for 2 days now and used the workaround mentioned in one of the comments. It has fixed the problem for me so far...for the last few minutes anyway.

1) Remove the (invisible) skirt via inventory "Take off"

2) Go into Appearance edit.

3) While in Appearance edit mouse-drag the skirt from inventory onto avatar. It remains visible.

4) Make a small change to enable the "save" button.

5) Close. The skirt remains visible on my avatar...on my system at least, and this fix has survived several relogs so far.

Whoever found this workaround. Thanks, it makes SL usable for me until a real fix is found.

100% reproducable, and I will happily demonstrate it for any Linden that can help fix this.

I put on the "Black leather skirt" by HoseQueen McLean, and it instantly vanishes. Rebaking the character makes it appear again, but only for an indeterminate length of time. If I take it off and put it back on again, it vanishes again. 100% reproducible, in any sim, even in a lag-free 700 M skybox where I am the only avatar in the class 5 sim. The exact same skirt works FINE for my main avatar, though she is having intermittent issues with other skirts that are harder to reproduce. This definitely looks like an asset corruption issue, and it became most frustratingly apparent with the last two client releases (the one that mainstreamed Windlight, and the one before that.

My inventory also has lost the ability to rez one tail, one prim skirt, and two kimono obi's. These four items user to work fine, and now I can neither attach them nor rez them on the ground. Copying them does not result in a functional one either.

I'm not on very much right now, because I can't wear most of my clothes! If a Linden wants to work with me on this, contact Ceera Murakami. She can get a message to me easily.

I need to add my voice to this. For me it only happened after installing the latest viewer. Now I darent wear skirts to tp or 'replace outfit' in public. Seriously no fun. If this doesnt get fixed pronto I'll be buying no more outfits in SL and any other spend ideas I may have had go belly up too. and I'll be spreading the word... stop spending!

Please allow me to add my two cents

As a manager of a fashion store that sells only bridals, formal, costume and casual dresses, this bug really can cause some headaches.

Now, we have replicated the problem - most of the time. We have a test laptop running Intel 935/940 graphics chipset, on Windows XP Professional platform. Using production (not RC) client. We have cleared the cache, uninstalled the client, restarted PC, reinstalled client. Removed all relevent folders during the process in Program Files and Application Data, etc.

Same symptom.

Two avatars. Logging in using same laptop. Wearing same outfit. One will have the skirt showing, the other one will have the invis skirt bug.

Most frustrating

Danielle Harrop added a comment - 07/Apr/08 04:08 PM
This started for me the afternoon (SLT) of April 7. Existing skirts with textures would not show up when worn straight from inventory. Going into appearance, and creating a new skirt would allow it to show until one of the sliders in appearance > skirt was moved, then the entire skirt would disappear from view. According to inventory, the skirt was still (worn) but not visible at all. This occurred with existing and new skirts, regardless of their textures. Also, retexturing or recoloring or both to a new or existing skirt didnt maintain the visual skirt. Clearing cash, or any number of "clicky-ritualistic girations" did not solf the problem. This needs to be fixed because it affects every person who wears a skirt layer...not just women. Many men's clothing use a skirt layer (tails on a tux) for part of the jacket. This changes what an AV can wear, and will have a very negative effect on clothes, clothes creators, and all participants in second life. Not all of us want to walk around in prim silks all day.

This started happening to me this morning. Very embarressing. This is on the newest veiwer and to top it off some of my skirts went missing as well. Of course this could be my fault since I don't even have a gfx card. (The motherboard is running it using pure grunt.)

I've tried rebaking, I've tried clearing the cache.

I'm installing a grunty card this w/end. We'll see if that solves the issue but I'm guessing from the other comments it seems to be either some sort of inventory corruption or server side issue.

Until then no access for me to non adult sections as I'm a bit, er, naked.

Torley, if you're ever online the same time as me feel free to drop an IM and I can show you what's happening.

I feel so terribly girlie posting this.... I mostly work in SL, but have a weakness for gowns.... i went to go to a "work" thing and tried on every gown in my inventory to find not a single skirt appearing.... finally got to the last one on the list and !!!! SKIRT!! put it on, teleported, and arrived in my undies..... sigh

Same thing,, it shows in edit mode, but not any other time....

I've tried the tricks above with no luck and appreciate any attention this can get

kit lacy added a comment - 09/Apr/08 09:54 AM
I think I might have a solution.

This worked for me 100% of the time.

Steps are as follows.

1. Wear skirt.

2. Goto Advanced Menu>Character>Rebake textures.

Wait. For me 50% of the time the front half of the skirt would appear.

3 Rebake again.

Wait. Again. 50% of the time the back half would reappear.

Eventually with a max of four rebakes the skirt would reappear.

Thanks to Chantelle Negulesco for her patience in watching me do this to 20 skirts

kit lacy added a comment - 10/Apr/08 12:32 AM
I should also point out that when a rebake resulted in only the front half of the skirt appearing on my screen Chantelle would about 80% of the time see the entire skirt.

Is the development team working on this issue? Just curious - not sure if the dev team has replicated the problem, pinpointed the possible culprits, and are looking for a solution.

Yes, I know that this is a not game crashing issue - but it does hinder a lot of commerce within the game.

This is happening to me too. Happened for the first time yesterday 10th March, though this is the first time I have worn a system skirt layer since upgrading to 1.19.1 (4). I have reproduced the repro from Mick Linden and also used the rebake work around suggested by Kit Lacy above, both work after several tries. This is still an issue because everytime I change to a different skirt I have to start all over again. PLUS going back to a previously fixed skirt results in the same invisibility. From an Linden's office hour yesterday - the 4 hours long one - Zen Linden claimed that the missing skirt is due to packet loss issue on the network and not much they can do. Strange thing is this has happened to me while on laptop with wireless and laptop on land line. And same machine, same wireless network connection - i can log in and see everything fine but when my friend logs in, she has issues. Then I log in again - everything's fine. She tried again - problem again.

Somehow I don't think it's network issue.

I was reading the transcript from Pastrami's recent office hours and I believe it was BigPapi Linden who indicated that this is a user side networking issue; basically, high packet loss equals invisible skirts. I'm wondering though, if this is the case, why did it only begin with the Windlight releases and why isn't affecting other clothing and textures? It seems unlikely that user network issues would target just skirts in this manner.

I posted it here already and its no solution for me that its a known bug.

No non prim skirt will show and some show as tops. Also some non prim trousers show as skins?

Yesterday my skirt didnt show, but showed a reflection of the tag my partner was wearing. I have tried the above solutions, but they only work if the skirt is editable. I have a large number of skirt outfits in my inventory, so this is absolutely annoying to say the least. It is only skirts, no other clothing items are affected by the invisible bug!

Having the same problem here. Along with all of the other ladies in my Geisha school SIM. We cannot get our non prim kimono skirts to rezz properly. They either rezz semi-transparent or not at all. They also tend to become mini-skirts.

Update: 6/15/08:
System skirts still not working for me. I've tried the 4 times rebaking technique and it's not working. Also, I've noticed that the transparent areas of my skirt tend to have chat from my text windows "adopted" as part of the texture. I don't know if that info will help anyone at Linden Labs, but I find it strange to see the words that my friends and I have said magically appear on parts of my semi-visible skirt.

sighs Geisha should not wear mini skirts by the way... LOL It's not very traditional. I've got about 30+ SL "kimono" that I cannot wear because they have system skirts. It's such a shame to see my poor avatar stuck wearing the same things over and over again, but I dare not charge any Lindens and buy anything new until this issue is resolved.

Alisha Ultsch added a comment - 13/Apr/08 04:01 PM

We are the paying members, for membership and "our"land. Beside this I am not so happy with SL the last couple of weeks. To many problems. They must test the new stuff very carefully before implant.
And Linden must realize that second life for many people is a second life. When they can not log in its as you are standing at RL for your font door without keys. I lost a lot of members the last weeks. Its everyday something else.

Rebake dont work either.
I have only 2 skirts which works right. All new clothes i get, dont work. Thats really not funny anymore.

I met a girl who said she have two accounts and with one account she have the skirt problem and with the other account not... the same system, but not the same problem!

I ran into this problem the first time a couple days ago and I have talked to several people since then with the same problem. I read through this thread last night and then did some tests this morning. Using the latest release candidate I put on the skirt I had problems with before and it rezzed fine. As I went into appearance it vanished momentarily then reappeared. However, it vanished again as soon as I tried to adjust any of the skirt settings. So things have improved but there is still a problem.

I then tried with the production viewer (Second Life 1.19.1 (4) Apr 2 2008 12:03:24 (Second Life Release)). I had no problems at all with the same skirt, even when making adjustments in appearance mode.

I didn't think to check packet loss when I was having this problem several days ago but the packet loss shown in my system info above is typical for me. That was taken a few minutes after the skirt vanished while adjusting in appearance mode. ATTENTION LINDENS...THE SKIRT VANISHED AND IT SHOWS 0 PACKETS LOST.

I also noticed a comment here about attachments and other objects failing to rez with no error message. I am not sure if this is related or not but I recently started a thread on that issue - SVC-2129

Just ran into another invisible skirt. No Mod. It went invisible as soon as it fully rezzed. So I used the work around I read here. Took the skirt off - went to appearance - put the skirt on. That seems to have permanently fixed the skirt. Again...here is my packet loss a few minutes after this - Packets Lost: 1/128131 (0.0%). That one packet was lost when I first logged in. So there was no packet loss in this incident at all. Zero, silch, zip, nada, none!

Edit: Oops...spoke too soon...the fix wasn't permanent. Next time I logged in the skirt was invisible again

I would add that (contrary to Mick Linden's observation) this does indeed happen with new skirts created in inventory. I can make a plain black skirt, shorten the length, save, come out of appearance mode. Result: the skirt turns semi-transparent and is full length.

I have had more than a dozen customers contact me with this problem. I have tried on different designers skirts and the same result occurs. The 'fix' that is described by Mike Linden above does nothing to create the skirt in its true form. As Pansy Peccable explains above, the skirt turns semi-transparent. I do not see this issue being addressed in the blog for the restarts, wondering when it will be addressed since this is a system skirt error.

this bug started for my main membership avatar about three weeks ago..
My alt also has the same issue.
the bug manifests itself in the following way.

1. All skirts in the inventory behave the same way.

2. Skirts can be made to re-appear temporarily by putting the avatar into "appearance"

3. I restored an alt account recently and the first time it wore a skirt the skirt was visible .
However after changing the item for a different inventory skirt skirts became invisible.

there appears to be 2 circumstances in which a skirt may be visiblt

1 In Appearance
2 When an account is restored

I am currently getting about 1 report of this issue every other day on average because I design Men's and Women's Clothing.

I use "Skirts" as a "Jacket Base" on Sport Coats ect. And use regular SL Skirts on many of my Women's Fashions.

I'm very glad that this has been escalated to critical status, Because it seems the problem is being reported more frequently.

My resolution most of the time is to create a brand new texture with much lower quality resolution on it... Sometimes, This doesn't make a difference. The Skirts will show up for a few seconds... Then Vanish as listed above in this Thread.

I almost "Always" use an Alpha Channel in all of my designs. "Alpha Channels" are used to cut out pieces of texture in order to show through the layer below or make parts of the design "Invisible" This is used in Custom Skirt Slits, Lace and Open Jacket or Shirts.

Could this have something to do with the way the SL viewer is trying to render the Texture with an Alpha Channel? Is it just making the entire skirt invisible because of a rendering problem?

Does anyone know if they are having this problem with a Standard Non .TGA Texture? LIke a .Jpg?

If you go to any texture on a prim and drop it to repeats of Zero on the texture tab using an alpha channel texture... That Prim will disappear sometimes.

Senga Tsarchon added a comment - 19/Apr/08 11:21 PM
Before the disappearing skirt phenomenon first occurred on my personal planet, I noticed that many skirts were transparent when they shouldn't be, to the point that makers often include "glitch pants" with skirts.

Could this be related to the current problem?

Someone told me to try to solve the problem with download this viewer http://nicholaz-beresford.blogspot.com/2008/04/release-eye-candy-ec-e.html
I have done this cause i hope to find a solution for this skirt problem. After this i wear a skirt and it dont reez normal but its not transparent anymore... now i can see the right texture. Not a solution but maybe a step on the right way.
This is how the skirt looks now:

------------------------

No. As I reported above, it happens with plain, newly created skirts with no texture at all! So it is not alpha channel corruption related.

Here's a question... I've tried working with this issue for a few NEW users - like, less than 3 month old users - who can't seem to get away with this problem, not just with skirts, but with shirts as well.

Most of the older users (year+) I know don't have this problem.

Could someone see if this is an issue more with age of account? Perhaps a corruption in data cluster for newer accounts? (Damned if I know how all that works, but hey, just tossing that out there...)

zeta vandyke added a comment - 21/Apr/08 08:50 AM
I never had this problem until last night. I got the latest update, installed it and when i logged in there it was.
  • Bought new dresses, skirt went invisible
  • Put on old skirts that never had any proble, skirt went invisible
  • Created a new skirt myself, no problem

To see if it was account based, i logged in on a brand new account, same problem. With one skirt though it suddenly apeared after 2 tries, but only on my own screen, my friend who was with me still didnt see it.

My original account is just over a year, the newly created one just over a week. There has been no PC software or driver updates or changes other than the new SL update.

I'm getting the above problems. But nothing, and I do mean NOTHIGN anybody suggests, none of the work arounds, NOTHING works to fix it.

It just gets worse and worse and worse.

And after a WEEK of trying to get help, and trying to get it fixed, I give up. Unless SOMEONE can fix this, I'm not going to even bother with SL.

I'm sorry but a bug that bad that totally undermines the entire POINT of my character (I play a crossdresser who prefers skirts okay? SKIRTS. I'm not being forced to wear jeans the whole time in world.), ruins the point, and ALL the fun I was having in the game.

It's just not worth my time, or my sanity, to play a game that's broken.

[edit]: Right, after a sleep, and one LAST try at this thing, I found a solution that worked perfectly for me.

Go get the pre windlight build of SL. Then download the Nicholaz edition Bleeding Edge viewer. Run it, and rebake the textures, then change your outfits.

Use that instead. You add Windlight, and it IMMEDIATELY breaks your skirts again.

You have to suffer with a worse framerate, and some dodgy physics, but at least it bloody works. .

I'm going to be sticking with this client until Linden fix Windlight.

Sorry this won't be anything new, just another confirmation of the problem. For me, this started happening at the infamous 1.19.1 upgrade that created all the furor a few weeks ago. (Perhaps that's significant.) I've upgraded all the drivers, tweaked the graphics, rebaked the textures an all that. Note that this ALSO happens, exactly the same way on a laptop with much more basic graphics (but still 2GB of RAM); it also started happening at that same software upgrade.
I think, like everyone else, this applies only to texture skirts; other clothing and any attachments (including attached skirts) are fine.
This is making my modeling job really tough!

I don't think this is video card or system related. I didn't have the problem at all, while using the WindLight First Look clients, or the 1.19.1.4 released client.

The problem started happening to me last night while using the 1.20.2 Release Candidate viewer, and it now happens when using 1.19.1.4 as well. I think something in the viewer is interacting with something server-side.

I don't have a lot of technical background but what I do know is that I work really hard all week and yesterday evening I came home to sit down to a great night of SL had lots of invites several things to do and was ready went to get dressed and blam no skirts for most of my outfits.I play SL for relaxation from a hard days work and this is quite disappointing and frustrating for me especially when I spend the money I do on clothes.I got into this game searching for fashion games clothes are my passion and its not very relaxing for me when I'm stressing about an issue like this and I cant get to an event. The work arounds are great advice I will try them but for the money I spend I should not have to do this.I want to dress my av and go dancing chatting and flirting thats what I play for.I am going to search some other games of this type I really want to play SL but there are so many issues and this one is a real pain and apparantly been one for awhile. It must be fixable why isn't it fixed hire extra people to work on this specific problem.Anyway obviously I have the vanishing skirt problem as well.TY for letting me vent now do something about it please

I now am seeing this problem on skirts that have been newly added to my inventory. Outfit was purchased on 4/25/08 and I'm using the 1.20.4 RC viewer. The above mentioned fixes of editing the skirt (not mod, in this case) or editing appearance have no effect. The skirt does show if I am editing my appearance, but after I save and close it out, the skiret disappears again.

I have only just started with this issue.
But i found as previously mentioned:
1.Go into Edit Appearance.
2.Drag the skirt from your INV onto your AV
3.Try make a small change in edit to get the SAVE tab.
4.Save and close

This has worked for me every time.

My only problem now is clothing saying missing from DATABASE. I have now lost alot of outfits. After almost 2 years on here It has now cost me L$ thousands.

Here are a couple possible workarounds for this issue, which also affects men's jackets. (Thanks you Wyn Nitely and Jessie Gervasi for the tips!)

Method #1:

Edit appearance, choose "Skirt" and then click on the "Color/Tint" box (it should be white). A window will open and you can choose a different color... click on the little black box in one of the rows of colors at the bottom and click "Select. Then repeat this step, changing the color back to white. Then click "Save." This should fix it, although if it doesn't, try taking the skirt off and putting it back on.

I've also heard that modifying the length of the skirt and then putting it back to the original setting works sometimes. And I have heard that sometimes, you need to try doing this a few times for it to "take."

Method #2:

Teleport to a different sim from where you first put on the skirt, the first time you noticed the problem. Then rebake your textures (ctrl-alt-R). Then edit appearance, and come out of it. This has helped some people also.

Please note in these two images (Skirt_Problem_00[12].bmp.jpg) that the floating spots just over the rear of the AV are not prims, but seem to be part of the full skirt that only appears when the AV is in Edit Appearance mode (the second screenshot. What this means - not really certain. Could a mask for another layer be being inappropriately used?

I think I found a work around...

When that happens, take off the skirt, go into Edit Apparence mode, wear the skirt, play with the camera controls, and close the Edit Appearance mode.

Seems to work every time for me.

I wanted to add this comment to echo one I read further up- this happens in circumstances when my stats window thing reports ping under 200 and 0.0% packet loss. I just use the RC client. I can post computer details if needed, but it happens on both my Windows and my Mac laptops.

This appears to be a known bug in the Windlight viewer(s) and released anyway, based on the dates of the orignal issue reports.

I have fixed all of my affected skirts by using the Nicholaz viewer Be-V which is based on old SL Viewer 1.18.5.3. Wear the skirt, go into Edit Appearance mode, exit Edit Appearance. It may be necessary to do this a couple of times.

Then stop using Windlight.

Nanci Barthelmess added a comment - 30/Apr/08 06:20 AM
Looks like a good workaround, Pansy, but there's one problem. The Nicholaz viewer is Windows specific, which means I can't run it under Linux (there's no way in hell I'm running something as resource intensive as SL under Wine when there's a native viewer, bugs or no bugs), and I suspect the Mac users are as out of luck as Linux users are.

I'm really surprised this wasn't a blocker for Windlight, and it seems odd that they still can't get the damned thing fixed yet.

Christi Maeterlinck added a comment - 30/Apr/08 09:31 AM

Anyway, can I just add my own request that thi ghastly bug be fixed soon?
Going into and out of appearance doesnt work for me, Pansy
And the bug is there in the regular viewer as well as the development viewer

Nanci Barthelmess added a comment - 30/Apr/08 09:38 AM - edited
Good to hear, Christi. I wasn't aware there had been a Mac version of the Nicholaz. I do know that there was a third-party port of the Nicholaz viewer to Linux a while back but it rather quickly got obsoleted and I hadn't seen new Linux versions available. As a Linux user that's the one I'm more concerned about.

But you're right, we need to get this thing fixed pronto, if not sooner.

since i started using this, all my dresses go invisible... sometimes rebaking a few times and taking it on and off will fix it, sometimes not. This isn't a bug we can work around client side, as even if we see out own skirts, other people will not see them.. and thats very embarrassing. ok here is an odd thing...

I removed my ~/Library/Application Support/SecondLife folder, and ran the release version of SL again. The dress i was wearing upon log out and log in was still invisible. Every other dress (i have many) i put on after that came on just fine without going invisible. One time into change appearance and back out with the invis dress back on and now it works fine. All of them are currently drawing fine on my computer.

I quit the release and went back to running RC4. The dress i had left on at log out, was showing fine upon re-logging back in. I tried to change dresses to same as i just ran in the Release, and most all of them worked right away. One of them flashed invisible for a second, but a second later reappeared and worked fine. The rest all went on and i could see them. Ddint matter of i switched dresses, or took one off and put the other one on. I then teleported to a new place, and the skirt i was wearing during the teleport promptly vanished after i landed. I switched skirts around a few more times and then only about three quarters of the skirts worked, many were invisible, ones that had just worked before i teleported...

I then switched to another set of dresses, an d not a single one stayed on. Sometimes switching between them for a second I saw the old one flash up and the new one flash up, then invisible again. This whole time i never registered any packet loss.

I switched back to the release version of SL. Some of the skirts that were invisible in the RC were still invisible, but they were all fixed with a rebake. In the release version, as long as i havent used the dress in the RC, it seems to be fine.

Whatever is causing this bug has somehow gotten worse with the RC is all I can think of. As long as i stay away from the RC its not effecting me.... though somehow the RC stuff bleeds into the release version. maybe the common cache folder?

An answer (not the be all and end all solution that defines and addresses the cause - but a solution for the immediate problem at hand)! Woot, Torley's video tutorial on rebaking texures has saved the day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKRnn9grSEY). Yay Torley. The man is an absolute champion.
  • Get your advanced menu up (I generally have mine permanently visible) - CTRL + ALT + D (pc) / Option + CTRL + D (mac)
  • Select character from the advanced menu
  • Select 'rebake texures' from the sub menu under 'character'
  • Your clothes should be back as they are meant to be.

I can wear skirts and dresses again no problem. Sometimes I have to try rebake a few times before the skirt appears again but I have teleported without losing the 'fix' since doing this - and logged out and back in. Some skirts need a rebake again when I take them off and put them back on but most are fine once I've got them working again. Prior to this I tried clearing cache, editing/resaving skirts in appearance mode, totally removing SL and reinstalling... banging my head against the table... I'm deliriously happy to have my skirts and dresses back again.

7 May 2008 update- Doh! teleported the other night and ended up bearing my knickers to the world (well, part of it anyway - fortunately there were not many people around). Still a quick rebake and whisking the skirt off and back on helped so it should be noted that while the above is a solution - it's not a permanent one and it'd be nice if these incidents didn't happen. Still I"m quite happy there is a work around and am happily wearing skirts and dresses again.

This is not a problem I have had at all, yet I was directed to this thread for the issue I am having, which deals with prim based items as I have seen one other poster comment on. Both myself and my wife have certain pieces of inventory, and with her it is a growing number of them, that will not rez either on our avatars or in-world. These are all prim attachments, including prim skirts, prim hair, and other accessories. They are from various designers and purchased at various times. These items show in inventory, but do not show worn when we try to put them on. This seems to have been occuring ever since the 1.19.1.4 Viewer release. This is not a case of them being invisible, you can not drag and drop them to the ground either, it is like the inventory system is not recognizing these items. We have cleared cache, and uninstalled SL, and all the other clicky-rituals that have been suggested. This is happening in more than one account and on different PCs with different statistics, even to the point of the exact same problem occurs in each account regardless of which computer is being used by the account. VWR-2778 Skirt Issue

Here are the words you want to see: my experiments can be reproduced.

Using the 1.20 RC 5 viewer,
a "new" skirt is one that has not been worn recently,
an "old" skirt is one that has been successfully worn, recently or not.
Recent, for me, is defined as a skirt worn using the 1.19.1.4 or 1.20 RC 5 viewers.

Experiment 1
1 – clear cache, and log in to SL
2 – wear an "old" skirt – this will succeed
3 – wear a "new" skirt – this too, will succeed
4 – log out of SL

Experiment 2
1 – clear cache, and log in to SL
2 – wear a "new" skirt – this will fail
3 – rebake textures
4 – the "new " skirt will appear properly
5 – wear an "old" skirt – this will succeed
6 – log out of SL

Experiment 3
1 – clear cache, and log in to SL
2 – wear a "new" skirt – this will fail
3 – rebake textures
4 – the "new" skirt will appear properly
5 – wear a different "new" skirt – this will fail
6 – rebake textures
7 – the "new" skirt will appear properly
8 – wear an "old" skirt – this will succeed
9 – log out of SL

I think it must have something to do with skirts with alphas in them-those that don't have any can be worn fine, all others now invariably fail to appear. I can rebake textures as often as I want, they won't appear.

LadyJane Bailey added a comment - 06/May/08 08:17 AM
This has been happening since May 5, 2008. If I stand in appearance mode sometimes the skirt appears sometimes it doesn't. Today, been standing in appearance mode for 45 minutes. Skirt will show during this time. Closed out and skirt is gone. Went back into appearance mode skirt is back on. This is NOt a skirt with "Alpha". This happens even with skirts I create from the appearance menu...

Have had the bug for a while now, but noticed something else.

When i first got the bug, i was on my PC with the Release Candidate viewer, and as soon as it happend, it happend on two accounts, one old and one new.

Last night i played SL on my laptop for the first time since then, which of course has completely different hardware, it has the original viewer still, but it also has the bug now. So i dont think its connected to either the account, or the hardware or software on the players side but just happens randomly and once your tagged you screwed.

I may have found one interesting correlation with this issue.

As a clothing designer, I work with numerous clients on the skirt issue.

For most all of the problem skirts... there seems to be a very good chance that the original texture I used to make the skirt is missing from my textures folder ... probably when SL had inventory loss problems in the past.

This is not 100%. I've uploaded new textures and still had trouble getting the skirt to load, but it's so much more prevalent on older skirts where the original uploaded skirt mesh texture was a victim of inventory loss.

Hope that helps in finding the bug. Thank you for all your attention to this matter!

Hi folks,

So I finally had some time to look at this again. I think it's a rendering issue where we weren't setting glColorMask to the proper state during the baking of the skirt texture (or for any of the other baked textures for that matter) and this would also explain some of the randomness. I've also found that wearing a HUD exacerbates the problem, which would make sense if we're not cleaning up well after hud rendering.

I'm testing a fix right now that looks promising, and will let you know how progress goes.

For now a workaround might be to take off any HUDs you have, put on your clothing, make sure it bakes, then put on the HUD.

I apologize for how long this bug has been around. It seemed to occur starting in 1.18.6, right when we started not cleaning up glColorMasks well.

Hi, everyone.

Reading the last comments... well, I'm not alone at all! My favorite dresses are now "unwearable" and I don't know what more I can do. I followed the suggestions, but none worked. Switching to appearance mode and then wearing the skirt worked fine, but now it doesn't anymore.

I'm using RC6, my video card is NVIDIA GeForce 6200.

Hope that this bug is fixed soon! Thanx for all attention to this matter!

I hope a more permanent fix is in place soon.

I have mads my living in SL on over 150 non-prim kilts that I make and sell and this bug has rendered my entire selection unwearable. I have received complaints from buyers and my sales have dropped to practically nothing.

That is a bingo Zen! I met a girl recently who was wearing a nice system skirt with no problems. But she was fairly new so I helped her a bit and gave her a HUD AO. She IMd me later saying her skirt would not appear any more and asked if the AO might have caused it because it only seemed to have a problem when she had the HUD on. I didn't see how it could be related but I understand a bit better now.

Fix is committed, but I don't know if it will make the 1.21 viewer or not. We'll have to see how the QA process goes. I'll keep you posted.

Two points:

When this fix is introduced, you may still have a disappeared skirt when you try it on the first time as it will still use the old, borked, baked texture at first. Hit ctrl+alt+r for a rebake and it should look fine.

Also, if anyone is running open source, I could post a patch if you all want to check out the fix and see if it works for you. Let me know if anyone's interested.

Sorry this took so long to look at. Once we get our crash rate down, I'll be able to hit more of these type of bugs.

Yes please Zen, could we please have the patch made available so other viewers could pick it up sooner? (That would allow those of us who use them, and have held off releasing new clothing designs using system skirts, and to get back to how well SL worked last October, rather than having to wait until it gets into some new LL viewer and then trickles down to other viewers.) Thanks muchly!

I have found that if I don't have anything in my HUD, or anything scripted equipped, when I put on the skirt, I generally have a good chance at it showing and staying for me. I haven't checked with others.

I have also found that when the skirt DOESN'T show for me, it will show for some other people, and Not show for some.

Hope this helps.

I heard a method to solve this problem from my friend.
But it is only a case to be able to edit an invisible skirt.

If you can modify an invisible skirt,

1. Wear an invisible skirt.
2. Open appearance window and select skirt edittnig mode.
(Edit -> Appearance -> Skirt)
3. CHANGE the COLOR of the skirt and SAVE it.
4. Close appearance window and Open ONCE AGAIN.
5. RETURN the COLOR and SAVE it.

When you do it in this way, your skirt is displayed.
But this is a temporary solution.
And all skirts may not be displayed by this method.

I'm not good at English. I always use a translation site, sorry...

This patch will only work on upcoming code drops.

To get it to work with earlier drops, change gGL.setColorMask(true, true) to glColorMask(true, true, true, true)

Also, you may still have a couple of invisible skirts after the patch is applied. Rebaking should clear them up.

For us ignorant types, can you give instructions on how to install it?

Also...is there any explanation for why the problem is so much worse in the 1.20 Dazzle Release Candidate viewers? I do not have the problem if I use 1.19.1.4, except on skirts that have been previously corrupted by trying to wear them when using 1.20 (5) and above.

Comment [ Zen, first of all thanks for the patch! :-)

Only... I tried to apply it to the latest source code available, the RC-1.20.6.
The compiler tells me: error C2039: 'setColorMask' : is not a member of 'LLGLImmediate'

And indeed, LLGLImmediate has nothing even close to it! :-(
So, 2 trues or 4 trues, there seems to be no chance to use the patch with that version...

Is there a released version that can be patched, or should I wait for the next code drop?

I have tried all the suggestions for patches, fixes, etc....It seems that SOMETIMES I can wear skirts, and SOMETIMES I cannot, and even if I manage to wear one, it can disappear after TP'ing or just spontaneously. This has become so frustrating, that I just refuse to buy anything with a skirt layer now, and will only wear dresses with pant layers. I hope there is a permanent solution found soon. Sometimes I have more luck with the old viewer, 1.19.1, but not always. I can imagine that clothing vendors must be quite frustrated as well.

I do strongly agree with kanja sands. I am enraged as I spend most of my L$ on clothes, or shall I say *I used to*. The huge majority of my clothes are basically useless and I spent too many L$ to just take it sitting down, which would have the advantage of covering my naked derriere. MY question is =>when<= and =>how soon<= and =>how good<= will the "fix" be ?
Although it may be obvious I am NOT spending another single L$ on any clothes until it is really fixed. Not one, none, rien, nada.
I really do appreciate the enlightenment of the proposed solution **change gGL.setColorMask(true, true) to glColorMask(true, true, true, true)*** I am sure it did help the probably 1% of the members with a dual Intel processor implanted in the brain. I'll keep it in the freezer. I hate to throw away left overs.

Respectfully yours

Sophiee and kanja, what Zen is saying is that he has found the problem, and the fix is being tested internally at linden lab. At the moment there is nothing that can be done until testing of the fix is complete. I understand that you and many other people are frustrated, but at this stage, there is nothing that can be done to speed up the process.

In the meantime, before you put a skirt on, it may help if you remove any HUD objects before putting on the skirt, and waiting for it to finish loading before putting the hud objects back on.

(to see if you have any HUD objects worn, right click on yourself, select Take Off then select HUD and then remove every item there.)

@Zen: The fix seems to work for me, without requiring me to re-bake at all (applied to 1.20 RC7 source0

Yes! Detaching my one and only HUD attachment, lets me wear my skirts again. I have spent the last two hours playing in my clothes closet trying them all on. Once the skirt was on, I could reattach my MystiTool and the skirt stayed on.

One skirt persisted in turning transparent, but I could fix it by going into Appearance mode for a second.

I'm thrilled to wear my skirts again, but I'm wearing glitch pants under everything until I know the software problem is fixed.

Yesterday, after login, I was without my skirt suddenly. I tried various ways to get it back, e.g. by clearing cache, rebaking textures, ... none of them worked. I created a new skirt, placed my texture on it, resized it and it disappeared. /me cursed

Than I though - it might be alpha - saved my texture as PNG, without alpha chanel - uploaded it - created a new skirt - and so far, i didn't had any problems anymore.

As this problem occurred the same time, to different people using different viewers, I asume there was something wrong with some some server side patch. ... btw i'm using the official linux viewer on a radeon 9250 with a tungsten driver.

MY tushy is really getting soooo cold some days.

Alyx Sands added a comment - 26/May/08 02:32 PM
Sophiee, I'll try to be a kind soul. Because it IS fixed. In the current Release Candidate viewer, as it says at the top under "Fix Version". It is NOT fixed in the current normal viewer, 1.19, BUT in the 1.20 Release Candidate. It can only be fixed in the main viewer when the Release Candidate becomes the main viewer.

And those patches are not for US to download, unless you are able to compile your own viewer from the source code (Well, I'm not, as I'm lacking the necessary programmes) - they are not programmes in themselves.

And I don't want to be impolite, but as it is indeed fixed and just awaits a new release of the main viewer, people do NOT need to post further comments telling everybody that their skirts are gone in any viewer BEFORE RC 8.

Lyssa Varun added a comment - 28/May/08 06:24 PM
I hope you're really sure this is fixed because a brand new item acquired in 1.20RC7 did exactly the same thing with a system skirt.

It looks like you need to 'update' your avatar rendering for the fix to take effect.

I was wearing a (disappeared) prim skirt in the official release, and when I logged to RC8, simply taking it off and wearing it again wasn't fixing it, I had to do that while in 'Edit Appearance' mode.

Previous comments state the fix is in version 1.20 Release Candidate (RC). So you are correct Tammy in that you will still see the bug in 1.19. This does not prevent the bug report being listed as fixed. If the bug is removed from the current RC, which it appears the community and the Lindens are stating, then having the jira in closed/fixed state is correct.

To observe if the issue is resolved for you, the RC is required. If you are able to replicate the issue with the RC that has the fix listed, re-opening the bug report would then be very appropriate.

In my case running RC 1.20.8 (88152) has the issue gone. Reverting to 1.19 sees it re-appear. Going back to the RC after a 1.19 version, I need to use one of the listed workarounds, then its gone again. All my experiences are as expected based on the details and comments in this report.

By definition "Fixed means that the fix is confirmed public. " Which has been done. Not in the client you are using, but in the RC.

Description REPRO from Mick Linden (try this in WindLight):

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

I know there are a lot of comments, that's why I edited the description.

Before someone re-opens this again, check this:

- You are using a viewer 1.20 Release Candidate or higher
- You tried to re-bake (Advanced Menu>Character>Rebake textures or press , ctrl+alt+r on PC, cmd+opt+r on MAC, I believe) and this does not fix the problem.

Also, your dissappeared skirt must be a system-skirt, not a prim-skirt.

I ran into this again today after not seeing it for awhile, with a new outfit I'd just bought. Skirt rezzed briefly, then vanished. It appears in edit appearance mode, then gone in regular mode. It's no mod so I couldn't try modifying it. A rebake seemed to fix it, but as soon as I TP'd somewhere it was gone again (fortunately I was wearing underwear), and no amount of rebaking would bring it back (just edit mode, and only while in edit mode).

One weird effect after teleporting was the skirt was gone, except for a green band around the knees, and on that band was the text that was floating above my friend – her group tag, their name, and a floating text line that an object they were wearing was generating!

I'm running client 1.20.0 (84432), except it's calling it a Release client rather than a Release Candidate; currently on the download page 1.19.1.4 is the Release version and 1.20.13 is Release Candidate, so I don't understand why mine's not called Release Candidate. I will now try to install the 1.20.13 Release Candidate client and see if that fixes it.

    • Running Release Candidate 1.20.13 now, the problem still existed (I was wearing a working self-made skirt when I first logged in using the new version, then I switched to the one I bought that was causing problems, and it vanished again) until I TP'd somewhere else, then the skirt appeared and has been working for the next 2-3 places I TP'd, including back to where I was before. So I don't know if the problem is fixed and it was just a delayed reaction, recaching kind of thing, or if the problem is still there in 1.20.13

When I add a prim skirt I get a long skirt gray rezz and then it disappears even though inventory thinks I am still wearing it. When I reset default avatar and rebake, I can wear a skirt for that session but sometimes it disappears when I tp.

The lack of response on this issue is just one of the things that is making me investigate alternatives to Second Life. I worked hard to run a successful wedding business, this issue means I cannot use any of the good tuxes I have purchased or any of the wedding official items I have purchased. It ialso nterferes with taking pictures of the weddings.
Offering no alternatives (like allowing us to use an old viewer that worked before the Lindens broke it) shows a lack of regard to people who have spent hundreds and even thousands of RL dollars in this environment. This issue has been around for over 4 months, that is too long to have nothing done yet. I cannot imagine a more clear way for the Lindens to tell me they do not care for my business or my money,

Well suposidly 1.20 fixes this issue. I have not had time to test it, but you might try the Release Canditiate. Also the work around is to remove all your HUD's, rebake your textures (ctrl-alt-r), then attach your HUDs once the skirt is visable again. If that does not work, then remove huds, take off skirt, put skirt back on, rebake then reattach huds.

REPRO from Mick Linden (try this in WindLight):

1.20 for several versions now, does indeed fix this issue. I haven't seen it for several iterations.

The bigger problem is that not everyone is using it, so will still see this bug. LL can't help that, though.

I may be lost here but this skirt bug is still a very big issue for so many people. If there is a new ticket open on this or if someone has information that will help direct me to it please let me know.

LL please take serious notice of this. This is affecting the designing community as a whole and is not fair to those paying customers that the viewer isn't right.

If I'm off base here please set me straight. Thanks.

Rebel Hope

p.s. wasn't Torley looking into this and if so what did he find?

Also, I have been able to get most of my customers to get the skirt to rez by doing a list of different things one being installing updated drivers but I do know there is an issue with some new drivers and windlight so do so with caution and look into your video card and it's compatibility in SL. Rebake and clearing cache often works with another rebake once back after clearing cache. Once I made a brand new skirt with a newly uploaded texture to it and it fixed that but not always has that worked.

hi I found a fix which seems to work: enter in edit appearance mode, select the faulty skirt, move any cursor (and replace it on the desired value). The skirt disappears, and then reappears about 30 seconds later. Save and exit appearance mode at this moment.

Otherwise I submitted a ticket for this, 4051-5070048 (closed) and the team confirmed me that the 1.19 viewer is faulty, and a fix was found in the 1.20 viewer. So we just have to download any of the 1.20 series viewer, without waiting for it to be mandatory.

Well using the 1.20.17 version of SL.. haven't had this problem at all since downloading it..

HOWEVER.. soon as I updated my GFX driver this morning, to Nvidia 178.13, the issue reappeard once more

My guess is that there needs to be a fix in the next client to correct this again? Note: Rebaking works.. for about 10 seconds.. then the skirt snaps back to the transparent version.

Atriel, there are known avatar rendering issues for the Nvidia 178 series of graphics drivers, please see issue VWR-9358 (Texture rendering problem Nvidia 178.13 release drivers)

The following workaround has been reported:

  • Enable the Advanced Menu (Ctrl-Alt-D)
  • Disable rendering of Palletized Textures (Ctrl-Alt-F7)
  • Rebake (Ctrl-Alt-R)

Please add your comments/vote to issue VWR-9358

This issue did come back to haunt me with new hardware and drivers. I can confirm I'm no longer seeing it on Second Life 1.22.0 (103519) Nov 20 2008 15:37:22 (Second Life Release Candidate).

This is still present in the latest 'Second Life 1.22.9 (110075) Feb 10 2009 12:43:24' client. I have tried all of the above fixes, and the skirt still is not visible to other avatars.

I am using a GF8200 (integrated), though I cannot disable Palletized Textures (already disabled I am amusing? ) . I can see my skirt, though others can't. (How embarrassing, to be running around SL thinking you're wearing a skirt that's not actually there!) - How ever, when I login, the skirt is invisible until I rebake. I thought it was just rez lag or something. Apparently it's not. Sometimes when tinkering with the skirts parameters, it will disappear until I exit the edit appearance menu, or change another parameter.

Relogging, clearing the cache, creating a new skirt, wearing other skirts or reloading all attachments or using 'Test Female' in char. tests does not fix the issue. This is getting a bit old now. This issue haunted me as a newbie, and still is today! That's over a year!

I have the latest nVidia Drivers (7.15.11.8206), latest clients and have verified that others cannot see the system skirts I wear. (Like I said previously, I tried new skirts and old ones: None show up).

I tested the standard 1.21 Client, it does not show the system skirt either.

If not one skirt works, It's not one affected skirt, but how the viewer is rendering them.

Packet loss was 0 - 0.4% during the tests. (Last night, when I was testing with my alt. Today it is 0.0%)

Since I've confirmed that others cannot see my system skirts, this is not just a problem on my end, it's a grid wide problem. - So I am unresolving this issue.... Again.

If you'd like to see if you can see my system skirts, contact me in world. (Most people who I tested this with were using 1.21 or newer clients, and nVidia cards).

I repro with 1.22RC.

A part of the skirt and the hair disappears.

This phenomenon recovers according to the following procedures.

1. camera zoom out

use mouse wheel etc...

2. camera zoom in

use esc key

It is trouble in the display (Rendering of avatar) immediately after the teleport.

No, as I said in my first post.

"How ever, when I login, the skirt is invisible until I rebake. I thought it was just rez lag or something. Apparently it's not. Sometimes when tinkering with the skirts parameters, it will disappear until I exit the edit appearance menu, or change another parameter."

That means the issue is still present, though halfway fixed. Rebaking fixes the issue halfway, I can see the skirt, but others cannot.

This could be another issue, but from what I see, it is the same. In either case, I am creating a new issue since I am tired of this one being re-opened and re-resolved, and the chance that this is a different bug.
