IF it's any help, there's an option in file. Close all folders. Works wonders for such situations.

Torley Linden added a comment - 17/Oct/07 03:33 PM
Please provide a step-by-step reproduction so we're able to recreate this problem clearly – the info you gave isn't enough. Thanks!

harris emmons added a comment - 04/May/08 02:22 PM
This is still occurring in 1.19.1.

Open Inventory. Open New Window. You now have two open inventory windows. Select All Items in Window One and Recent Items in the Window Two.
In the Recent (Window 2), close all folders. Click on the My Inventory indicator. Each and every folder will be shown, but NOT opened. Scroll down to item of interest. Drag Item, say a watermelon, over to the appropriate folder (perhaps Best Things) under the All tab, Window One.
In Window 2, Recent Item tab now "throw" you back to the top of the Recent Items And OPEN all folders.
Assumed proper behavior for Window 2 would be to leave closed folders closed and be on the item below where the watermelon was before you dragged it to the Best Things folder in Window 1 under the All Items tab.

I think the problem arises when the filter setting is set at any period other than "Since Logoff", then the folders automatically opens whenever you drop any item into the inventory folder. All the other folders will spawn open. The problem goes away if you "Reset the filter" or if you change the filter setting to "Since logoff".

harris emmons added a comment - 18/May/08 01:49 PM
Nicoladie, it might very well work with "Since Logoff", however, the need to sort items is not limited to things you added that day. It needs to work no matter what time frame one has selected, but thanks for the suggestion.

Sophia Tantalus added a comment - 08/Aug/08 11:56 PM
This drives me CRAZY. I keep thinking there must be some preference to turn it off, but if there is I can't find it. Sorting inventory takes forever because I have to re-navigate to where I left off. I've taken to command-selecting so I can get through a batch in one "refresh." This is one of the nagging annoyances that sucks my time and makes keeping my inventory at a reasonable size a real chore.

Nulflux Negulesco added a comment - 19/Sep/08 10:03 AM
I must agree, this is a very annoying behavior. I think what Harris is saying is simply this:

When we drag an item from one window into a folder in another open inventory window - all folders are expanded in both windows, even folders that were not part of the drag operation. When this happens, we lose our position in inventory and we waste a lot of time re-navigating to the folder's we already had in view. When moving mass selections this is not so much of a problem. When moving one or few items at a time we spend more time looking for our last position than actually moving the files. This becomes painfully apparent when trying to sort things like textures, when there can be hundreds of textures in a folder that need to be sorted into other folders.

Yes, please fix!!!!!

I want my folders to stay open when I open them and stay closed when I close them!!!!

JeanBaptiste Eilde added a comment - 05/Jan/09 11:35 AM - edited
Yes. Firebird has said it simply but well. The Inventory file tree should remain open or closed as set by the user. This would take at least 90% of the frustration out of inventory management for me. And, by keeping my inventory leaner, everyone would benefit by less stress on the asset servers. PLEASE fix this.

Alexa Linden added a comment - 14/Apr/09 09:54 AM - edited
You may want to check under preferences/pop-ups and see if you have yourself set to open folders every time you receive something into your inventory.

With this option not set, we were not able to reproduce this.

Please see pic above for help

harris emmons added a comment - 14/Apr/09 06:56 PM
I made the changes Alexa Linden suggested on 14/Apr/09 and all the folders still open. What I want is to be able to add to and modify items in my inventory and not have the entire tree of the inventory open up, just stay where I was so I can move to the next item, not jump to some other random spot.

Lauren Trafalgar added a comment - 29/May/09 02:11 PM
Why is this issue marked resolved?
I have the preferences set as recommended by Alexa Linden but the folders STILL open every time, wasting SO much of my time and effort to reposition over and over and over again. Please provide clear, specific instructions for setting parameters that will correct this behavior or keep it open as an issue. It absolutely drives me CRAZY. As expressed in several of the other comments, what is necessary to keep open folders open and closed folders closed? PLEASE HELP!! If you can't reproduce, feel free to IM me. I can give you any additional information you need. How about NOT marking it closed unless some of us respond saying we tried the recommended resolution and that it works. Thanks very much. Lauren Trafalgar

Valentino Tendaze added a comment - 29/May/09 02:21 PM
It drives me nuts too.

Not an issue about brand new Inventory items (as suggested by Alexa),
but when reorganising Inventory - closed folders don't stay closed when you drag something into them (usually from a 2nd Inventory window)

So the issue is with existing items being moved into other folders, causing all folders to open up.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 29/May/09 02:36 PM
@Lauren - Does this only happen with the Recent Items tab (like in Harris' repros)?

Lauren Trafalgar added a comment - 30/May/09 09:49 AM
Here are the exact conditions under which this issue happens with me....
Applies whether I'm in the All Items or Recent inventory window.

If I have any kind of filtering set on (of any type) OR i have something typed in the search box at the top,
AND I drag an inventory item to a different location, all top level folders in the displayed inventory open.

I have a HUGE inventory and yes, I now organize what I add to inventory but I don't have the time to do a total inventory reorg so I have to rely on search and filtering.

harris emmons added a comment - 12/Jun/09 01:37 PM
I agree with Valentino. It is still here, still an issue. I have also unchecked "Automatically show newly accepted objects in Inventory". A notecard comes in and zap - away from what I was working on right to the Notecards. I don't know what was changed, and would love to know what 1.23.4 was suppose to do. There are so many annoying things associated with Inventory, but this is beyond An Annoyance.

This annoys me on a daily basis. My version is 1.22.11(113941).

this happens to me when:

-dragging a no copy/no mod item into another person's profile, causes all the folders to open on recent tab

-after searching for word "bed", then dragging several results to one folder

-dragging an item out of inventory, in an inventory search

Ferragamo Taurog added a comment - 27/Aug/09 07:59 AM
How can the Lindens not reproduce this??? I have an inventory window open. There is a folder of 12 items. Below the folder (not inside the folder) is one item. I close the folder. I then drag the one item immediately below it up into the folder. The stupid folder opens again and ALL FOLDERS INSIDE IT POP OPEN ALSO!

Sorry for shouting, but this is SO annoying!

So, what am i doing wrong? I have unchecked "Automatically show newly accepted objects in Inventory" (which should not have any effect on this anyway). I want the stupid folder to stay CLOSED so that I can continue to sort inventory items.

Even worse, if I have two windows open, all the folders pop open on BOTH of them. It's just insane...

Ferragamo Taurog added a comment - 27/Aug/09 08:09 AM - edited
Oh... it should be obvious from the above, but maybe it isn't. This insane behavior happens if you have some filter criteria set, like characters typed into the string filter box. What happens, apparently, is that when you move something in inventory, a new search is done and the client ever so unhelpfully displays the results of the new search, ignoring that you have closed many of the folders it ever so unhelpfully opened last time. The correct solution is, unless I (a) rename an object or (b) change the search criteria, please client please, do not do the search again and open all my folders!

Waterflower Meadowbrook added a comment - 31/Aug/09 10:59 PM
My problem with inventory is when I search recent items or just items each time I close a folder all of the folders re-open and the list goes back to the top making it time-consuming to look for something. I can't believe that I am the only one who has this problem. I use a Mac and it doesn't matter which one I use it happens on both my PowerBook and my MacBook OSX10.4.x & 10.5.x. Using your suggested settings or ANY settings the results are always the same and it has ALWAYS BEEN THIS WAY!! I can easily spend the equivalent of a workday trying to sort through my inventory and then when I just can't stand it anymore I quit in frustration. DO SOMETHING TO FIX THIS! You give us the ability to have these things and then make it hell to try dealing with them. Just like prims, bling, flexi and a whole host of other frustrations. As a paying member I feel YOU should accommodate us not the other way around.

Chrystina Foxdale added a comment - 06/Nov/09 10:40 AM
Yes ! PLEASE fix this !
Please give us the option to keep all folders closed unless we open them - or at the very least, to only open the folder that an item gets dragged (or dropped by acceptance) into.
It is _extremely _ frustrating, to the point of throwing my hands in the air and giving up on sorting inventory.
Yes, I know there is the option of "Close All Folders", but it gets pretty tiring after the 15th or 20th repetition.

I close all folders in both tabs (All & Recent) --> Open "My Inventory" --> open the Objects folder, in either tab, and drag anything from it into a different, closed, System (or any other) folder. POP ! Every folder in the Recent tab opens faster than I can blink. A notice comes in - I accept whatever it is that's attached POP ! - not just the Landmarks (or Notecard, or...) folder - but every other System and every sub-folder that has Recent inventory. This causes me to lose my place in the inventory sorting/searching that I was doing, since it now focuses on the newesr item. And if there are two windows open, so I can sort & drag more easily, the Recent tab in both windows goes POP ! The All tab seems to be mostly unaffected by this, but will go pop ! from time to time.

I have unchecked all boxes about inventory in preferences, set "autoAcceptNewInventory" to False in the debug settings, and have run out of ideas.
The only way I have found to stop the d*** thing from exploding open like a dropped bowl of cereal is to set the filter to "Since Logoff". However, since I usually do not want to sit and sort inventory as soon as I log in, I almost always have it set to 1 day & 8 hours; that way I can sort the items I picked up the day before, as well as items which came in when I was off the Grid.

I beg of you, PLEASE fix this – A bottle of Folder Glue or something......

I'm running Sl on an iMac with 10.5.8
