[UPDATE]
The problem seems to be related to AMD's atioglxx.dll. After installing Catalyst 7.10, SL would not crash if i logged onto an empty sim. Also, the textures would get completely messed up (screenshot attached).

Recently i tried installing the NGO ATI Optimized Drivers from NGOHQ ( http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=ati ), which surprisingly fixed the problem, and SecondLife runs normally now without any crashes.

Note that the latest version of the NGO drivers (1.7.3) is based on Catalyst 7.3 , which does not support the new HD-series cards. Because of this, no driver was actually installed, i'm still using the one that was supplied with Catalyst 7.10, however atioglxx.dll and a few other files were replaced with the older 7.3 ones, which got everything to run smooth again.

*******************
The GPU on my Radeon HD2400PRO keeps restarting when running SecondLife. The card runs fine for every other application, with both Direct3D and OpenGL, so this issue is isolated only for the secondlife viewer.

I have tried all possible combinations of display drivers, starting from Catalyst7.5 up to the latest (7.9), also the Omega Drivers v3.8.413. None of them work.

The problem basically is that the GPU keeps freezing, causing the VPU Recover to reset it. This happens 2-3 times until the system locks up and the monitor shuts down. (In some specific driver cases i could hear SL sounds which meant it was still running, without the GPU).

This happened on my Radeon 9250 graphics card aswell, in the end i had to change it. This is a brand new graphics card and SL still refuses to work properly.

If you start Second Life and your screen goes blank then switches off (either off, or power save) check SL to ensure that your running it in a Windowed mode, not Full Screen, because if your screen is changing resolutions when you start SL, it sounds like its trying to go Fullscreen, and its going to an incompatible display mode (so the screen in an attempt to protect itself) switches off (powersave).

This would not explain system hangs, but it is possible that the system is continuing to operate normally behind a black screen. Suggest hitting "Alt-Enter" (hot key to switch to Windowed mode) and see if the screen comes back on with SL in a window. May take a moment.

Thanks for the info on this, it's understandably frustrating.

Have you tried to run various graphics stress test apps to further diagnose the problem?

And have you also tried going to Preferences' Graphics and disabling VBO?

Unfortunately it's hard to do more with this unless other people are having the same problem.

Please also clarify whether the viewer is crashing, or if the graphics card is – you list both.

Pesho Replacement added a comment - 17/Oct/07 04:18 PM
Thank you all for the input! And to answer your questions:
  • I NEVER run SL in FullScreen mode.
  • The viewer in itself isn't crashing, since, after the GPU shuts down, i can still hear my own footsteps when moving forward.
  • I have tried all various combinations in SL's Preferences tab, and VBO is off by default anyway.
  • I have ran the 3dMark 03 benchmark on my card with different settings, and apart from the varying framerate, i have experienced no problems. The problem isn't with the card, because not only is it brand new, but i experienced the same VPU-Recover issues on my ASUS Radeon 9250 aswell.

I think that the problem is somewhere between the SecondLife viewer and OpenGL and the ATI drivers. Since the HD2000 series are ATi's newest generation graphics card, SecondLife does not fully support them.

  • I also have to mention that the same issues with my Asus Radeon 9250 AGP card disappeared after the new versions of SL and the catalyst drivers came out, so it sounds logical that the problem is that SL isn't quite compatible with the current drivers?

Pesho Replacement added a comment - 17/Oct/07 04:27 PM
And please don't mark this as "Resolved", because i don't want it to be forgotten forever like the other "Needs More Info" issue i posted.

I've been experiencing this issue as well. I am able to log into Second Life, and get as far as clicking "OK" or "Close" on any messages that have come up since my last time (Group Notices, Items accepted/returned), etc.) and the viewer crashes completely.

I have the latest (Catalyst 8.8) drivers and Control Center installed on my computer.

Computer Brand: E-Machines WD3400
Processor: AMD 64 3000+
Memory: 1.5G DDR 5300
ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro (PCIe) 256MB
ATI TV Wonder TV Tuner card

I haven't tried the optimized OpenGL drivers that were suggested in the OP's comments, but will try them now. I've had this issue even through a complete reinstallation of WIndows VIsta Ultimate on the computer.

If there's anything more that you need from me to resolve this issue, please let me know. I'll be more than happy to provide the information requested.

AlwaysIcey, there is a known issue with the catalyst 8.8 which ATI have fixed in the 8.9 release (see VWR-8717 )

Please check with your graphics card manufacturer for updated drivers.

If it is still an issue, please try the latest RC 1.21.5 which can be downloaded from here http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php Test Viewers > Release Candidate Viewers

  • please add your full computer environment Help > About Second Life
  • please run the DirectX Diagnostic Tool

Vista: Click Start > (in start search) Type dxdiag > Click on the programme > Save All Information.

Please attach the text file to this issue.

I am having this exact issue now. I will experience a VPU Recovery error constantly, no matter what settings I'm using or where I am in the game. Eventually, it will force me to restart, as the client will simply be a black screen.

CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (3013 MHz) <---- (Athlon64 X2 6000+)
Memory: 2047 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card Vendor: ATI Technologies Inc.
Graphics Card: Radeon X1950 Pro
OpenGL Version: 2.1.8304 Release

I'm using the official Catalyst 8.12 drivers. This issue occurs on no other games, including many which require MUCH more powerful hardware than Second Life does.

jaereth enoch added a comment - 29/Dec/08 08:03 PM
This file is a copy of my DirectX diagnostic, for use in troubleshooting the problem.

Jaereth, please try the latest RC which can be downloaded from here Release Candidate Test Viewers

Please see this site for Turning off Windlight Rendering

Please try the hardware test from Knowledge Base Why do textures sometimes look messed up?

If this is still an issue please post a Ticket with Support for account-specific help

Thank you : )

This issue was resolved as "Needs More Info" during a batch clean-up of PJIRA issues.

Reason: for an extended length of time, this bug seems to be missing enough details (reproducible steps) for Linden Lab to import the bug and investigate. Also the last affected version of the viewer on this report is viewer 1.21 or 1.20, 1.19, or even earlier, which are versions that are no longer actively supported.

It is possible that this bug is indeed valid and should remain open-- however, Linden Lab needs the following pieces of information before it is Reopened:

To reopen, please do all of the following:

(1) It is very important to confirm that this bug still occurs in the latest official version 1.23. Please upgrade to that version by browsing to http://get.secondlife.com , and test if you can still reproduce the bug using Viewer 1.23.

(2) If so, then please Reopen this issue and BE SURE to choose the "Affects Version/s" = 1.23

(3) Also, re-describe the steps that another person can follow to experience this bug. An example of a good "recipe" for a bug report can be found here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Issue_tracker#Guidelines_for_a_bug_report

(4) Come and attend the inworld bug triages, where you can meet with Linden Lab employees to consider, verify, and expedite bugs for fixing. For more information, see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Bug_triage

Thank you for helping us improve Second Life!
