 Description  « Hide
Avatar arms and legs go black or take compressed textures from other areas. Happens with multiple avatars wearing different skins and different clothing. Removing all clothing fixes the problem, but it returns after a time when clothing is worn. Rebaking textures sometimes fixes the problem temporarialy. Also shows up when entering different Sims. Editing body parts has no effect on the problem. Has been happening since before the 1.17 release Others can see the worng textures as well.

You mention that others see the wrong textures as well. Do they see the same wrong textures? It would be interesting to exchange screenshots with others who are simultaneously seeing the wrong textures, to be sure its the same wrong texture.

Have you tried turning off the Avatar Vertex problem described at http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=405 ?

Clinton Oddfellow added a comment - 30/Jun/07 11:41 PM
I've never had the psychadelic part of the issue, but I get the black arms/legs below the knee/waistband issue, and others see it the same as I do. When clothing is worn, skirts end right at where the black starts, and no shape is retained in clothing, from where the black starts, it all sucks in against your limbs. I started an issue related to this, and I'll attach screenshot from what I've been seeing. I notice that the black parts don't show up in edit apearance either, you just get your body with gaps.

Clinton Oddfellow added a comment - 30/Jun/07 11:43 PM
Black arms/tummyband/legs/head (can't see the head under my avatar head, but it's like wearing a balaclava – the face is fine but the rest of the head is black. This also details the appearance editing window, how all the black doesn't appear at all.

Clinton Oddfellow added a comment - 02/Jul/07 11:39 AM
I have cleared cache, reinstalled client, disabled Avatar Vertex Program, Vertex Shaders, Vertex Buffer Objects, still having the problem. It persists through changes of skin/shape/clothes. Have rebaked textures with no success, created new shape/skin, does not solve problem. Upgraded this to blocker, because it seems to be a rather major bug, and is preventing me from doing simple things, like, wearing clothes. There doesn't seem to be anything I can do to remedy this myself. The attachment I just posted (brokenclothes.jpg) shows how this bug affects clothing. the "skirt" part of that outfit should reach the ground.

Clinton Oddfellow added a comment - 18/Jul/07 06:18 PM
Upon further research, this bug affects first look. Upon logging into the main client, I'm able to create new skins that don't have the problem, but corrupted skins remain corrupted in official viewer. Logging back into First Look will cause corruption again, and require a new skin yet again.

Nicholaz Beresford added a comment - 19/Jul/07 03:43 AM

I have seen this occasionally on a NVIDIA 7600GS, especially when switching between windows (away from the viewr to another application and back). This is the regular viewer (or derivate of the regular viewer in my case).

Have you tried if the VBO (vertex buffer objects) option makes a difference?

Eole Laval added a comment - 23/Jul/07 11:54 PM
I have the same problem on winxp with a Nvidia Geforce 6800. In my case, it is caused by using too small a viewer window. So the workaround is: make your viewer window larger, go into appearance mode and change to one of the basic skins from your inventory. Your avatar should now look ok. Go out of appearance mode. Your avi should still look right. Go back into appearance mode, and put your usual skin back on. Everything should now be ok, until you make your window too small, in which case it comes back.

Hope this helps.

mihai antwerp added a comment - 22/Aug/07 09:29 AM
It happend to a few of my customers.. also on other parts of the AV.. the head beeing black.. It seems to be an alt specific problem, because with other alts they did not have the problem. With some it only happens with some skins, when they change to another skin, it disappears (but keeps existing with the skin, or copies of the same skin I send them), with others it seemed to be permanently

lum pfohl added a comment - 06/Oct/07 02:45 PM
The issue affects me too. I cannot say under what circumstances it occurs.

It does happen to different copies of the same skin. That is, I just can't put on a different copy of my skin and expect it to go away.

But I have adopted the following practice to "restore" my original look.

  • put on a different outfit entirely which also includes a different skin
  • that new outfit MUST have no anomalies. If it does, I find another outfit / skin to change into
  • clear cache
  • relog
  • restore the original outfit which had the black arms / neck / legs and it's fixed 95% of the time.

Rosen Janus added a comment - 15/Oct/07 06:43 AM
Not just high-end graphics cards. I have a peice-of-crap GeForce4 440 MX with AGP and well.. I come up with the same thing, but usually when lots of clothes with alpha textures are put on top of the other.

Rosen Janus added a comment - 15/Oct/07 06:44 AM
one on top of each other^ Sorry for that typo.

Seg Baphomet added a comment - 17/Oct/07 08:45 AM
I've seen this a few times. slviewer seems to composite clothing layers in OpenGL then reads the texture back so this is probably a bug relating to reading textures back from OpenGL. Which is something not often done and is generally discouraged, as it is a highly un-optimal path in most hardware. Thus it is also likely to be a not very well tested path in most drivers.

Avatar texture compositing really ought to be done in software using Cairo.

FTW Wakowski added a comment - 16/Feb/08 06:30 AM
I had the same problem. my skin was going all black or some parts of it. i could only wear certain clothes&skins. after i changed my graphics settings(not in SL) it was fixed and didnt have any problems since. If you got ATI video card, go to ATI catalyst settings and make sure u have the following setup ;

SMOOTHVISION:Anti-Aliasing = use application setiings, filter=box
Enable Adaptive Anti Aliasing= slider is on quality
Antisotropic filtering = use application settings
Catalyst A.I = Disable Catalyst A.I is unchecked.slider is on standart
open gl settings= triple buffering is checked, force 24 bit is unchecked, support DXT formats is checked

good luck!

I don't know if it's the same bug but I encountered some strange black dots flickering on my avatar (see picture 4.).

I also have this problem when I wear black boots. The boot base turns my entire legs black. Nothing works to fix it (rebaking, editing appearance, switching boots, etc)

I have had the black stripes problem for a long time but recently a strange double face morph has occured. A friend logged on as my avi and rebaked me.....cured...but now i cant rebake myself...will return me to a corrupt state and i can not change skin, shape or any clothing either...so im cured but stuck in this avi forever...or until SL assign it some importance....also i have had two completly different graphics cards during this depressing time...same prob with both

Tiff Trommler added a comment - 03/Aug/08 10:02 AM
This started happening to me just yesterday (Sat, Aug 2nd, 2008), and just after installing a new nVidia graphics driver. At first I was sure it was just me and my graphics. But then I asked others, and they see exactly the same thing I do! It only happens with certain clothing. For example, I wear some knee high socks which I have worn many times before, and which have full permissions to mod, and now instead of knee highs, they look like wool pants (I'll try to add an image to show you)! I tried to mod the socks, but nothing changes it back. Also, some shoe bases which are black now make my entire lower torso black! One last thing, my skin is modible, and now when I put nail polish on, my entire upper torso goes the colour of the nail polish! And again, before yesterday I had worn and done all of this before.

Sugarcult Dagger added a comment - 05/Aug/08 05:40 AM
I'm having the same prob, started about 8/2/08, when I put on shoe/boot bases and jacket layers, again not all will do it, but when the shoe/boot base will do it i get black skin from the waist down as skins are in sections, jacket layer is the neck down, arms and all, I had a friend watch to see if she saw anything and she said nothing happened that she could see but I saw the change so it would be a local prob, I have reverted back to older clients with the same result, as 1.20.15 sucks for me, I use RC14 as it is stable for me, I tried rebaking, Character Tests on the advanced menu and the result should be everything flies off you and back into your inventory and you are a noob again lol, shape, skin all that, when I tried it nothing happened, I went out on the beta grid to see if the prob carried over and I was fine at the start, with the last stored image but when I did a rebake everything updated and all but my boots turned gray and stayed that way, not just skin, jeans also and removing them had no effect, support is trying but so far it's been kinda after the fact but they are trying, so till I get a fix I just go through my inventory 'till I find something i can wear, I even created a new account to use as a test/control and I did find out it's what you wear not your avatar as the things that turned me black also turned the test one black and the only place it had been is my home and was created after the prob started my alts have the prob also but it effects each in a different way and I have another premium account that has no probs so far.

Sugarcult Dagger added a comment - 05/Aug/08 05:49 AM
something I forgot was that the jacket layers and some other things have reverted back from changes I made to them and when I try to change them back the sliders have remained the same and when I move them there is no movement on the jacket layer and they also will turn things black

1.20.15 seems even worse for bits of the GUI (most notably the chat window and map) showing up on my avatar.

So far, rebaking has fixed it. (Appearance mode doesn't, though)

I wanted to add that others can see the black, my friend had thought it was just the long socks i was wearing, I just happened to have black ones on, I have also read where others have fixed this problem by reverting back on their display drivers, for me I had the same display driver before this problem happened and made no upgrades, what I am wearing still looks like the cause of the problem and it's all the cool stuff go figure lol, I reverted back to 1.19.5 and no change on any of the av's, my new "test" av is a different story this one has a black stripe half way down the leg, waist to about knee, looks like the seam split open, and black under the arm where it comes together with the upper body section, this will not go away, I have tried switching what i wear, changed skins, shapes even eyes and hair, never know, bought brand new quality skins/shapes, none makes it go away on this one and this account was created after my others had the problem, I was able to get a character test to work, put everything back on, as soon as I put a boot base on that had caused a problem, I was black, tried rebaking several times, in different places on the grid no change, also I have been getting the texture of the boot base, like the black, if it has a different one, support can't do anymore they informed me, hopefully the dev's can come up with something.

Tiff Trommler added a comment - 15/Aug/08 08:26 PM
Hi!

Tiff here again. I wanted to add a comment (and new picture) that may help whenever somebody gets around to trying to fix this horrible bug!! Using one of the editable garments that causes the problem, I noticed that the texture does NOT have a totally transparent background, and instead only those areas the designer thought may show up on an AV were made transparent. Thus, when this bug occurs, I get the "other parts" of the background drawn on my body!!

Please see the graphic above (me in Edit Appearance mode), and you might be able to see the texture that was selected. You can see that some of the background is transparent, and other bits have some kind of "copyright" graphic that shows up on my feet. By the way, in this shot, I am only really wearing a pair of bikini bottoms, and a jacket! The "leggings" are NOT worn, and neither are the "socks".

Tiff

Hi, after weeks of trying fixes that have resolved others problems like this it looks like i have resolved this issue for myself, my display driver had started crashing alot, so i found a newer driver, installed it, but still crashed so i went back 3 drivers and the crashing is under control at this point, so as others have upgraded/downgraded drivers with good results i tried some of the things that had turned black or 2 tone and they were ok, some had 2 b rebaked but so far things r going back 2 normal, i still have more 2 test as i have a few alts, before i'll say it is resolved 4 me, but it looks good, what i found is you have 2 downgrade the drivers until the problem reverts back 2 normal, when i tried this fix before i just went one driver in each direction, upgrade you don't have much choice, but downgrade you do, so give it a try and see what happens, can't hurt, can't get any blacker,so now i have a crashing issue 2 deal with, had the same problem with 1.90 as did others with NVIDA drivers, here is my environment.

I experienced this bug for the last couple of days. I would get black body parts (and sometimes extended-looking meshes) beyond the edges of shirts and pants my avatar wore that included alphas in their textures. It didn't occur with clothes that didn't have alphas, at least during my testing. I'm only using one monitor. I spent a couple of hours yesterday doing the bit of changing out of the clothes, clearing cache, logging back in, rebaking, and all that fun stuff. Tried messing with all of the NVIDIA settings. Nothing helped.

However, over the weekend I had installed a new driver for my video card. NVIDIA won't give me the latest driver – they send me to the manufacturer of my computer, HP. HP claims that the driver they offer is the latest-greatest, but it's from 2006. Too old to run another program I needed to run. So I went and got the actual latest driver from a 3rd party site, http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/. The version was 177.98. Installing it involved use of their modified .inf file. It ran everything great, but then I ran into the black feet issue in SL when I changed clothes. So I tried rolling back my driver, but that didn't work correctly and I didn't bother logging into SL! Instead, I installed an earlier version of the 3rd party driver, 177.83, because I was aware that the previous one I'd tried was based on a beta driver from NVIDIA. That one did not fix the black feet issue, despite the usual cache clearing and rebaking and all that.

So, I went and got yet another 3rd party driver from the same site. This time I chose one that did not require a modified .inf. Also, this time I actually unistalled the previous driver and disabled my antivirus software while installing the new one, version 176.37. When I logged into SL using it, after clearing cache yet again and rebaking, the problem appears to be gone – I can wear clothing with alphas and get no black feet or fingers. As well, this new driver doesn't have the VERY slight flicker (noticeable refresh) I noticed with the drivers that required the mofified .inf. I only noticed this flicker with the SL viewer, btw, not with anything else I'm running. This176.37 driver seems to also be able to run the other software that sent me driver-hunting in the first place (cross fingers I don't get another nasty BSOD out of it!). I have left the NVIDIA settings at default, btw, to let the application choose its own settings.

Note that I am not endorsing the use of 3rd party drivers and etc. and if you go try this do it at your own risk!

There are some issues with the Nvidia 177 series of drivers, please see VWR-7957

In the last few comments on VWR-7957 there is a possible work around. Please test and see if it helps with your issue.

Thank you

For those reporters who have updated their Graphics card drivers to a version from the Nvidia 177 series or later, please see the JIRA Home page

COMMON ISSUES

Problems with your clothing layers? Do your pants flair at the bottom or do you look like your wearing shoes when you aren't? Please look at VWR-7957 and VWR-9358

The following workaround has been reported:

  • Enable the Advanced Menu (Ctrl-Alt-D)
  • Disable rendering of Palletized Textures (Ctrl-Alt-F7)
  • Rebake (Ctrl-Alt-R)

Please note: It may take a little bit for the server to refresh your baked textures if there are lots of avatars around or the region is laggy. Future versions of the viewer will have this fixed and not require these steps every time you log in.

This issue is fixed in the latest RC 1.22 which can be downloaded from here Test Viewers > Release Candidate Viewers

For other reporters, if you still have an issue, please

  • clear cache and relog
  • change your outfit, skin and/or shape
  • test the latest RC Viewer 1.22.4
  • check for any updates to your computer OS and graphics card drivers (Mac 10.5.6 & ATI Catalyst 8.12)

If you still have an issue, please reopen [left sidebar], add your full computer environment, Help > About Second Life, including the Viewer you are using. Please also include the Graphics Card driver version you have and a screenshot of your issue.

Thank you : )

This is February 2009. The second I put on a boot shoe base my legs turn black/white depending on the colour of the boots. Despite not updating the viewer it suddenly occured. Everything is ok if I put on a base for shoes. The second I put on a boot base, the whole leg takes on the colour. I tried different viewers, noobed myself, cleared the caches, installed a new video card viewer...no joy.
