Linden Lab Issue ID: DEV-5627

 Description  « Hide
[2007-11-28 - Repro which worked for Torley Linden on two accounts running 1.18.4 (3)]
  • Go to Search > Groups tab and look for these groups.
    Camping Warning!
    //Burgbesetzer
    School Girls Gone Bad D-Home
  • For each found group, click on its name on the left side and click "Join (L$0)" on the right column.
  • Open Communicate window > Contacts tab > Groups sub-tab.
  • Open your profile.
  • Observe: Groups aren't in the Communicate window, only in the profile.
= Expected: Groups should be visible.

This is a serious problem because aside from being kicked out by an Owner, you aren't able to leave the group on your own terms, nor are you able to change your active title to that group and share/deed objects with that group.

Interestingly, I tried to create a group called "//-'sas12", and it showed up in Communicate window as "new group". :O Relogging showed the correct name. I was not able to repro this afterwards, so maybe it was transient.

What other specific groups are these problems happening to?

========-

Original summary: Not all my groups are visible and the group dialog, (Edit -> Groups...) i'm missing some groups

i'm using the follow client : Second Life 1.18.3 (5) Sep 20 2007 11:41:23 (Second Life Release)

I'm missing some groups in my group dialog (Edit -> Groups...)

I tried to restart the client but still i do not have all my groups visible.
i tried to clear my sl cache, but still problems with the groups

When i looked at my profile, you see i'm a member of the groups i'm missing. so that's strange

WORK AROUND:

As long as this issue isn't fixed, here's a work around in case you'd like to leave the group:
Kuraiko Yoshikawa released a program to leave a group. It connects to the SL server with your account, leaves the group and disconnects again. You can download it at http://zeitenwerk.de/sandbox/LeaveGroup.zip (with a description in German: http://zeitenwerk.de/sandbox/ ). It runs in Windows XP and Linux (with mono). Unzip it, open a command line, access the folder where it is in and enter:

leave_group.exe FIRSTNAME LASTNAME PASSWORD GroupID

This program is NOT sniffing your password. If you're curiouse, alter it after leaving the group. In case you don't want to use this program, you can use libSL for leaving the group as well. Install libSL from http://www.libsecondlife.org/wiki/Main_Page log into the main grid with the TestClient.exe and enter: leavegroup GROUPNAME (with GROUPNAME beeing the name of the group). This will erase it from your list as well =)

Just wanted to mention that I am also having this problem as well. I'm a member of 23 groups, but only 22 groups are visible under communications - > group tab.

I hope it gets fixed soon since the group that is missing is the group that I need to have active to enter a friend's land.

Dre Dagostino added a comment - 20/Oct/07 03:59 PM
I now use the Second Life 1.18.4 (0) Oct 18 2007 14:36:02 (Second Life Release Candidate)

And i have still got this problem...

Ai Jie added a comment - 21/Oct/07 04:11 AM
I've the same problem.
I'm a member of the Group //Burgbesetzer
but i can't activate it with the newest client. With older SL-Client it works fine. I think there is a problem with the special-caracters in the group-name.

Dre Dagostino added a comment - 21/Oct/07 04:31 AM
I also thinks it is related with the special characters in the groupname.
however when i ask the owner of the group to re-enter me as a member it will work and i see the groupname above my avatar
but as soon as i choose another one, it's gone forever in the grouplist.

Daedalus Young added a comment - 21/Oct/07 04:33 PM
All 25 Groups I'm in are missing in the Communicate window in RC 1.18.4 (0), latest official viewer is fine for me.

Daedalus Young added a comment - 22/Oct/07 08:44 AM
Several relogs and cache clearing did not solve this, but as said, logging in using the latest official viewer did, while my list was empty again when using the RC, therefor I ruled out database problems and corrupted cache. However, I logged in today and the problem magically solved itself overnight. I'm still worried though it might happen again someday and I think it shouldn't, it makes group management impossible.

Daedalus Young added a comment - 23/Oct/07 01:19 PM
And we're one day later and all my groups are gone missing again.
Note I still receive all Group IMs and Notices and they all still show up in my profile, but at this moment, I cannot switch to another group (so I also can't update my shop as I'm wearing the wrong tag), read Group Info, start Group IMs or send Notices using the latest RC.

tessa amos added a comment - 25/Oct/07 02:08 PM
I am also having this problem where I was invited to a group and it didn't show up in my groups list so I could not activated my group tag. Also I have invited several people to our Mall group so they can set out their items in their stores. However the group is not showing up in their group list so they are not able to adtivate it in order to set their objects out. I had them relog. I also deleted them from the group and re-invited them, but that did not work either

Daedalus Young added a comment - 01/Nov/07 05:59 PM
Today, my Groups were all visible, I left one group to make room for "Watermelon Nation". Upon joining the new group, it failed to show in my Groups list, showing 24 of 25. It doesn't allow me creating a new Group either! (I'm in 25 Groups, so that would be correct, but it says I'm in 24 Groups, so that would according to the Groups list's own information be incorrect!).

Daedalus Young added a comment - 01/Nov/07 06:02 PM
Oh, and (sorry for all the extra comments, just delivering info as I get it ), on Activating another group, the missing Watermelon Group suddenly did show!

Dre Dagostino added a comment - 03/Nov/07 06:01 AM

Ok here it comes, i now use Second Life 1.18.5 (0) Nov 13 2007 10:25:05 (Second Life Release Candidate)
I have installed it on a brand new computer (high end).

But stil not the right groups in the group view dialog.
If i look in my profile, then i see all my groups that i are belong to, but not with the menu Edit --> Groups...

And it becomes very annoying, that i can't switch to the right group.

Kitti Control added a comment - 23/Nov/07 04:36 PM
Well, hate to burst the bandage bubble, but as of November 23, 2007 I still have this issue

Second Life 1.18.4 (3) Nov 7 2007 11:13:48 (Second Life Release)

CPU: Intel Core 2 Series Processor (1869 MHz)
Memory: 2047 MB
OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista (Build 6000)

Graphics Card: GeForce 7600 GS/PCI/SSE2
OpenGL Version: 2.1.1
LLMozLib Version: 1.1.0 (Mozilla GRE:1.8.0.12_0000000000)

Any clue at all to what this problem is would be a great help

I can access all my groups except one, and wouldn't you know that is the group that I need to switch to the most X_X

Torley Linden added a comment - 28/Nov/07 12:15 PM
I posted a repro, see summary! Thanks for the comments and letting us know you are affected! (I've been hearing multiple complaints about this.)

Dre Dagostino added a comment - 28/Nov/07 01:29 PM
Torley,

For me is it just one group called Sir Malick's which is showing in my profile but not in the group dialog.

For the record i now use : Second Life 1.18.5 (2) Nov 26 2007 09:51:34 (Second Life Release Candidate)

ZigZag Freenote added a comment - 29/Nov/07 03:16 AM
At this point it seems some groups are affected more often than the others. It would be good to gather info on:
  • Does it happen always for the affected groups? Was anyone able to join such a group and see it on the group list?
  • Does anyone have a clue when this first started happening?
  • Is there a group for which this is happening that does not have any non alphanumeric characters in it or do all such groups have 'special' characters (the '-' seems to be 'special' here too)?

Questions to LL here are, do we need to gather this information or could the problem be debugged with any single example already given? Especially since maybe some groups might not want to be exposed here (while others would, lol).

If the decision is to gather this info, maybe every once in a while someone should compile the list and add it in a comment so we reduce the number of comments with known groups posted again.

ZigZag Freenote added a comment - 29/Nov/07 05:35 AM
Ai Jie mentions an older client works well. I guess they aren't available for download anymore. But I still think just debugging with any known example should work well, if this is really client side.

BTW, speaking of special characters .... while at it, any chance of fixing VWR-2930?

tarannau wollongong added a comment - 11/Dec/07 06:23 AM
Whenever I log on now, my groups tab is blank it states I belong to 0 groups. When I search for a group I am the owner of, it still appears and states that I am still the owner.

This is a huge issue as I can no longer build on my island without membership of a specific group.

Twilight Linden added a comment - 12/Dec/07 11:48 PM
While troubleshooting an account (for a different issue) which also reported experiencing this bug, I noticed that the group list appeared fully populated. Has anyone else seen this bug as intermittent, or are others experiencing a constantly empty group list?

zane legion added a comment - 17/Dec/07 01:43 AM
For me it's a constantly empty group list. I can't use my own land now, since it's deeded to a group which I am the ownly owner of

zane legion added a comment - 20/Dec/07 07:29 AM
I just resolved this issue for myself by enabling TCP port 12043 on my router. Hope it works for you too!. This also resolved another issue for me where teleports were failing and logging me out.

Fluf Fredriksson added a comment - 20/Dec/07 07:52 AM
I'd advise anyone having problems to check the SL Support Centre for clues. If you do a search for "firewall" you'll get handy pages on which ports to enable for SL to work properly.
http://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=4354
http://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=4355 for a start, and ...
http://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=3942 specifically tells you what blocking port 12043 will mess up (including teleporting)

Dre Dagostino added a comment - 20/Dec/07 07:53 AM
To Zane Legion :

Hi, thanx for your input but opening TCP port 12043 won't fix my problem cause i see things in my groupdialog
so it's not blocking at my router. It's jut one group that i'm missing still

Daedalus Young added a comment - 20/Dec/07 12:19 PM
I'm a member of 25 Groups, and apart from the time a Group didn't appear after just joining, I've occasionally seen the entire list empty. Sometimes a relog fixed, sometimes it didn't, always tried relogging in empty regions (such as Aswan) too.

matias carter added a comment - 28/Jan/08 03:12 PM
I'm having problems too, i created a group and i just realized it doesnt appear anymore, not on the group list nor on search, but, if i try to create it again, it tells me it already exists.

Alison Alena added a comment - 30/Jan/08 05:53 PM
I had a group that never showed up in the groups list. I traced the problem down to the fact that i had no powers in that group. I've attached a patch that fixed the problem for me.

Twilight Linden added a comment - 05/Feb/08 11:21 PM
Same issue for Mac.

I am having this issue with the group Andi Defiant Fanclub.

Zola Darwin added a comment - 26/Feb/08 05:56 PM
i (and at least 2 others) are having the same issue with the group FRANCE*FRENCH
it's a fairly spammy group and not being able to LEAVE it is a bit annoying--moreover, the owners haven't logged into SL for over 8 months and notecards requesting removal sent to the the officers and the few members allowed to remove people from the group have gone unanswered

Torley Linden added a comment - 27/Feb/08 03:20 PM
Hmmm, this bug is noted as being fixed in the 1.19 Release Candidate – can you please try it and report back if it's still a problem? http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/02/26/new-release-candidate-viewer-1190-rc3-available/

Blaupunkt Vandeverre added a comment - 29/Feb/08 06:53 AM
Torley,

Still happens with Second Life 1.19.0 (4) Feb 26 2008 16:38:47 (Second Life Release Candidate)

Is there any work around to silence a group?

Thanks!

I just started having this problem with one group over the weekend.. with clients:
Second Life 1.19.0 (5) Feb 28 2008 17:18:12 (Second Life Release)
Second Life 1.19.1 (4) Mar 28 2008 13:54:38 (Second Life Release Candidate)

(First noticed with the RC)

No special names in the group name, with ~400 members.

I see the group when I view my profile, and search for it, but not on my Groups list nor Contacts/Group list.

In addition, if I view the group info through my Profile, the Notices tab is "dimmed out" (can't click it), and there is no button to leave the group. So it seems I can't leave the group even if I wanted to.

Update on this.. I had the group owner kick me from the group, I rejoined, and still noticed the same issue.

Now I recently created a new group (not even thinking about this issue) then suddenly the group I had been having problems with suddenly appeared in my groups list, and the other problems disappeared.

It would be interesting to know if others, who are having this problem, fixed it by creating a new group

Fuuu Allen added a comment - 13/Apr/08 03:07 AM - edited
Same Problem here.

Im member of 2 groups - "Jewells update group" and "SLstar.de". Both groups are shown in my "Profile"window, but not in the "Contracts>Groups"-Window. The counter in the Groups-Window is correct, only the list of the groups is incomplete.

Environment: Second Life 1.19.1 (4) Apr 2 2008 11:59:37 (Second Life Release)

Running SL with a new windows user (with empty application-directories, cache, settings etc.) does not solve the problem.

Please fix this problem asap.

Same issue here on mac powerbook. I can't access groups and group land (especially on peak time periods during the afternoon SLT). What also happens when landing in a sim giving such issues on login is a message on the land description saying "info unavailable until server update" or something along those lines.

I'd like to be able to control my assets 24/7, not only 4/7, please.

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 14/Apr/08 04:50 PM - edited
Looks like the summary of SVC-2168 contains a workaround:

"i belong to a group that appears on the web site (group land, under the account page), and also in my profile. but it doesn't show up on the group listing under contacts.

however, it did appear when i was given a different role.

steps i took:

  • an officer invited me
  • i accepted the role, and got the confirmation
  • did not appear in list
  • officer removed me from group and re-added me. still did not appear
  • officer promoted me to a different role, and it did finally appear."

Inari Itano added a comment - 26/Apr/08 09:04 AM
Could this problem be caused by having been assigned a group role without any ability? See VWR-6889

Geraldine Giha added a comment - 26/Apr/08 09:18 AM - edited
Harleen Gretksy noticed that an issue I reported (VWR-6889) might be related to this one. It sure does look like it. Can someone who is affected by this check to see if the role they have within the invisible groups has 0 abilities (i.e. all abilities are unchecked)?

I noticed that this problem occurs when you have been assigned a role within the group without any abilities. If this is indeed the cause of the problem, you can fix it by adding an ability to the role. In other words...group owners shouldn't be so paranoid and at least assign some ability!

Fuuu Allen added a comment - 29/Apr/08 07:18 AM
Confirm (VWR-6889) - I checked all of my groups and in the 2 with the problem my role has no abilities. Together with one group-owner one role was changed to a "dummy" ability (voting and flying). After this the group was listed in the group-window and I was able to leave the group.

Augren Ferguson added a comment - 07/May/08 01:22 AM
Having the same problem with just one group, SLDEV. Would be extremely useful to be able to open conversations in that group, with this issue I have to bother other people to do it for me. Looking forward to a quick fix

deltango vale added a comment - 07/May/08 05:54 PM
There is another side of this problem. Some group owners use this bug to ensnare members into thier groups via open membership, knowing that a person who joins the group cannot leave the group or even see the group in his group list. I would imagine there are complaints to LL from 'victims' of this 'trap' as well as the submission of bug reports by those who have hit the 25-group limit but don't know it because some groups are absent from their group lists. All the more reason to fix this bug asap.

This is an old bug that should not be too difficult to fix. For group owners reading this, the temporary solution is to grant at least one permission to each role.

Francesco Despres added a comment - 27/May/08 04:01 PM
I had this problem a couple of days ago, that's why I voted this bug. I use 1.19.1(4). The group list was void but present in my profile. Also I was not able to look at my land page (objects etc.). I think it might be related to the group problem. Logout and login didn't solve the problem but one time in ten attempts. This happened for a couple of days and the second day was really bad.

Lately it has been all ok though, so I don't know. Doesn't seem a viewer problem but looks more as a database issue.

Zai Lynch added a comment - 02/Jun/08 08:59 AM
@Torley: I just tested it in 1.19.1.4 and the current RC (1.20.8) and it occurs in both. Just join the group SLstar.de to repro.
