1. Second Life Viewer - VWR

When I try to start up Second life, it gets onto the login screen but the login boxes and the big background image don't actually appear. It's just a black. And then it crashes and asks me to send a crash report.

 Description  « Hide
When I try to start up Second life, it gets onto the login screen but the login boxes and the big background image don't actually appear. It's just a black. And then it crashes and asks me to send a crash report.

I've tried downloading SL again, and i've tried clearing my cache (I think i did it right). I still can't get onto the log in screen.

This might be a hardware issue, please tell us which Operating System you are using, and which computer set-up, including RAM, processor, and Graphics card. Also confirm that you have downloaded the latest drivers for your Graphics card.

Downgrading, as there is no indication (yet) that this affects a large portion of the user base.

I experience the identical problem. Sometimes I'm able to see the initial high resolution startup login screen but this always locks up before I can log in or change any video characteristics. I have flushed the 2nd life cache etc with no change. I can sometimes login if I change my OS resolution to 800x600 (I want to run at 1680x1050 which is the native resolution for the Acer flat panel). Other graphic intense games work (Half-life, etc) at my native resolution.

-dual opteron processors
-Nvidia GeForce 7950GT AGP graphics card w/ latest drivers
-2 GB ECC memory
-multiple raptor 10K drives
-Windows XP pro running in 32 bit mode - all patches up to 15 Oct 2007
-Acer AL2216W flat panel display (22")
-Internet connection: 10Mb/s down, 1Mb/s up, cable
-2nd life version 1.18.3.5

Thanks!

Ive read that there may be problem with the Acer Quads being able to use second life as the result of some of the companies additional software loaded on their computer. Has anyone else heard about this?

I get this sometimes too. Usually just after the Browser has crashed when I'm in-world. Usually when SL is busy (50k+ online). Using both LL and Nicholaz browsers...

Deleting all the files in the Cache doesn't usually fix it and I just can't get in... or only if I leave it ages or wait till the next day.
The login screen is black, but if you hover over where the links usually are on the top-right, your mouse turns into a 'hand' as if it sees the links.

The same. I just reinstalled windows and updates my drivers to the most recent.

AMD Athlon/ XP & Duron K7 (2.6 Ghz)
Nvidia nForce 2 chipset & integrated GeForce 4 MX Graphics
Windows 2000 Professional sp4 completely updated
10Mb/s down 1Mb/s up cable

hate to say it, i think it's the lastest nvida drivers. i'm going to try and downgrade and see what happens

thamala aabye added a comment - 14/Dec/07 10:17 PM
yes. downgrading back to ancient-ass 2.45 chipset drivers fixed my problem.

I'm still getting this error and it's really bugging me.

I have narrowed it down a bit...

It happens after SL crashes with one of those Visual C++ Runtime Errors (see VWR-2095). The next time I try to start SL (same PC session) I get this black screen error. Only re-booting my PC fixes it.

I have tried:

  • updating my Video and Audio drivers
  • installing/updating DirectX
  • installing .Net framework
  • adding extra RAM (now on 2Gb)
  • changing from AVG anti-virus to Avast
  • uninstalling and reinstalling SL completely
  • switching SL viewers - e.g. normal to Windlight (in the same PC session)
  • switching PC accounts - e.g. using OH's instead of mine; i.e. different Application Data folder (in the same PC session)
  • clearing Cache (deleting all files in the Cache folder) (in the same PC session)

These changes have meant that I can usually go up to about an hour (with Windlight viewer), rather than a few minutes before it crashes with the Visual C++ Runtime Error - which, incidentally, seems to have nothing in particular which provokes it. But I still get the black login if I try and log in again in the same PC session.

I've been messing around with Second Life for a long time without any problems.

But recently, on the 1.19.1(4) viewer, I was messing around with high graphical settings, and my computer crashed (it seemed like my gfx card gave out, rather then everything actually freezing, everything just went black)

After restarting, I've been getting this /exact/ same bug. Can not even enter in my login/password, just shows a black screen (takes a while to load), but with the login boxes visible, then crashes.

Ive done numerous clean installs, and have tried both the new RC 1.20 viewer, and the First Look viewer. Every version gives me the same problems.

Have a hunch its a problem with my gfx card, but it seems to be running everything else fine.

Intel Pentium 4 (3.40Ghz)
XP Pro, 1.5gb ram, Radeon X800
Latest drivers installed

Ive added my Second Life logs, after clean-install, and right after having the viewer crash in the manner explained by this issue

EDIT: I was able to log in! YAY!
following what awgidawda gazov said, I changed my resolution to 800x600

I resized the second life window, changed my resolution back to 1280x1024

I quit second life... and I was able to log in again! Sweet!

The Agenda for the last RC triage meeting says VWR-6674 is a duplicate of this. I don't think that's the case.

Dekka Raymaker added a comment - 25/Apr/08 12:29 PM
Your right WarKirby, it seems the policy on resloving bugs is now based on having the same word in the title, this issue and VWR-6674 both have black in it!!! 8)
