Implement an "Advanced" mode of SL that will open up more preferences, features, power-user residents, while maintaining the existing user interface for new users.
The Advanced mode could be accomplished in multiple ways, such as
"Enable Advanced Options" check box in normal preferences, this would be easily accessible to users while in world, and allow simple on/off if only need to access specific options short term.
Command Line Parameter of "-advanced" that would require a restart of SL to enable, however it would also ensure that only those who have some fundamental computing skills would be able to access the features/options. This would prevent the newer people from accessing it "accidentally" and possibly rendering their client inoperable. (See Linked Issue)
Items that could fall under the "Advanced" mode could be:
- Debug Menus
- Advanced Preferences, consisting of items such as listed in VWR-1850, or a "Polished" version of the Debug Settings list in a more GUI friendly way, without presenting too many, or too confusing options to those new to the client.
- Enhanced building tools, such as not having the 90% transparency limit, and allowing direct edits to 100%, entries to allow direct editing of a prims SetText parameter, or particle system settings. (Imagine on-the-fly particle changes, turning off particles without needing to load a simple script?)

Once a user has learned enough of SL to realize that they want access to more features, THEN they download the "advanced" viewer that exposes much more of the nitty-gritty SL stuff like a lot of the debug menu entries, advanced building stuff (beyond repositioning attachments), etc. This interface will be more complicated, much like the current interface, but it'll also open up a lot more functionality.
An advantage of this split system is that it'd be okay to add a whole lot of nitty-gritty features to the "advanced" client without fear of bloating the interface and confusing users. If users don't want all of the cruft and the entire swiss army knife of tools, they can use the simplified interface. Perhaps voting could be used to determine when features become useful enough to be moved from the advanced client to the simplified client.
I could see this being a big win for both novice and advanced users. Part of what makes SL so difficult for new users to get into is the learning curve, and most of the reason for that is the obtuse, feature-bloated interface. We have the chance now to change that.
