This seems to have been a one time occurence – Elmo's comment in IM to me:

[8:26] Elmo Dynamo: (Saved Fri Aug 31 15:24:41 2007) It seems to be a onetime occurrence.

Please re-open if you can repro this.

I encounter this problem a few times a week... Also, the online friends are sometimes not shown (the friends list shows everyone as off-line): restarting the viewer usually cures the problem.
This is not specific to the release candidate, yet, and this problem occurred with all v1.18 and v1.17 versions... My guess is that it is the result of moving the IMs and groups/friends management out of the SL core services (was it in v1.16 ?... can't remember), when LL tried to lower the load on the asset servers... Since then, groups, IMs, chats and friends are more or less broken (chat session reopening even after you closed them, IMs and chat IMs coming out of order, groups sometimes failing to show in the groups list, friends list not loading, etc...).

I am also having this issue - in fact I have not seen my friends list for many days. I log in from two different computers - one running Windows XP and one running OSX and have the exact same issue from both platforms.

This is a duplicate of existing issues... came up in our bug triage today:

[15:23] Aric Linden: I think we should close as dupe

I just had this problem right now. 30 minutes after logging in, i got my friends list back. Although it was very annoying to wait for it. I hope it will be fixed soon.

I see this too, it shows as (Hippos) Or (Waiting) and don't show up at all, after re;pg ot sometimes shows up ok.
Why does it say Hippos?
This should remain open.

This appears to have worsened in the 1.19.0 release candidate and WindLight viewers. You see the correct NUMBER of friends in the list, and clicking on one of the anonymous friends actually opens an IM window with the name of an actual friend.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Run 1.19.0.79185 WindLight viewer.
2. Clear cache and relog.
3. Open Communicate/Contacts/Friends tab. Observe that all friends are now named (waiting), except for the occasional (hippos).

I have had this problem for several months, both with WindLight and and regular (in fact, I installed WindLight to see if a fresh install would fix the problem). Sometimes I will see one or two contacts, but the rest will be (waiting) for the entire time I am logged in. I cleared cache with no results.

This happens approximately 95% of the time. Clean install on new work computer doesn't have the same problem.

Home computer:
Intel Core2 CPU 6400 at 2.13 GHz
2.00 GB of RAM
Windows XP SP2
Radeon X1300

Work computer:
Intel Core2 Quad-Core - 8MB L2 cache, 2.4 GHz, 1066 FSB
Windows XP SP2
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM, 800MHz, 2 DIMMs
320GB Hard Drive, 7200 RPM, SATA 3.0GB/s, 16 MB cache
256 MB nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS video card

Still exists in 1.19.0 (3) and RC2. And to reiterate the Viewer should be posessing all infos cause doubleclicking instantly shows the right name to IM.
