I log in in an sim with few people and prims. I can walk around a bit and use all the functions (except that my friend list is empty but I guess this is another issue).

Then I fly somewhere further away and the viewer suddenly freezes: the view is not refreshed and the cpu is used at 100%. After a while it resumes the normal activity for few seconds and again it freezes.

From now on, the freeze times get longer (often with black screen, instead of a frozen frame) and the working times becomes smaller. It is even difficult to quit the viewer.

This happens from 1.17.something in fact.

And it means that I cannot use SL anymore.

Have a similar problem in certain places with complex builds and/or lots of avatars with my Geforce 6800GT running dual monitors as 1280 by 1024. This was not an issue with my Readon 9800Pro, though granted may have not required as much CPU time. 1.19 series windlight viewers seem to have lower CPU usage and that helps. Will post exact specs later. But anyway I am clipping along at 15+ FPS then suddenly under certain conditions it freezes spiking my CPU to 100%, CPU and GPU temps remain nominal. When it resumes if I have the stats panel up it starts from 0 FPS and climbs quickly, almost as if I had minimized the window and then maximized it again a few seconds later.

My current work around is to set my graphics settings lower in these situations and this seems to help negate the problem by reducing CPU demand from the graphics card, but in no way is it a fix.

This issue lists an outdated viewer as the affected version. Can you update the "Affects Version/s" if this is still an issue for you for the latest viewers?
