Same here. Immediate crash after launching "movie to disk" and saving the video settings. This is obviously a Mac issue, and I'm none too happy since i'd just started doing a few promo videos for in-world businesses. I've used this function extensively previous to the update, and the crashing only began immediately after my update to SL 1.18.1.2.
Macintosh G4 1.25GHz, 10.3.9. I have encountered the same problem on 3 different mac computers (Mac Pro, 10.4.10, 2.66 GHz, 4 GB memory), and on a Macbook pro and G4)
File | start/stop movie to disk client seizes with menu down crashes I get the same response on the following clients: I have had the same problem I have tested it with SL viewr 1.18.1.2 and 1.18.2.0 on both a MacBook Pro (10.4.10) and a G5 desktop Mac (10.4.10) with the same result. When you save movie to disk the file menu in the viewer hangs at the down position, the window comes up and lets you choose a name. But then it crashes and nothing is actually saved.
Same problem, Release Candidate Viewer (1.18.3.5) Dual G5, 2GHz, 2GB. OS X 10.4.10
Thanks mathieu basiat for that blast of text
Same with me, same with all my mac buddies and yours, yes there's a bug and it aint apple. Although they should endeavor to fully cooperate with our beloved Lindens which I'm sure they are,... not?!! So a call to any Lindens reading this (doubtful) you should stay on their case re the Mac/vid issue. The reasons I think it's important are ; a) mainly because there are a lot of talented and creative peeps using macs especially for video, graphics and audio. This ties in greatly with SL in my view. For one I think SL movies have some hidden uses that some do not yet realize. I think the uses for SL movies could , with the right encouragement, expand dramatically and this could be driven from the many aforementioned Mac users. We could extrapolate more here but I'll keep it short. b) The other pay off for LL and us all could be simply more great quality people being drawn to SL for SL capture purposes or related. c) cause I wanna make a frikkin movie alright!!! Cheers I get the exact same error as well, but this time on a Intel based Mac PowerBook and the latest client:
Second Life 1.18.3 (5) Sep 20 2007 11:41:15 (Second Life Release) You are at 245777.0, 263669.8, 701.8 in Ginko located at sim4392.agni.lindenlab.com (63.210.158.42:13004) CPU: Dual i386 (Unknown) (2330 MHz) Thanks for the additional comments, I've gotten some emails asking to the effect of "When will be fixed?" – no one is currently working on it, nor is anyone planning to... YET.
I know this is such a pain for those of you who care, and Joe Linden recently advised that we should make a decision whether it's worth fixing or removing this. There are numerous problems with "Start/Stop Movie to Disk" beyond this one. :\ In the meantime, if anyone knows of good, and preferably FREE video capture utilities, including Mac ones, please add your knowledge here: As the educational community gains numbers and popularity in using SL for distance education applications, I would like to request that this issue be addressed. Sure we can get into 3rd party solutions, but for ease of use and NO additional costs to our schools we would love to be able to build training videos "within" SL. The benefit to our students and teachers involved in digital story telling would be tremendous.
Some other 3rd party tools : Mac = SnapZPro, PC = Adobe Captivate and Camtasia Studio I Have used these in other applications. Never in SL ... yet. My concern is the 3rd party apps. will pick up on all screen objects such as AV tags. This might not matter, but with the snapshots, they are not visible. I'd like to have similar look and feel with video so I can place stills and video side by side in post production and have the same look/feel. The Xvidcap listed for Linux doesn't work with 3D accelerated OpenGL, so I'm not sure how anyone ever thought that would work with SL.
@ETC Dollinger and anyone interested who doesn't know yet: you can use Ctrl-Alt-F1 to hide the user interface. It's what I do with my video tutorials.
@Ahlan Oh: Many machinimatographers prefer FRAPS on Windows; I'm not well-versed in Windows and Linux tools (yet). @Gigs Taggart: Feel free to amend resources and correct errors, you're great at that! Ctrl-Alt-F1 is Client menu > Rendering > Features > UI.
Still not fixed in the latest upgrade.
Yes, I can use third-party software, but I'd really like to be able to just use my Mac! Like a few others, I am often demonstrating SL in an educational setting, so this is a bit awkward. Hugill This crash consistently happens on all three Macs I have, different configurations of hardware. Movie capture crashes the client 100% of the time once you select the Save button. VERY disappointing. I'm guessing movie capture will disappear from the Mac client.
> ...could you please use the public jira system available at
> http://jira.secondlife.com The issue continues to be present in v 1.18.4.3, the latest version. Could someone PLEASE fix this!! _AO Seeing as Torley is glancing in now and again, let me add my own slant on why this fault needs repairing.
My university runs two islands, one for teaching and learning and one for its general marketing purposes. Under both headings we need to be able to capture footage inside SL for subsequent use both within and without. It is frequently inconvenient to crank up a PC when we're online and networked on our Macs, not all of which have Leopard/BootCamp. I'm not saying that the educational applications of SL are any more important than the entertainment ones; the problem should be repaired for everyone's benefit. But, at a time that you chaps in Linden are seeking to expand the educational and corporate side of SL, it's something you need to give priority to. My own university is re-evaluating what its getting from SL and I'm increasingly an isolated voice in arguing for its merits: its advantages over VIPER and other e-learning media; its fantastic potential for Alumni funding campaigns; to give just two example. Best, Christi I am teaching a Theatre Technology course in the spring, and was counting on the movie capture function as an alternative for students who might not own their own camcorders. Having this inexpensive way of making films (and a way of marketing what we do in SL for education) seemed like a good idea. I would love to see the function restored.
Same trouble here. Core2Pro 10.4.8. I want to get into Macachima, or what ever its called. Bought a path camera tracker thing in sl all ready to go. Mine dosn't crash the minute i hit 'make movie', it at leasts gives me a qicktime pop up asking what settings/codec to use, always crashes choosing default h264, maybe a quicktime prob. Havnt bothered to work my way through the list of all quicktimes options yet. Some have suggestd using a screen capture tool like Snapz, dont how this would work without being extremely clumsy. Viewing sl at full screen, disabling all huds, but if Snapz is the front most app that is running, how would you operate you sl actors if sl is the background app.
Oh and a couple of versions/months ago it did work for me ut it had an anoying black bar up the right and bottom sides/edges. But the quality of the actual actors/scenes was fine. So it is doable, just a matter of a little reverse engineering.
Voice works fantasticly in sl. I love the fact you can be standing in a room of crowded people and it sounds like your in a busy pub somewhere, with everyone talking over the top of one another. Much more real time conversational than the walky talky style of things like Eluminate. Maybe one day in tne future someone will make a hUD attachment like a box or something on your head that will stream your webcam to it for meetings. Actually you can probably do that already. But the ability to film actors/avs must be resolved, it opens up a world of possibilities for edutainment. especialy as the graphics and broadband speeds improve. Multimedia Hax,
SnapZ on the Mac or FRAPS on the PC work in the background, you don't see it. Video capture is seemless, not clumsy at all. View Torley's tips and tricks (like hide SL interface). Its more an issue of being a savy SL user. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlX7-OfTMz0 Just wanted to add that there s same problem in Intel Mac Tiger 10.4+ too.
This error occurs on my G4 PowerMac, Core2Duo (Macbook Pro) and G4IMac. In both the regular client and the windlight client. I get as far as selecting where to save the file too. I have reported the error each time it crashes, nothing seems to happen. Mind you the client crashes so often I am getting very weary about it. (windlight seems better).
Only just noticed Tory lindens comment that no one is planning to do anything about this. I am quite shocked about this. Thanks for his honesty here but... I have tried to use this in a business setting as well as socially. I was wanting to demonstate various uses of virtual worlds but SL fell down here - it did not look good!
Fails under the newest client, under the release candidate, AND under Windlight First Look, as of 12/21/07, on a quad-core Mac Pro, OS X Leopard, and the ATI 512 MB VRAM video card.
Torley, the very idea that no one at LL thinks this is worth fixing is utterly APALLING! Come on now. I have University clients who have all-Mac instruction labs, and who want to capture movies of their in-world lectures, for later replay by students. Educators, especially, NEED this video capture capability! You think it is acceptable to blow off the needs of Ivy League Universities? I don't. I'll look at those other options, but LL REALLY needs to fix this! Telling us that you can't use a function that is SUPPOSED TO BE THERE, and that you have to bail from whatever you were doing and set up some 3rd-party solution is a really poor response! I'm certainly not looking forward to telling my clients that LL doesn't think their needs are worth addressing. Bumping up to major, since this is a rather big loss of function (I was thinking to put it at critical like all the other crashes, but I can't actually reproduce a crash).
Yes, it is a rather big loss of function. Half my LJ friendslist might be paying residents of SecondLife by now if I could simply record a video to put in my blog. My copy of Final Cut Studio crawled out onto the desktop just to get away from the SL icon.
Torley and SL
I recently re-joined SL for the purpose of utilizing this platform to present to 500 of my company's client's in an up coming Financial conference. I am Product Manager for a large software firm and decisions in the real world on whether to dedicate resources to a fix or issue are done with a business case. From these posts and the financial benefit, I'm not at all sure why there is even a question on whether you fix the movie to disc option or not. While there have been a lot of negative posts concerning creative freedom and banking in SL recently, IBM's commercial is totally off base and now we know why IBM is never an innovator. SL has been a wonderful learning opportunity and I believe it will be the leader in the chat world and IM in years to come. Just as the iPhone will not change the world overnight, it has forced everyone to follow in Apples footsteps. Keep up the great work and please reconsider fixing this important business tool so all can benefit from it. Thank you for leading innovation! I know it's been a long ride here, but I just wanted to share that our Resident Experience Team examined this closely and we've decided to remove the built-in movie recorder. Yes, I know the sadness this will result in, so thanks for sharing your perspectives, and I'll explain why:
That built-in movie recorder has existed for several years, and was included during a time when words like "machinima" were but an inkling in their creators' minds. The availability of external tools and resources was frankly scarce, and so, the SL recorder found greater utility. Over time, things have changed a lot. And now, there are many 3rd-party tools that are clearly better. And I don't mean that as a vague abstraction, but looking at machinima, video tutorials, screencasts, and other recorded SL works, many of our Resident creators – beyond the scope of this issue – already use external recording apps for very good reasons, be they superior codecs, more reliable/flexible capture, etc. It's very common (join inworld filmmaking groups and ask around!). It's true there's some cases in which it's more practical, compatible, and integrative to include features in Second Life, but in light of those examples, this isn't one of them. Thus, those who don't know yet about the options they have should know, so they can be empowered! I don't think there's enough awareness of these tools, including FREE ones. So I'd recommend trying out several, seeing what works best for you, then sharing that knowledge. Again, I encourage looking at: » http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Movie_Recording This is another good community-driven resource: » http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Machinima If you're on Windows, I certainly encourage checking out http://www.wegame.com To give further context, here's my step-by-step process for creating video tutorials, I hope it's of help to the curious: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Torley_Linden/Vidtut_process Also, since our viewer is open source, OS contributors are welcome to craft amazing ways to integrate Second Life closer with 3rd-party tools. As "Won't Finish" is not a valid Resolution (see http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Issue_tracker
i independently discovered (Nov 07) this same bug, not having seen this thread.
my ticket is identical and is at: https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/MISC-780 was closed but have reopened it since this bug is still there.... just tried to make movie today.... & my attempt last about 0.01 seconds before... crash! its quite annoying.... i'd like to make videos again someday, its fun! please add votes to mine, or these two issues could be combined into one thread or something.... not sure how jira works with duplication. EDIT Oh I see LL has abandoned this feature, which explains why its not fixed... Didn't read the above when I posted this. Thank you for posting those links Torley.... I can make movies again yay Made obsolete by
