I wonder if this has to do with the very old graphics card you're using. I used to use an MX400, but I upgraded ages ago. Paradoxically, I had some issues that downgrading my nvidia driver helped.

Please provide a log of your crashes – http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Debug_Help if you don't know how to get one.

Hi, can anybody say more about the rosolution, i can't resolve this issue.
thanks
bye!

Ron Crimson added a comment - 11/Nov/07 11:22 AM
Second Life uses its own copies of the MSVC DLLs (msvcr71.dll and msvcp71.dll in the application folder). Please check to see if those DLLs are still there - if not, Second Life will use the ones in C:\Windows\System32 instead, and if those are an older version that may be causing the problem.
It's a thought, anyway...

Lore Beresford added a comment - 11/Nov/07 03:17 PM
No, its not that, the files are there, and just for trying i removed the ones from the system 32.
But it doesn't solved anything,
thanks for answer!
=)

Similar crash with RC 1.19.1(0). The following occurred after opening an inventory folder:
  • Screen goes blank for about 0.5s
  • Second Life window re-appears (unresponsive)
  • Visual C++ Warning message pops up (same as poseidon's snapshot, #1)
  • Vista reports SL as crashed
  • Vista Event log has same message as the notification you can see in poseidon's screenshot
(nvlddmkm has become unresponsive and has been restarted)

Ya, I'm getting the same problem, I'm running Vista and I made sure my graphics driver was up-to-date and even called Dell for help, but as far as I know, this apparently isn't a computer related problem and has somthing to do with just the SL Release Canidate. Hopefully the people at Linden Labs will fix this soon, but until then I guess my only choice is to run the supported version of SL...

Owyen Chikuwa added a comment - 13/May/08 09:44 AM
I have this issue as well, I believe you only get this on a vista as i have had both a windows xp and vista and never had this problem on my xp. I have had this error on almost every sl client. As stated above the screen turns black, but sometimes it doesnt it just freezes the screen and gives the same error. I hope this issue gets fixed as it is really annoying.

Valentino Tendaze added a comment - 21/May/08 03:06 AM - edited
It's not just Vista.

I get it on XP; if you look the OP was on XP as well.

I strongly feel that this is an NVidia Graphics Card/Driver issue, and is related to VWR-2610 and the more recent 'NVidia bug' VWR-6343.

VWR-2610 describes what happens to me after this bug (and why I have to restart my PC to run SL again) - basically the login screen is black and unusable; I believe this is because the Graphics Drivers have crashed and need restarted to work properly again.

I think VWR-6343 is related because (now I have had more experience of this bug) I think the Graphics card 'freezes', as described in that JIRA, but just once before it crashes the system. Very occasionally my system manages to fix itself after a freeze and continue normally, but only once or twice in months.

I am not brave enough to formally Link these items as I am not a developer, but I hope this will help the LL Developer to find a fix. I have kept Logs from both before and after crashes if this is any help.

Two more observations on the occurrence of this bug - as the OP states, it can happen when you are literally doing "nothing" (even AFK), however it more often happens to me when I am Texturing - zooming in, out and around, and applying textures to objects. Which I guess is making my graphics card work harder. The "doing nothing" one I wonder if it is someone/something moving within my Draw Distance that I can't actually "see" (tho' I usually have Draw Distance at 64 to let me work quicker)?

Also - this crash has been happening less with the newest RC and newest Nicholaz. And I note in VWR 6343 that the latest NVidia Driver might help, so I will try that and post back if that resolves it.

Please see my comment in VWR-2610 (http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-2610?focusedCommentId=41394#action_41394) for more details of other things I have tried to fix this issue.

My specs:
CPU: AMD K7 (Unknown model (custom build)) (1143 MHz)
Memory: 2.5 Gb
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
Monitor: Dell E198FP Flat Panel 1280x1024 resolution
Internet Connection: Business Broadband
2nd Life Version: All - from 1.18.3.5 / Nicholaz BE-S to 1.19.x ,1.20.x RC and Nicolaz EC (latest)

I am having the EXACT same problem with view 1.20.17.98669 and I am running Windows XP Pro with an ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics card. I recently updated my graphics drivers as well (just 10 minutes ago in fact) but that didn't fix it. Does anyone have any ideas how to fix it?

Evalucia Smalls added a comment - 11/Oct/08 10:55 PM

I'm Having the same issue.. I start the program 50/50 shot if i can get logged in before i get the VC++ Runtime Error abnormal termination.
I'm running the newest client 1.21 i beleive.
I have a Nvidia 6600GT Which I had to roll back the drivers to 78.01 version. Everytime i tried with the newest driver versions It would give me a hardware error telling me that my driver is not up to date or installed wrong..
Otherwise I'm using Windows XP sp3
1 Ghz amd
1 G of Ram
Sad thing is i've never been able to get in world and i've been looking forward to trying SL out

Wendel, please run this test http://secondlife.com/support/systest.php Does it report any particular issues ?

Please check you have the latest graphics card drivers by either going to your manufacturer's site or by checking here

Knowledge Base > Second Life Info > Solution Finder > Technical Issue > How do I get the latest drivers for my graphics card? Topic #: 4051-3884
http://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417&task=knowledge&questionID=3884

Please see the Nvidia instructions for updating your drivers, it could be that your driver is corrupted, maybe from an old driver. Sometimes it is advisable to run a Driver Cleaner programme.

Nvidia says "When an NVIDIA display driver update is performed, the new driver will remove the previous drivers during the installation processor. Sometimes it is not successful in removing the older display drivers which can lead to display issues later on as a result of conflicting drivers. As a basic practice, it is recommended that you first uninstall the older display drivers before updating to a newer version."

One of the problems though, is that I've installed the newest drivers, the second newest drivers, and variations there of several times, different ways. (Clean OS install, delete and reinstall drivers, install over old drivers. etc) And the neweset drivers gave me the hardware issue error( ie. Your videocard does not have updated drivers or they are installed improperly) It goes away when i go to an older version. That's when I can load it but it's only up for half a monute to a minute before it gives me a runtime error.

I have to wait until i'm off work before i can run the system test. I'll let you know the results.

Thank you

I still have this problem, using an Nvidia 6200, I've tried every driver going back two years, using driver sweep every time i uninstall a driver, I tried several viewers, cool viewer, snowglobe, all the same error message. I tried a fresh windows installation, no joy there. There's nothing wrong with the card it's just on SL we have problems. This has gone on for about 8 months now and it's ruined the whole thing for me to be honest. Using a MX400 now and that works fine, if I want to wait 20 mins for a single texture to load.

Ellla McMahon added a comment - 22/Oct/09 11:45 AM
Khan, please check you have all the latest updates to your Windows OS.

If you are seeing the Microsoft Visual C++ error message, please check you have the latest version from Microsoft.

Thank you : )
