Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-51382

 Description  « Hide
New in 1.18.1.2 I've been getting very sporadic freezes that seem to tie up all of Xorg for about 20-30 seconds, then everything returns to normal.

This is with the Nvidia proprietary driver with GeForce 7600 GT. Didn't happen before this version.

Rogier on the sldev mailing list reports this also.

Anything on the console/logs to indicate what it's doing during this time?

Gigs Taggart added a comment - 06/Aug/07 11:54 PM
Nope, no messages that seem to indicate what's happening. It's so sporadic I don't know if I can get a fast timers either.

Check out the related bug on apparently Windows. This might not be a Linux-specific thing.

also happens with intel 945GM, except it didn't return to normal

I think I saw this a few times.

I'm also noticing 1.18.1.2 seems to like to go haywire after being in a busy area for a few minutes, eating all ram, wedging up the machine real good swapping to death for 5+ minutes, usually resulting in your connection timing out. When this happens the mouse still moves though, this might be something different. It does make 1.18.1.2 rather unusable though, 1.18.0.6 would go through periods of heavy swap in busy areas, but was never this bad.

this happens here too, i think after 1.18.1.2 release

ubuntu 7.04
xorg 7.2-0ubuntu11

note i always run the client with this line commented out in the secondlife script:
#export LL_GL_BASICEXT=x

Importing this and related issue for Voice Team to check out further – I've had freezing on Windows.

Soft Linden added a comment - 15/Aug/07 10:09 AM
I've observed it on Mac as well, even without voice enabled.

I've had a freeze (10-20 seconds) today in the debugger. From what I saw on the stack, the viewer was deleting motion elements from a list. I could not look at the details but it was motion related.

What I was doing at that time (dunno if that makes a repro) was that I was in edit-appearance mode for a long time (20-30 minutes), uploading textures for a skin, trying them, editing in photoshop, uploading again, trying etc. etc.. The freeze happened when I got out of edit appearence.

well, i was wrong about voice, but this is what is happening in the log when it freezes:

2007-08-18T16:43:38Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 5756 expecting 5715 from 69.25.104.64:12035
2007-08-18T16:43:51Z INFO: checkPacketInID: packet_out_of_order - got packet 6565 expecting 6059 from 69.25.104.64:12035
2007-08-18T16:43:53Z INFO: idle: Unknown object updates: 5

and unfreezes:

2007-08-18T16:43:57Z INFO: deleteCachedImages: Clearing Static Textures KB GL:3840KB TGA:193KB

don't know if that helps, but there it is...

The following line in the startup script fixed the problem for me:

export LL_GL_BLACKLIST=l

Successfully tested with two different systems:

Intel Pentium 4 2.80C
Intel 865PE, 1 GB RAM
ATI Radeon X800 GT (256 MB, AGP)
Ubuntu 7.04

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
Intel P35 Express, 2 GB RAM
Nvidia GF 7900 GS (512 MB, PCIe)
Ubuntu 7.04

I too, see this short-term freeze in WindowsXP. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7300/256MB. The viewer locks up, cursor disappears, comes back after 10-20seconds, estimated, tho never actually timed it..

Gigs Taggart added a comment - 05/Sep/07 01:58 PM
I'm not seeing this nearly as much in the RC 18.3

Attached a partial viewer log of this happening to me earlier this evening on a custom-built 1.18.5 (0) viewer. I've snipped some chunks that weren't related, or were just a flood of similar messages.

Right before the freeze, I was IMing in an area I had been standing in for at least 10 minutes prior.

During the freeze, all X apps were non-responsive, including the window manager. It lasted about 2 minutes, by which time I had lost the connection to the grid. I'm not sure if this is cause or effect, but the log shows a lot of asset-related network messages around the time of the freeze.
