I am having this same problem. Anyone have any ideas?

Celierra Darling added a comment - 05/Aug/07 02:38 PM
Perhaps this was caused by the slow-down-several-animations-by-half patch?

Celierra Darling added a comment - 05/Aug/07 02:38 PM
My bad - that patch was never applied.

This happens in sims that are lagging bad, I would suggest trying in a low lag sim and noting whether the same problem appears. Although with SL lagging badly in general right now that most likely, could be the cause.

Milla Michinaga added a comment - 07/Aug/07 08:13 AM
This is happening at my home, on an empty sim. Also I did not have this problem until the latest 18.1.2 release.

Lex Neva added a comment - 07/Aug/07 09:34 AM
I don't think this is a lag issue at all. I think it might have to do with the option to disable camera movement in appearance mode.

Milla Michinaga added a comment - 08/Aug/07 07:43 AM
Thanks for the input Lex. I followed your suggestions and I tried disabling and abling the camera options in Preferences/Input & Camera/Camera Options in all possible variations with no luck...sigh....

Kiwini Oe added a comment - 14/Aug/07 04:39 PM
I have the problem if I choose "Appearance..." from the pie menu. However, if I go to the Edit menu and select "Appearance..." it usually works. Occasionally Edit menu > Appearance... still gives me the 3/4 from behind view, but then doing it again sets it right. Sometimes a change of camera view after an Appearance makes it fail, but then another attempt sets it right. Sometimes doing nothing for a minute then trying Edit > Appearance... fails, but doing it again (or maybe a third time) sets it right.

I really am trying to find a repeatable pattern, but I at least can work around it with seeming reliability.

Milla Michinaga added a comment - 22/Aug/07 06:08 AM
Thanks for the tip Kiwini! Going through Edit/Apparances I manage a full frontal pose. Like youself, I seem to need 2 or 3 attempts too before succeeding.

Torley Linden added a comment - 29/Aug/07 07:51 AM
Thanks for reporting this.

I've noticed this too, but am unable to repro it. I thought earlier it might be related to my Animation Overrider, but I'm stripped of all attachments and this still occurs.

"Automatic Appearance Camera Movement" is checked for me.

Sometimes it happens to me after logging on, sometimes it doesn't. I'll import it and ask our devs – but a solid repro would definitely help.

Carissa Frangilli added a comment - 30/Aug/07 11:09 AM
When I try to edit appearance, I have the same problem as reported - my avatar only turns partially and always looks away from me. It doesn't matter what sim I am in... it is always the same result. I've tried taking off my AO, but that doesn't help, much as Torley has reported. I've always tried to edit appearence from right clicking on my avatar and selecting appearance from the pie chart menu.. so, I'll try from the Edit menu as Kiwini has reported and see if that does anything.

Benja Kepler added a comment - 30/Aug/07 12:23 PM
One way to repro this (video attached), is:-

1. Set Joystick Flycam on
2. Walk avatar about
3. Position avatar back near camera and facing away
4. Set Joystick Flycam off
5. Edit Appearances

If step 3 is left out and the avatar's position is away from camera, when step 4 is done, the view of the avatar resets, and then step 5 shows it facing the camera as expected. So is it something in the closing code of the Joystick Flycam that isn't setting something that Edit Appearances is expecting?

Also note that a relog is necessary after repro to get the avatar to face camera in Edit Appearances.

Milla Michinaga added a comment - 02/Sep/07 02:39 AM
I've had no luck in repro either. One small additional detail: My av turns perfectly (from pie menu) immediately upon log-in (I usually do an Appearance as soon as I log on and after TPing in case Ruth appears) but every subsequent attempt fails as described above. Edit/Appearance still works after 2-3 attempts. Thanks.

Deira Llanfair added a comment - 17/Sep/07 02:59 AM
The incorrect angle preview windows are a real pain! It prevents the user from experimenting with the sliders and settings and seeing the result - which was the whole purpose of having the previews. It is easy enough to move the camera around to get the avatar angle you want - but the previews remain wrong.

oryx tempel added a comment - 17/Sep/07 11:03 AM
Just a comment that this occurs on Windows XP as well as the iMac system. I'm with Deira in that I can cam easily enough, but the previews NEED to be fixed.

Lizabeth25 Eilde added a comment - 03/Oct/07 04:03 AM
My avi does not even turn halfway. IT does not turn at all. I keep looking at my backs and this has started like 1-2 months ago. I also believe that its got to do with preference(camera tab) but i still have not figured out hot wo finetune it.
Even though i try editing my apperance in a very quiet Sim, i still get this bug. I just got a latest candidate viewer which claims that it has fixed all the recent bugs,,but no way it still occurs.. i really hope LL will fix this bug ASAP. Thanks.

Cristalle Karami added a comment - 03/Oct/07 08:03 AM
This was a bug that was "fixed" about 3 mandatory releases back, but re-introduced in the following release. Could we get the fix back, please? For pete's sake.

Liberty Tesla added a comment - 05/Oct/07 05:16 PM
Getting the same thing here. Avatar does about a 45-degree turn and then freezes as the Appearance dialog appears, and all the preview views show the wrong facing. Happens even when I strip all clothes and attachments, and switch to a default skin. Sometimes works wrong, sometimes right, and trying Appearance mode over and over does not seem to clear it up.

Crystall Manamiko added a comment - 06/Oct/07 07:52 PM
This happens to me all the time as well. I dont know why this has low priority. This is an important issue becoz SL is about apperance and how yu present and make urself unique,, i am New but i still have not modified my shape. Please help me...Please fix this bug as fast as possible. Also other ppl who have lots of friends,,, get ur friends to vote for this. Thanks.

Liaden Preez added a comment - 18/Oct/07 03:47 AM
This is a serious usability bug. How can you edit your eyes if you can't see them? Please upgrade priority and fix.

Gillian Waldman added a comment - 19/Oct/07 07:37 AM
This happens 100% of the time for me this way:
  • Rotate camera around to view avatar from the front
  • Swing camera back to default behind avatar view or just move avatar to have it happen automatically
  • Right click avatar and select Appearance from pie
  • Observe 1/4 turn
  • Expected behavior - complete turn

Torley Linden added a comment - 30/Oct/07 07:30 AM
@Liaden: The workaround here is to manually move your camera (View menu > Camera Controls), but I agree this is annoying and especially frustrating to those not so adept with camera controls.

@Gillian and Benja: Thanks, but those steps don't repro for me after a fresh login.

Anyone have a solid repro? I know it happens to me but I need a reliable way to make it happen every time after a login. I'll let our developers know ASAP because we really want to see this fixed too!

Torley Linden added a comment - 30/Oct/07 08:41 AM
OKAY... it bothered me so much that this is still around so I dug deeper...

I have a repro that works for me 100%. It's not the only way to do it and it's kind of brute force, but basically:

  • Right-click yourself and select Appearance.
  • Observe: You'll turn fully as expected.
  • Keep repeating these steps until this repros:
    • Teleport to another region.
    • Immediately after TPing, right-click yourself and select Appearance.
    • Observe: You will either turn partially or fully.
= Expected: You should always turn fully.

It usually only takes a couple teleports or so. See my narrated video for a better idea of what I mean.

Milla Michinaga added a comment - 31/Oct/07 03:56 AM
Torley, I can confirm that your repro works 100% of the time for me too.

Also after the first right-click/Appearance on logging on, which produces the expected full turn, I am never able to get another full turn from the pie even withouth TPing to another region. I have to use the Edit/Appearance route and repeat 2 or 3 times.

Thanks for looking into this.
-Milla

@Milla: You're welcome, I'm happy to help with such a frustrating problem – thanks for confirming! We're in the process of finding a developer who can fix this bug ASAP.

Torley Linden added a comment - 09/Nov/07 10:10 AM
Cheah Linden fixed this internally, and it will hopefully be in a public release soon (like our Release Candidate viewers!). For the technically-inclined (I know there are some of you!), Cheah found this out:

"The existing code sends an animation request to the simulator and waits for the simulator broadcast to start the animation. In the meantime the timer for the animation is started. This causes a race condition. When the simulator broadcast is delayed, the timer will end it before it completes playing.

The solution is to start the animation locally. The simulator broadcast will then be ignored."

Argent Stonecutter added a comment - 10/Nov/07 12:19 PM
How about an option to NOT turn the bloody avatar around at all, and just put it in "spread-eagle" mode.

The 180 degree turn going into appearance is nothing but a waste of time if you're already working on attachments or otherwise have your camera focussed on the avatar.

manifold destiny added a comment - 13/Nov/07 10:20 PM
Resolution says "Fixed internally" Hopefully, that'll xlate to Fixed soon...

astryd moore added a comment - 15/Nov/07 05:15 AM
I think the recently-released fix for this issue has now given rise to another equally annoying problem – see VWR-3088.

astryd moore added a comment - 15/Nov/07 06:01 AM
The fix for this has now caused VWR-3088, I think.

Milla Michinaga added a comment - 15/Nov/07 07:10 AM
Thank you Torley for getting this fixed! I'm happy to say I'm back to full turns with my arms beautifully extended.

serenity mercier added a comment - 18/Nov/07 03:06 PM
Great to see work is underway... but the problem is definitely not fixed yet! I have been having this problem for about two months or more as well, and I still only do a half (or not even quite half) turn when I go into Appearance mode - tested again as of one minute ago (3:02 pm pst, Nov 18 2007). Thanks for listening and responding Torley - you rock dude!!

Torley Linden added a comment - 21/Nov/07 01:10 PM
@Astryd: Please do NOT reopen this, it confuses everybody about the actual status. This bug was fixed by Cheah Linden INTERNALLY, and was not released publicly yet. Re-resolving as Fixed Internally.

astryd moore added a comment - 21/Nov/07 01:24 PM
Hi Torley,

I apologise if reopening this was the wrong thing to do.

However, the fix for this issue has been released (see http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/11/13/new-viewer-1185-release-candidate-available-today/ ), and it appears that this fix has given rise to a further bug. It seemed to me that a bug-fix that caused a further bug merited the issue being reopened.

If reopening is not the correct thing to do, what should I do in future in the case where a bug-fix is buggy and needs more work?

Torley Linden added a comment - 27/Nov/07 07:51 AM
@astryd: No worries! =)

Argh, I earnestly apologize for further confusion with terminology, you have a very good point there. By "public release" I mean actual, final releases – not including Release Candidates. We should probably consistencize/clarify what we mean.

Looking at this closer, I think including Release Candidates within "public release" criteria for "Fixed" is fine as long as that's made clear, so people who try the main, non-RC viewer don't get confused. Otherwise, you know how it goes, someone says "Why isn't it fixed?" and they're on the wrong version.

Soooo... to emphasize, this is fine to resolve as "Fixed" publicly then as long as we specify the "Fix Version/s". Which I'll do now, and thanks again for being keen about this,

(After a main viewer release (e.g., 1.18.5 not RC), I usually do a pass on all issues fixed during the Release Candidate process, because it's easier to get them as a batch.)

My chagrin!

Torley Linden added a comment - 27/Nov/07 07:53 AM
Fixed in 1.18.5 Release Candidate, be sure to use that viewer to test, per Astryd Moore's link above. =)

Torley Linden added a comment - 30/Nov/07 10:46 AM
Fixed in the final Second Life 1.18.5 too. More info here:
