Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-47613

 Description  « Hide
From internal report:

I am experiencing a serious memory leak on a new MacBook Pro with an Intel Core Duo 2 running at 2.4GHz that I got at the beginning of this week, this with the last version of SL released today, 1.17.3. I have been more or less happy running Second Life on my previous laptop which was a MacBook Pro with the Intel Core Duo 2 running at 2.33GHz and never had this issue. This is on the same OS version, with the same patches and updates installed and, until today, the same version of Second Life (1.17.2.0 and 1.17.3.0). I also did a test on an iMac 20" with an Intel Core Duo 2 running at 2.16GHz, 2GB or RAM, and the problem didn't occur. Same version of the OS (10.4.10), same patches and updates again and same version of Second Life (1.17.2.0). Basically, I can't play more than an hour and often less. After a while, Second Life finishes slowly grabbing all available memory (3GB) until the system slows to a crawl and then crashes. I have been monitoring Second Life carefully in Activity Monitor and it just keeps requesting more and more memory. I'm thinking that the problem might be related with the graphic video card. The MacBook Pro 2.33GHz and the iMac both use an ATI Radeon X1600 while the new MacBook Pro 2.4GHz uses a newer nVidia GeForce 8600M GT. Many times, when the memory is all but about exhausted, all kind of graphic artifacts appear on the screen.

Latest update: (copied from VWR-1978 - Meta-issue: 2007 MacBook Pro (nVidia 8600M GT) issues)

Hi everyone,

I have been in contact with Apple regarding this issue. This is what we know:

  • There are driver issues specific to the nVidia 8600M GT on MacBook Pros.
  • Apple knows about this.
  • nVidia knows about this.
  • Other graphics-intensive apps are seeing similar issues.
  • There is no date for a fix right now.
  • I am having regular follow up calls with our Apple Partnership Manager.
  • This is high priority for Second Life, but there is not much we can do at Linden Lab.

I am sorry for the lack of updates. I'm not convinced this is anything more than a summary of what we knew before, but I'm hearing that's better than silence.

Another workaround (aside from relogging) is to toggle fullscreen modes. This deletes and re-creates your GL context. Thanks to Runitai Linden for that insight, and other debugging help.

Apple just released a quicktime upgrade (compatibility) that does not address this issue. The GPU seemed to perform a little better (temperature and performance wise) but then the memory problem crawled back in. I have a MBP 2.4 GhZ (full ram) with nVidia GeForce 8600M GT

As commented in VWR-1978...

Hi everyone,

There is a new workaround for this issue. Scot Linden discovered that you can use a different driver for this video card and the computer should not crash. He wrote up instructions on the Second Life wiki. Apple has not committed to a date for a fix, but this workaround should help. Hope it works as well for you as it does for me!

I'm reassigning the MacBook Pro NVidia tasks. I have been focused on simulator development and really not doing any viewer / graphics work. Fortunately I had a talk recently with BigPapi and he casually mentioned working with vendors for graphics issues in windlight. We talked about it, and he feels confident he can name sets of calls that are problems on certain sets of hardware, and that's what needs to happen.

10.5.2 + the graphics update (to get both you need to run system update multiple times) fixes this issue.

I'm pretty sure the graphics update doesn't fix the issue - I've tried using both the normal & the windlight viewer since applying the update, with the latest versions of the viewers, but still it gobbles up all my RAM within 20-30 minutes. This is on a 2Gb, 2GHz 2007 model MacBook Pro. So far the only workaround I've found that works has been to reboot into Windows & use the Windows viewers. Not good enough, sorry.

Oops - my bad. In my quest for an un-bugged viewer on OSX I'd installed the latest Nicholaz viewer where my normal client usually sat. Sorry guys - it does indeed appear to be fixed. Having just downloaded the latest vanilla version (non-windlight, non-Nicholaz), it's holding fast with a footprint around 1.3Gb after 15 minutes.

I just wanted to add on to this thread... i am a macbook pro user and i have been dealing with lag like you all have... i have debated going to a windows machine but the problems i have been hearing about with vista had me be patient... i gotta say that when apple announced their new macbook pro with the nvidia geforce 9400M and the 9600M GT i thought wait to see what others say... i couldn't wait

i bought it and let me tell you... you will not be disappointed at all! i am blown away by the performance of this machine here is the technology:

macbook pro 10.5.5
2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo
4GB 1067 MHz DDr3

I ordered it online to get the best laptop i could get and i am psyched by what i have been experiencing.... not one moment of lag in the 30+ hours since i put this machine in use. I am running at high graphic performance and last night i was pulling down about 34fps...

thanks for the work around advice but i will not longer need to jump through hoops to make my macbook run SL - wahooo!

Closing Dolfke's reopen. As reported, this particular issue (regardless of other OS X issues) has been resolved.

okay

Based on this information I am about to upgrade my MAC to

MACBOOK PRO
2.8GHz
Intel Core 2 Duo

With this graphic driver
nVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT

From what Poppy Linden is stating the graphics issue is with 2007 MacBook Pro (nVidia 8600M GT) issues and not with this updated series

The comments from Lucky Howlett would indicate that the MACBOOK PRO with nVIDIA GeForce 9400+9600m GT does not have these issues

Please advise
