I have had the problem when trying to log in after/during the rolling restart at Friday. Contacted live help chat and it vanished. I do not know, if they have done anything becaus the session was closed by them after a while). At least, whatever the reason is: the client should not crash.

The client tries to log in and crashes, when the message "Loggin in (attempt 1) is on screen above the progress bar.

I get the apple crash reporter, too and SL remains in mem (not reacting) when pressing "stop app" button.

I am trying to log in now since about an hour, and same problem persists.

t's certainly network trouble (on the Linden side) when connecting from Germany (see WEB-257), together with a long standing bug which crashes the viewer if a login fails due to network trouble (see VWR-1646).

Got it recently back working!!!

It's the not reachable DNS server.

Just add to your hosts file (either PC or MAC)

66.150.244.177 login.agni.lindenlabs.com
66.150.244.165 login.agni.lindenlabs.com

On some systems you've to restart your machine.

After that everything was working fine.

best,
mky

Setting the to priority "small", as all seems well - going by the German community (slinfo.de) and also because I have access without changing any settings (after 17 hrs

Have fun!

Folks - please remember to "unvote" - justt a kind signal to LL that all is well

resolving as a duplicate, since several other issues cover this problem

Bibi Book added a comment - 31/Jul/07 07:34 AM
The reason may have been a DNS-Problem. But a browser never ever should crash, when a name cannot be resolved. It should give an error message instead.

reopening it.

Bibi Book added a comment - 31/Jul/07 07:34 AM
Browser should not crash on DNS-Problem.

Resolving as "Needs More Info" – we know a number of you have reported it and hopefully we can repro it again in the future; is it still happening to anyone right now?

We suspect it had to do with our database issues (not necessarily DNS).

Juliet Ceres added a comment - 02/Aug/07 02:29 AM
It HAS to do with you database issues and it IS a DNS problem. I've blogged about a solution to this issue here:

http://bitterthorns.blogspot.com/2007/08/how-to-log-into-sl-when-it-wont-let-you.html

In a nutshell: it has to do with the DNS server. Changing ones DNS server to one of the OpenDNS project or Level 3's (4.2.2.2) will help.

Nicholaz Beresford added a comment - 02/Aug/07 04:44 AM

There is plenty of info about it at WEB-257. If it would be possible to alert techs in real time and not in the morning when the issues cleared themselves up (or are cleared by someone at internap who does not recognize it is affecting many many SL users in Germany), you would actually be able to look at it.

Nicholaz Beresford added a comment - 02/Aug/07 04:45 AM

@bibi: The crash is already located (I found that some time ago and sent a patch), but the fix is not in the official viewer yet.

Torley Linden added a comment - 06/Aug/07 12:05 PM
I've let our techs in ops know to look closer at WEB-257 and linked issues (like this) – thanks for the update.

This came today at Bridie's Viewer Crashes triage.

@Nicholaz: Thanks, can you let us know which Issue # has your patch for the crash you're referring to? If not, then can we resolve this as Fixed Internally according to what you know? Just ping me about it.

Nicholaz Beresford added a comment - 09/Aug/07 03:24 AM

Torley, the crash I was referring to is VWR-1646

It randomly crashed about half the time when the login server was not available (I think when it didn't crash it was the situation where the "blah blah with your network ... try to connect to www.secondlife.com" message appeared.

As far as I can remember it's fixed in 1.18.1.2

Torley Linden added a comment - 09/Aug/07 10:04 AM
Thanks Nicholaz, I've linked to VWR-1646, and since the crash is fixed, closed this issue as a dupe.

Bibi Book added a comment - 23/Aug/07 10:00 PM
On wednesday when trying to log in, the viewer crashed several times until I gave it up to try to log in. It even did not look like the crash reports have been sent.

This is the only viewer I can use on PPC powerbook seriously. Crashes that make me to use the system "sofort beenden" on a hanging applications should not be on a mac.

We're going to see who else has been experiencing the same thing – other Residents who are currently affected by this, please chime in with your details. Please be sure to provide your system info; how to obtain that is here:

GantMan, please see these articles in Knowledge Base How can I improve performance ? and How do I check for packet loss (network lag)? Please also see this article for suggestions for Turning off WindLight rendering.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your video card. Nvidia have recently released Version:185.85 Release Date: May 06, 2009

If you're using wireless networking, you should try troubleshooting with a direct wired connection; we allow, but do not support the use of wireless network connections.

This article will show you how to get detailed information about the performance of your computer and the Second Life world Statistics Bar Guide

Please try unplugging your modems and routers for a full minute, then plug them back in and log back into Second Life.

There are many 3rd Party programmes which can monitor your internet connection and check for latency. Please contact your ISP for their help and advice.

If this is still an issue please Submit a Ticket with Support for a response tailored to your individual situation see JIRA Home page Please attach a copy of your TraceRoute to your Ticket.
