 Description  « Hide

Simple.

A key that, when pressed, will make your avatar continually run/walk/fly forward, until you press the key again.

Most basic online 3D games have this. Yet Second Life does not.

If you like to fly around, explore, or even walk from place to place, the lack of "autorun" gets annoying very quickly.

Please fix this by implementing an auto-run key.

There should also be a setting in preferences : "disable auto-run if you attempt to move your avatar". This should be on by default. This setting will stop people getting frustrated as their avatar carries itself off into the sunset because they accidentally hit capslock and don't know what's going on.

Autorun: Ctrl-R.

No, McCabe. You misunderstand. This is asking for a command to make you move forward constantly, until you say otherwise.

Presumably, this would allow, for instance, talking while moving. Something which is essentially impossible at present. (voice notwithstanding)

I am struggling to see the use for this. After all, many of us want the involuntary continuous walking/flying bug fixed. Why does anyone want to continue walking, presumably the online games you refer to do not have the tp convenience of SL. Give us an example of where this would be useful, remembering that continuously walking (other than with the aforementioned bug) means that you will stop as soon as you encounter a wall or an access ban. And if you encounter an access ban with a dodgy security orb you might be flung a region or two away.

Ah, I see. Well, there's already an auto-fly, but I'm not sure how useful an auto-walk/run would be. I'm just picturing a bunch of avatars constantly running or walking into people or stuck against walls because they're AFK. Where would be an instance you'd want to auto-run across the grid? Automatically running past really doesn't really mesh well with the social explore and communicate emphases in SL. I've experimented with exploring the grid using only autopilot (the closest thing to this feature request) and it was pretty damn useless.

I think it will be better to implement the "avatar auto-following", to be able to speak walking (at least one of two AVs )).

@Elwe: I can walk/run and type at the same time, though by only using one hand while typing.

There is a Debug/Client option for "double click autopilot". You can doubleclick a waypoint on the ground and you will walk to it.

Hitting another movement key disables it.

The only problem I have with it is that it screws up your camera focus... your focus moves relative to the avatar even if you're focussed on someone.

I guess that's a bug.

To clarify once more, CTRL+R toggles running mode. The request it to have a shift key (instead of toggle). This is a nice feature, found in many shooting games.

Immediately, SHIFT key comes to mind, since it is used in such games and is close to the arrow keys. The problem is that it is already assigned to strafing (though probably very rarely used). Could have it that it makes the forward move run, but sideways not. Or depending on the first direction pressed. If strafe first, then forward/back also normal, if run first, then run and turn. But in complex situations this might not work well.

The other candidate is the NUM 0 (Insert) key. And it should have some clever checking so it would work regardless of the NumLock state, except when chat edit is open, then it would run only with NumLock off.

This would be a backward compatible solution. A better solution would be to move strafing to 0/Insert and change SHIFT to run. Why? For strafing you need the index finger to strafe left and you run out of fingers to press the SHIFT key. Using the pinkie on 0/Inset would work better. Running is mostly forward, so SHIFT key is still usable. OK, I am assuming you use arrows to move and you do it with the right hand. Which is what I do. Because in SL one types often inbetween moving. In shooting games you usually move with left hand and shoot and turn with mouse.

Well, I suppose default would be SHIFT is strafe, 0/Insert is run and there would be a checkbox in the preferences to swhitch the two. Oh, and I'd love a checkbox to reverse the direction of turning the view when ALT viewing (or sitting). I just can't get used to the direction of orbiting...

Eh, read it wrong ....... guess my request needs to be a new one, not here.

And, no, please no autorun.

I would agree with this request. I'd like to see an option where we could use WoW-style movement: pressing both mouse buttons moves you forward, pressing the Num Lock key causes you to automatically continue to walk forward until you stop your movement, and pressing the / key on the keypad toggles movement between walking and running.

Many, many people are used to this system as WoW has 9 million active subscribers; I think many people would enjoy using the controls they are familiar with in SL.

TP is not always RP appropriate. Second Life is great for RP, some sims disable fly because it breaks RP. If fly breaks RP, beam me up scotty technology defiitely breaks it.

Add to that users of the Restrained Life client by Marine Kelley can be barred from using TP, again for RP reasons. Trust me, it's difficult enough getting around, no auto-run unnecessarily adds to the pain.

Not having an auto-run means that you have to keep a key pressed to move forward. That is a health and safety risk as it's this sort of activity that creates carpal tunnel syndrome.

Not all of us want ot stand around and chat. Some of us want to walk and chat. Auto run makes that achievable, the lack of auto run makes it very difficult.

There are many good reasons to have auto-run, I can't think of any reason not to include it.
