 Description  « Hide
One of the more recent updates (possibly 1.13 as a whole, I haven't been on much during and after 1.13's release), seems to have changed sphere rendering in some way, as it is now considerably more costly to render them. For example, my avatar wears armour comprised of maybe 100 cut and dimpled spheres, this has never been a problem (or I would never have worn it), however now it causes graphics performance to drop to around 7 fps, which makes it extremely unplayable. Taking off the armour causes frame-rates to return to 30+ fps.

I understand that obviously spheres are more complex than many other shapes, however the performance hit seems to be disproportionately large, either that or for some reason LOD isn't reducing the complexity as it should be on my system, and thus it is causing the game to slow down considerably, which in turn seems to trigger packet loss to increase even when using "Run multiple threads" on the First-Look viewer.

I'd just like to note that while it may have never been a problem on YOUR system, you were probably a walking lagbomb for everyone without a top-end graphics card.

I re-counted, it's closer to around 60, and not that bad, the actual polygon counts from it weren't bad and LOD broke it down fairly efficiently, it even looks none too bad when LOD has lowered it to the lowest settings. Or it did, it now seems to be stuck on max detail, even if I turn object detail right down.

Please post a more detailed repro

What can I post as a repro? If you have spheres, your FPS goes down rapidly. This seems common-sense, but it never used to happen like this, it's almost as if LOD isn't actually working on spheres anymore, or isn't reducing them enough. Though I've seen them go to minimum detail and still lag, it's almost as if the LOD algorithm is maybe choking on them and wasting large amounts of resources deciding what to do.
There is very little more I can do to 'reproduce' this except to wear my armour, which ran fine on previous versions (pre 1.13 I think) but now grinds my FPS down to 4 or 5 fps until I take the armour off again.

Looking more at it I'm pretty sure it is the LOD feature at fault now. Still don't have much in the way of a solid repro, but it's observable in most situations anyway, at least on machines that don't perform as well, such as mine because the Mac client is so much slower than the PC one.

I've therefore posted a new bug report regarding the LOD algorithm specifically: VWR-490
