Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-48414

 Description  « Hide
We heard from Electric Sheep staff that a number of brand new users on their orientation islands are running around not just naked, but with *no*texture at all. The image I've attached is from one of these islands. The users here ran around like this for a half an hour or so, and appeared to be trying to interact with the clothing and appearance modules of the orientation.

Editing appearance does not seem to help; this is not the dual-monitor problem; and it is not a matter of people not clicking through the prompt to choose a gender which they are given when they log in for the first time.

Will attach a number of reports of no-textured, black-textured, or grey-textured avatars here, because I am wondering if they are related.

Please feel free to reassign to whoever ought to be dealing with this; just don't leave it unassigned.

I'm the short one in the Hogwarts uniform. The others are new users on STA island.

I have seen this happening to avatars that had many attachments (I've seen Torley in his Acolyte Of Watermelon avatar (http://www4.flickr.com/photos/torley/523969471) this way). No attachments showed, only a black-skinned Ruth-like character, just as in the screenshot.
I do think all these things (including attachments up butt) are indeed related and come down to an important packet being dropped. The Viewer could/should notice shapes, attachments points, clothing IDs, basically anything it did not receive information from are not loaded and request the information from the server again.

Just wanted to say that i am one of those black people and there seems to be nothing you can do to fix it that works everytime. This has happened to both my char and my sisters though she got lucky when we kept trying to change her clothesto clothes in the lib for about 30 min. all of a sudden it worked. we deleted all clothes on the char and again selected some more from the lib and the character stayed ok. My character has not been so lucky so far. Please fix this as it really makes it hard to get a feel for the game when you are all black. I checked with people around me and they see me as all black as well so it is not my display.

Boudicca Klaar added a comment - 20/Jul/07 07:27 AM
I had this trouble too for the last couple of weeks and it wouldn't let me change my outfit - all the options were showing distorted textures in my library.

Then today I tried again and it let me change my outfit - but i had to change EVERY part of it - any part left from before remained black. I.e. I had to change my eyes, lipstick, everything, or else I had black eyes and a blurry face.

My avatar turned black yesterday. At first it was all but my head, but then all of my av became black. I tried clearing cache, rebake, edit appearance, detaching all, changing skin and shapes, and everything else in-world I could think of to try. I tried both a mac running the latest version of first look and a PC running the latest standard download of SL. So far, nothing fixes it.

lordvore voom added a comment - 12/Sep/07 04:31 AM
This happened to me for the first time yesterday. All but my face and the objects I attach to my character are plain black including my eyes and anything below my neck.

I've tried emptying the cache more than once, taking off and reapplying clothes, changing my shape, waiting a night and logging back in all to no avail. If nobody can fix this issue could I maybe get enough Lindens to buy myself a head to toe suit of armor so that people can't see my blackness? lol.

Seriously though...Help! I am not a noob..it's not just them being affected.

McPhenius Swain added a comment - 12/Sep/07 11:27 AM
Ask them if they are running dual monitors... If so, have them disconnect one and see

sparkling saintlouis added a comment - 14/Sep/07 04:32 AM
All black avatar, not a newbie, nearly a year old. Associated with failure to find items in database. Some skins applied look to be worn in inventory but this is how I look to myself and to others.

uachtaran voom added a comment - 18/Sep/07 05:14 AM
Today my avatar suddenly turned black (except for the eyes - spooky!) There appeasr to be nothing I can do to fix this.

LapisLazuli Tomorrow added a comment - 20/Sep/07 11:01 AM
Same issue for me. After updating to SL V 1.18.2 (1), at home last night, all became black except hair, part of pants and shoes. Eyes are blank. Home machine is WinXP SP2, with Radeon 9600 (I think). Office machine same o/l, Radeon 9550 dual head card, running SL on primary monitor. All was well before upgrade.

Please fix this soon, because we cannot appear in public like this, and many of us have real committments in SL .. not just game. See uploaded image above.

P.S. Have tried all recommended fixes, with all skins .. all my Skin Within skins and shapes corrupted .. and these cost a lot of Lindens. Please help ...

This is everywhere and attachments don't make any difference.

Mac OSX 10.4.10
PowerBook 15"
64MB ATI 9700 Mobility
1.67Ghz PPC

They turn black, then eventually revert. Then turn black again. And then revert back to normal again. Appears random.

I had the same thing happen while trying to change clothes. The only way I could get "me" back was to take everything off, down to newb, and start over again. Hoping it'll stay, has been a day, so far so good.

Master Roar added a comment - 20/Oct/07 05:43 PM
I have read all the above comments, and did not see a couple of key points...according to others around me...i appear correct when i go into 'appearance' mode, but go 'black' when i am out of appearance mode. Also at times i will change shape or clothes. They show up as 'worn' but do not show to others. Most importantly i see everyone with blue cones coming from them. Sometimes they are red. It doesn't matter if they are sitting still or moving. But when they move, the blue cones trail them. As they sit still the cones will become less, but the more they move the more there are. I suspect they are related, but I don't know how.

I am running the latest graphics card drivers, and it is on the compatibility list. If it was a local issue, it would only affect my perspective, but it is seen in-world as well. My account is more then a year old, and i didn't have this problem until I downloaded the latest version.i am attaching a screen shot to explain what i am talking about. Maybe it will spark and idea with those in the know. I will be willing to help troubleshot if needed. Please see my account for the email.

Well all the above guys, most of the fixes can work, check Avatar Vertex Program settings, clear cache (yeah yeah I know) both web and other log out but wait a minute or so, don't be at a rush to log back (SL ain't gonna run away), also while we are here look for latest drivers (even if you JUST bought the thing don't mean to say the firmwear is uptodate) check the graphics settings on the comp (back em down if you have to all trial and error mostly).
Nextly (if thats a real word..meh!) if you still have all the nice and cripsy criter look, try a change of skin and may have to relog (this may happen a few times OK) and also check to see if your system is set for dual monitor, if so, turn it off (may need another..............wait for it ....................restart).
Oddly though my system is set for dual monitors and its nothing special, just an ASROCK 333 FBS motherboard with a socket A CPU running at 2.4 Ghz using a Athlon 2800 XP plus, 1 Gb system ram, Nvidia G-Force 6800GS with 256 Vid ram, only thing I complain about is my ISP (they rock................oh wait ................I mean SUK ) pfffft anyways the isseue is mostly I get a good success rate with just getting the peeps to check the dual monitor setup and maybe a change of skin, I guess its all just dumb luck on my part..
And Master Roar check to see if you don't have "Show Updates" on in your "Client" menu (I think....anyway its what I said it was) that will be the blue cones, the red ones are prolly one of the beacons are on "View >> Beacons turn them all off " get this a lot K ...easy peasy

I have recieved info on another avatar with this problem just occuring to their face, In this case the av is attaching clothing to her av but the shirt does not appear. then after reinstall her av face turned black.

Aeneas Kidd added a comment - 18/Nov/07 07:30 PM
My turned black when I was using Windlight, but fine when I logged out and logged back in to the regular viewer. Then I closed out and used Windlight again and right back to black. I had just finished working on my appearance when the avatar got wonky.

Master Roar added a comment - 24/Nov/07 08:06 PM
i believe that i have discovered a fix for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as the permanent fix will need to be supplied by the Lindens, i was able to solve my problem.

The first was pointed out as correct by frodo...the blue and red cones were due to me having the 'Show Updates' turned on....wow, i keep forgetting how simple some fixes are!!! 'just uncheck the box'...man that made me feel stupid.

as for the black avatar...well, it is an easy fix, but took me a while to figure it out. there is a second life file under your user name on the computer...as i am not at my normal workstation, i do not have the exact address...regardless, i renamed the directory from 'master roar' to master roar.bak and then relogged...it fixed the problem!!! there must be a file in there that got corrupted or something. this worked for a bit, then i went back to the black when i tried to edit my appearance, and change outfits. i did the same thing and after two attempts, i have been able to successfully stay with cloths on and change my skin!!!!!

i had to dig deep for the directory, but if you do a search for 'second life' on your computer you should find it under your user name settings.

if anyone has any questions about how i was able to do this, please IM me in world, and i would be happy to try and help you with it.

I will admit...at time i do miss my old black avatar...but i like my new one even better!!!!

Hey, my original character name is Alucard Ellsworth. For whatever reason my account and other whom I know have been wiped out. This is the biggest issue I can possibly think of because people I know, and as well as I have put time and money into SL.

I'm not sure but when I created a new character the last name ellsworth was missing, along with a few other last names that some of the people I know had.

PLZ someone help. This is an absolute disaster. I know this probably is not the correct issue to talk about here, but I think it needs to be addressed IMMEDIATELY.

Thankyou for your time.

I threw a new video card in today ... logged in and all was well. I went into appearance mode and now i'm all black =(

I tried several clothes, skins, eyes, etc. .. no luck.

In appearance mode, the little windows showing different parts of the body is all funky.

edit: To be more clear, it was the rebake that got me. Also, this was not on orientation island.

Zan Tripsa added a comment - 30/Jan/08 01:48 PM
Just to add to the count of affected users, since there apparently haven't been enough of us to warrant a fix over the past six months...

Black Avatar Syndrome hit me today, and I'm nowhere near Orientation Island, and I didn't have any attachments on other than clothing. It doesn't matter what computer I log in from, so it's not the client, although I rebaked/cleared cache/etc anyway; no effect. When walking around I have a face and hair but am black from the shoulders down; when I go into Edit Appearance my face (but not hair) turns black, too, and my eyes become green with an odd texture. And all the small close-up windows in the Edit Appearance window look like random digital noise turned into graphics, without even a black silhouette of my head or whatever.

Nyga Nagy added a comment - 31/Jan/08 06:12 AM
I wasnt near Orientation island and turned solid black as well overnight.

I had the same problem. my skin was going all black or some parts of it. i could only wear certain clothes&skins. after i changed my graphics settings(not in SL) it was fixed and didnt have any problems since. If you got ATI video card, go to ATI catalyst settings and make sure u have the following setup ;

SMOOTHVISION:Anti-Aliasing = use application settings is checked, filter=box
Enable Adaptive Anti Aliasing= slider is on quality
Antisotropic filtering = use application settings is checked.
Catalyst A.I = Disable Catalyst A.I is unchecked.slider is on standart
open gl settings= triple buffering is checked, force 24 bit is unchecked, support DXT formats is checked

it seems like checking "use application settings" did the trick. if you have nvidia video card you should have similar options.if u'r still black after changing the settings, rebake your avatar(once was enough for me!).

good luck!

Krystal Lightworker added a comment - 17/May/08 11:06 PM
I had the same problem with the black avatar that wouldn't change no matter what I would do.

I think I found a solution that worked for me. If you have this problem try it out. It may be I only had to do one of these things but combined they seemed to work.

First I had my advanced menu open.

First:
Advanced / Character / Reload Vertex Shader

Second:
Advance / Clear Group Cache

Third:
Advanced / Character / Rebake Textures

I don't know how well this is repeatable or even if some of my selections had anything to do with the fix, but that is what worked for me.

Hope this helps!

SL was working for a long time but then I added a second monitor. I read some comments that it could be related to that. I switched back to a single monitor and it was still all black. I noticed since this happend also that my first login attempt fails but the second login always works.

I attemped to rebake it etc. and that didn't help. I will try to rebake it from another computer as someone suggested later. I need to move my router for that.

Dolescum Bonetto added a comment - 31/Jul/08 10:18 AM
I have had the black stripes problem for a long time but recently a strange double face morph has occured. A friend logged on as my avi and rebaked me.....cured...but now i cant rebake myself...will return me to a corrupt state and i can not change skin, shape or any clothing either...so im cured but stuck in this avi forever...or until SL assign it some importance....also i have had two completly different graphics cards during this depressing time...same prob with both

jalid remblai added a comment - 20/Aug/08 10:32 PM
The problem hit me also. No fix as of yet. How amazingly frustrating this is. After about 2 years of accumulating wonderful clothes, they seem useless, I will attempt to fix it, until I either find out how, or just up and cancel SL. SL is pretty much dead to me without the full avatar experience.

Metallia Stygian added a comment - 16/Sep/08 10:14 AM
This is very frustrating.. I am a long time member and recently seen this happen with a friend of mine.. I have spent over 10k now on new skins to help my friend out. I am AMAZED this is NOT be addressed more quickly as this seems to be a very long outstanding issue? Is it really that difficult for Lindens to figure out?

I am sad to see SL grow so corporate that they can't offer explanations for issues at least?

Ovistium Boccaccio added a comment - 16/Sep/08 04:58 PM
I am the avatar Metallia is talking about...this issue IS very frustrating. It has been ongoing for months now. The required fix is different every time, but generally requires disrobing and taking off all attachments, at least making a newbie skin and eyes from scratch, equipping that skin. Then clear cache, exit game, wait a few, then log back in.

Now I do use dual monitors. I can NEVER seem to fix my avi when he is on the secondary monitor. I often can, after an hr or so of struggling, fix the avi on my primary monitor. I also have multiple computers, switching computers does NOT fix the blackness. The blackness is something server side of the game. I debate if it is a virus running in their system that scrambles or swaps textures from one object to your avi skin textures. And that I have some "infected" item in my inventory that triggers this cascade of events. As I have thousands of Lindens invested into this avi, as well as some creations, I am NOT about to reroll a new avi. But I see new avi's can get this too. Which makes me wonder if this virus (if it is that) could maybe reside both in cache of players and server side inventory, thus keeping the infection on going.

djcabello klaar added a comment - 25/Oct/08 10:00 PM
wearing jacket, the texture exceeds the size and even modified by changing the size of controls they do not save my preferences and also not cause any effect.

Sophia Tantalus added a comment - 07/Dec/08 07:07 PM
Happened to me today and has persisted on & off through several relogs. Sometimes only my legs are black, although at the moment I'm black head to toe as in picture 3. It may have been prompted by several attachments which would failed to attach (many, many, prims)- although I can't be sure. Since then I detached them all and have re-logged but the issue now comes and goes. Sometimes rebaking textures fixes it, sometimes not. Running OS X with a RadeonX1600.

Eric Ruban added a comment - 23/Jan/09 12:45 PM - edited
This just started happening to me a couple days ago. First symptom was that eye textures were not rezzing right, they appeared as static texture. Then later entire avatar turned black, no matter if I rebake, change skins, change outfits, relog, reset graphics settings, I even did Character->Test Male and did not get my skin back. Still black on black on black (if you consider layers of clothing ) I look forward to the resolution of this problem.

Some interesting behaviors:

1. Clear cache, relog -> rebake : avatar skin is back, yay!

2. Change to a different skin: avatar skin goes all black, eyes go to a noise texture

3. Rebake: back to normal, yay!

4. Wear different eyes: avatar skin goes all black, eyes go to a noise texture

Please see this article in Knowledge Base My avatar is all black!

If your avatar is suddenly and unexpectedly turned all black, here are some steps you can attempt in order to try to restore your normal color:

  • Go to Preferences > Graphics > Custom and make sure the Hardware Skinning box is unchecked.
  • If you are using Second Life on a secondary monitor, move it to your primary monitor, log out, and log back in. You may need to "rebake" your avatar's textures:
    • Go to Advanced > Character > Rebake Textures
    • If you do not have an Advanced menu, you can activate it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+D. See this article for more details on opening the Advanced menu.
  • If you are using an ATI video card, you may need to reset your Catalyst drivers. For information on how to use your Catalyst software, please visit ATI's website.

Please check you have the latest graphics drivers by either going to your manufacturer's site or by checking in Knowledge Base How do I get the latest drivers for my graphics card? ATI have recently released Catalyst 8.12.

Please try the latest RC Viewer [1.22.6] which can be downloaded from here Release Candidate Test Viewers

Thank you : )

For account-specific help please post a Ticket with Support

I also had my avatar turn partially and then fully black. As well as getting texture back when editing appearance or the other way around when going into appearance edit.

I have a three monitor configuration with 2 monitors on the card, and what I found critical is that Second Life has to be showing only on the "Primary Monitor" (whichever monitor is set to be the primary monitor / setting is in Windows Control Panel > Display > Settings). If SL is showing only on a monitor which is not the primary monitor, or the SL window is spanning the primary monitor and another one, then the black avatar problem persists.

I also did the Advanced > Character > Rebake Textures, as suggested above, but this did not work until I set SL to display only on the primary monitor.

Just to note, my whole black avatar problem started when I tried to span to another monitor and SL crashed.

Using SL version 1.22.11.113941
Proccessor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5200+
Memory: 2Gig
Windows version: XP 32bit
Graphics: Nvidia GeForce 9800GT graphics card, and NVidia GeForce 6150 on-board Video.
2 DVI monitors on the 9800GT, and 1 monitor on the 6150.
NVidia driver version: 182.08

I have multiple monitors (nvidia) and need to do the following each time I change clothes:

1. Advanced / Character / Reload Vertex Shader
2. Advance / Clear Group Cache
3. Advanced / Character / Rebake Textures
