New Feature Proposal: Time Zone Preferences & 12/24 Hour Display Option

Details:
-Ability to customize viewer to display specific time-zone in addition to SLT
-Ability to toggle 12-Hour/24-Hour formats
-Automatic time conversion with events included. (i.e. include local time and date in event or convert it altogether)

Example: With use of selectable colors, default magenta and green.
Second Life: 00:00 (AM/PM) (GMT-08), Local: 00:00 (AM/PM) (GMT +/- 00)

Benefits:
-Less confusion to European and Non-American Residents
-Easier to sync events if times are expressed in local times and in comparison to PDT
-Easier for residents who aren't familiar with time-zones
-Possible Website Integration for Events, but Automatic conversion in viewer.

Description:

Let's face it, we've all had the headache of trying to convert timezones or meet up with people in another country. I've seen it several times and here's my idea...let's add this as a feature. I think it will generally make life a little easier on all of us no matter where we are. Not everyone lives in California, nor even America for that matter.

If you feel this would be of some use, vote for it, or comment if you have any additional suggestions.

Best Regards,
Jon Desmoulins

This does seem like a nifty feature, however I think trying to get everyone to learn all the different timezones will be a greater headache than everyone getting used to the timezone used by SL. In fact, I would rather go back to SLT so that there is a standard in the world rather than throw everyone off.

@BabyDoll LaFantaine: I agree that it is easier if everyone depended on one time zone. Everyone pretty much does at the moment. However, having the option to display time in the end-users preferred timezone would be a great deal of help. The only downfall is that descriptions of events that contain time, or images, or simply word of mouth will not be corrected. The example of displaying both "Second Life" and "Local" time clealy labled next to each other for each event sounds like the best answer to the problem as Jon Desmoulins has suggested.

BabyDoll,

Well, I don't think that would be an issue because an additional idea: if you have the description next to the setting, then it won't be a problem. Most people know what city they are in or the name of the time-zone.

For Example:

Pacific Time (SLT/PDT) (GMT -08)
Mountain Time (MDT) (GMT-07)

Etc... Etc..

We all understood the unified timezone that SL had and in fact many of us got addicted to it. I remember how I began going to sleep at midnight SLT which was 2am my time. To each his or her own, really... but I thought about it and I liked the idea of having them side by side.

@Dedric, in the descriptions it won't be an issue simply because LL already has you chose a time and date, all that would need to be done is a conversion. No matter what the description says, they'd at least know the time and the date for things.

After all, I feel for the Aussies who live in the future!

I'd vote for being able to toggle between 12/24 hour displays for european users, but I'm reluctant to see any changes to the way SLT is displayed in the viewer. I like the idea of everything being in SLT and only SLT: it helps (at least in my opinion) to maintain SL's cohesive world illusion (and besides, if you need to compare SLT with other timezones, there are freebie scripts out there that can do it for you. I could even make you a HUD if you wanted).

That being said, I can see it working for event listings. They're mixed-world gap bridgers, and having a local timezone to the right of SLT would reflect that.

I've wanted this for a long time!

Technically PST is not SLT since Second Life Time is on a completely non-24 hour sunrise/sunset schedule. Only Linden Lab is in PST

I can see the point with the having the PST time at the top of the screen helping to coordinate things in a central way. But not everyone really cares about that.

Gotta make sure in some way that the event hoster is aware of what time the event will be in local or PST or whatever as well.

im for the 12h/24h option. chat already shows 24h timestamps. it doesn't go away from the "one time" standard, which i find convenient. i'm not for all local timezone displays etc because it just adds confusion. i'm european.

I heartily endorse the optional ability to compare SL and local time online. Once you are logged in it is not an issue because you can see SL time and (presumably) know the time in your RL location. However, for those of us on the opposite side of the world or who are time challenged it would make it much easier to plan to visit events (eg. educational) in world and arrive at the correct time.

there are 2, ambiguous meanings for SLT.

1: the 4 hour day/night cycle
2: PDT/PST (whichever is currently used). i use SLT to mean 2.

i regret that LL didnt use UTC as the standard time from day 1, and it's too late to change now. it's funny to see everyone who has to introduce a time standard for international and long term use chooses their local time. i blame "local identity pride" and shortsightedness.

  • LL, second life time. their local time.
  • SLexchange: their local time (3 hours ahead of SL)
  • swatch, the "internet time". their local time, CET.

SL time is the way it is so that people can easily coordinate internationally. It removes the confusion of timezones (the meeting is at 11, but is it BST or EST?).

Having the times automatically translate into local time won't reduce confusion it will only increase it. In conversation people will look at the clock and say something like "Lets take a break until 4" without a timezone qualifier in this situation nobody can for sure know what time they actually mean. Since all SL clocks are synchronized, it is much clearer what is meant.

To be frank, not being able to handle the conversion in and out of SLT from the local timezone is pretty sad.

I'm working on fixing this (see my comment in https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-1597?focusedCommentId=77288#action_77288 too for a bit more info on that).

Question: do people want to have time zone preferences just for events (such as, say, displaying local time in events as well--which I'm 100% in agreement on) or all across the viewer? I think Strife is right that in that making every timestamp local time would only confuse people, but how about just displaying local time alongside SL time in the upper right? Would that be satisfactory?

Jon Desmoulins added a comment - 11/Sep/08 07:53 AM
Actually, McCabe, that was the original concept. To show the local time next to the SL time. That would make better sense.

VWR-605 says that hovering the mouse over the time will display a tooltip with the date. If it also displayed the local time that would be great, A tooltip could be used throughout the system to help new residents. I find from talking to my friends though that the date/time issue is only confusing for a little time when you are new. Eventually you learn that 23:59PDT is 16:59 the next day.

McCabe Maxsted added a comment - 11/Sep/08 07:51 PM
It doesn't, it displays a (currently untranslated) date.
