 Description  « Hide
It seems that the application refuses to update anything on the primary monitor that's within the width of the secondary monitor.

I'll prep a video if necessary, but basically here's what happens:

1) Set primary monitor resolution to 1024 x 768
2) Set secondary monitor resolution to 800x600, place on left of primary monitor
3) Launch SL (make sure it'll launch in maximised windowed mode)

  • only the right-most 224 pixels of the application window will display updates, but the application can still be interacted with.
    4) Drag back and forth between primary and secondary monitor.
  • last frame will be displayed on application window, but no updates will take place.

Solution 1) Startup SL with secondary monitor on right of primary monitor
Solution 2) Switch monitor positions while SL is running

    • Moving monitors about refers to the Display properties dialogue, not physical movement.

Might be related to VWR-1050. Although the problem there were with the 7.5 version of the drivers and 7.6 seems to fix it. Perhaps the problem reappeared in later versions of the viewer? I'm still with 7.4. Works great.

:O

Oh dear. I have an x1800 Xt.

Kinda makes me glad that I'm lazy about checking for updates. This is really nasty..

I have put 7.6 on my wife's machine, which only has a Radeon 9600, and it works perfectly. I have not yet installed 7.6 on my computer, where I have an X1600 - will try to do so tonight and see if I can report back.

I have Catalyst 9.6 and a Radeon 9550 which identifies as "X1050 Series" in SL - no problems here. When someone confirms specificity to the card, I suggest putting a mention of it in the title/summary and description.

Viewer doesn't crash, it just sits there doing nothing- although it does seem stuck at about 87mb RAM usage.

It's not even rendering the UI for the login screen.

I have had very good luck using third party drivers that 'patch' the Catalyst drivers.

YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY.. ATI 'does not support' the third party drivers.. however, and perhaps tellingly.. they DO provide a link to them.. a quick Google for 'omega drivers' should also work.

  • advanced graphics drivers crawl deep into your operating system.. backup, create a restore point .. yadda yadda
    • you must follow the instructions with due care.. I wont quote them all here.. in essence you have to rip out all of the old driver (and its associated software) reboot and install the new stuff

If you decide to try the omega drivers.. please make a full backup before you go fiddling about deep in the twisty passages of your registry hive.. the grue has claimed many in those dark passages

In my case the process was painless.. I used the built in Catalyst uninstaller.. rebooted.. installed the new package.. Second LIfe suddenly sprang to life on a laptop with a mobility radeon x700 chipset.. made a whole world of difference in framerate and eyecandy.

Catalyst 7.7 is out. Is this still a problem? (I know there are some issues with 7.7, but if you've already installed it and don't crash, please reply.)

Nope, still the same problem.

updated bug description to reflect new information.

previously, I've had the secondary monitor at 1024x768, but since my eyes are getting more sensitive I had to lower the resolution in order to bump up the refresh rate.

/me lowered priority after discovering hot-fix.

same problem in 7.8

As it seems, the only way to get rid of this bug was to install the Omega drivers.

I can no longer do any testing on this bug, as it seems that what ever problems the drivers caused ended up resulting in a hardware failure. As the card was out of warranty, I went and bought a GeForce 7950 GT.

So I'm guessing this bug will probably soon be closed as "needs more information"

More ATi series rendering errors....

This bug has occured for me too with Catalyst 7.11 (ATI) and 7.10 (Omega).

I am so annoyed with ATI drivers right now! Running the latest main release (1.19.1 (4)) seems impossible. Catalyst 7.12 and above slows down FPS to almost 0. 7.x seems to have this bug. And Catalyst 6.9 causes 256-color banding when enabling Basic shaders (needed to enjoy WindLight).

I am so tired of trying version after version! I don't know what to do anymore! If I had money I would be getting an nVidia right now!

This issue was reported as Affects Version/s: 1.18

If it is still an issue for you using the latest Viewer 1.22 [which can be downloaded from here http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php] please

  • reopen [left sidebar]
  • update the "Affects Version/s" to the correct one
  • add any other relevant details that would help LL developers fix it. Up-to-date, full details from Help > About Second Life are very important.
