Environment: Intel Pentium D 3.40Ghz , Nvidia GeForce 7100 GS + TurboCache

Linden Lab Issue ID: SL-52876

 Description  « Hide
While using Second Life, even with the "single-CPU" trick (Windows Task Manager -> Processes -> SecondLife.exe -> CPU 1 uncheck ), Second Life keeps freezing, and running on 0.5-3FPS, when it could run at 45FPS. This graphics card uses TurboCache, that is the problem since SL uses RAM as well.

You see, TurboCache is a technology to use half the RAM for more graphics card memory. Stupid Nvidia didn't make a switch for it, so i'm stuck with it. The only way to resolve this for Second Life, is make a preference to select the amount of RAM memory you're willing to let Second Life use. From 16MB to the max. of 512MB.

Although it may cause more network bandwidth and perhaps some more CPU to transfer 3D meshes and cache files all the time to the RAM, it's much better than 0.5-3FPS and a lag level of 110% with a ping of 1,000msec due to local lag.

Removed "Crashes" component too.

If I'm not mistaken, higher-end NVIDIA graphics cards don't use TurboCache. I don't think we'll be doing this, since a more effective solution is to get a better graphics card and more RAM (how much do you have?), unless I hear otherwise from our devs... so resolving as "Won't Fix".

Tor, this graphics card is brand new from about 3-6 months :-/. I got 512mb RAM, but I saw if I get 1024MB, Second Life will attempt to use half, when TurboCache will also, and Windows uses RAM memory as well, so, nothing will be fixed that way... X.X

As well, "Crashes" occur :-/.

It's harsh, I know Smiley. For the time being, I've changed it to New Feature – others who want this also can vote for it, but it doesn't seem to be a high priority here because the limiting factor has more to do with the hardware than Second Life itself. We'll leave it open for now; others who feel this is very important to them should vote for it too.

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but isn't the GeForce 7100GS an on-board graphics chipset? In the first place, it makes no sense for any stand-alone videocard with its own onboard memory to use the system's memory too - at least not for late-model AGP and just about all modern PCI-E cards.

Torley: what about laptops?

can anyone help???? i have 4gb ram and nvidia geforce 6100 and my ram gets eaten up many times a day!! i am sick of crashing and ppl who are running less spec systems seem to manage fine. i cant find the cause of the ram filling up and am new to the world of computers so pretty dumb . please help there must be a solution out there somewhere. ty aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!

Hey Parsnip. Does you card have TurboCache? If so, that's the reason why your RAM is eaten a lot. Turbocache always takes half, which is 2GB. Now, add in the rest and there ya go, no more RAM! Same happened to me, a LOT. But, there's a solution. :-D Nvidia say you can't disable it, but you can. Just follow these instructions CAREFULLY: http://howtotroubleshoot.blogspot.com/2007/05/how-to-disable-turbocache.html .
