 Description  « Hide
Second Life 1.23.4 and 1.23.5 has severe graphics lag issues with any ATI video card. All ATI video cards, no matter what type of system they are installed in lose 6 or MORE FPS. I've heard that this can take away up to 15FPS, sometimes MORE from older cards. This issue did NOT occur on Second Life 1.22.11.

On 1.22.11, on the Laptop i get approximately 10-14FPS. With 1.23.4 and 1.23.5 I get between 2 and 4 FPS. This completely cripples my laptop's ability to play second life.

On 1.22.11, Desktop 1 (nVidia) I get anywhere between 20 and 60FPS, depending on the sim that I am in. These DO NOT CHANGE on the new versions.

On 1.22.11, Dekstop 2 (ATI) I get anywhere between 20 and 40FPS, even though this is a dual-core card. On 1.23.4 and 1.23.5, I get anywhere between 4 and 15FPS, depending on how empty the sim is.

This can be tested very easily. For some reason, the new SL seems to not like to work with ATI cards properly.

The oddest thing about this bug is that the 8800GT gets a higher FPS than the much newer ATI counterparts. The 3450 and the 3870 are much newer, faster cards than the GeForce 8800GT. However, the 8800GT consistently outperforms it in second life. This has been a serious problem and must be fixed, as the new version completely cripples ATI laptops.

Duplicate of VWR-13282

Andromeda Recreant added a comment - 15/Oct/09 08:27 PM
This is not a Duplicate of VWR-13282. 13282 deals with both nVidia and ATI being affected by a bug with antialiasing. This is only an ATI issue.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 15/Oct/09 08:40 PM
No one with antialiasing issue has mentioned they were using ATI, only the nVidia users have mentioned that.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 15/Oct/09 08:42 PM
Also, technically 64-bit operating systems are not supported.

Harleen, stop editing my issue.

This does not qualify for Showstopper status, please read the help next to the priority:

Showstopper
ONLY the most severe, confirmed issues which demand immediate attention from Linden Lab. For example, inability for many Residents to login. IMPORTANT: Abusing this setting will cause revocation of Issue Tracker access. If in doubt, mark "Critical" instead.

I'm not in doubt. this completely breaks the GAME on ATI laptops. As in you can login but you cannot do ANYTHING else. at 2fps you cant MOVE, look at inventory, chat, IM. Basically all you can do is login and if you're lucky... Quit.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 15/Oct/09 09:29 PM
Does not reproduce for me on my laptop with an ATI card, but I am also not using a 64-bit OS.

Andromeda Recreant added a comment - 15/Oct/09 09:31 PM
Then you got lucky.. Or you're running a tweaked driver or something. I purposely tested it on a desktop with an ATI card to confirm it. Maybe your ATI card has enough crunch to it to push through the FPS loss without a problem, but any ATI 3000HD series or earler, will be completely useless.

Harleen Gretzky added a comment - 15/Oct/09 09:36 PM
Or maybe it is a Vista 64/ATI problem.

Andromeda Recreant added a comment - 15/Oct/09 09:38 PM
If Vista 64 was the problem in any way, it would have the same problem on my nVidia unit... or at least SOME problem. When Vista 32 is installed its actually worse.. I just tested it.

Andromeda, please attach a screen shot of your Graphics settings window and Hardware Options window (Edit > Preferences > Graphics) that you use on computers with ATI cards, see Attaching the screenshot to an issue

Activate the Statistics Bar Statistics Bar Guide and Fast Timers Console, take a screenshots and attach it to this issue, Debug Help - How do I get my Fast Timers results?

Please close the Viewer and before you restart Second Life, please attach your latest SecondLife log and CrashReport to this issue. This Knowledge Base article will tell you Where do I find my Second Life diagnostic logs?

Thank you.

Ellla: cant do that anymore, I completely removed 1.23 from my system and i'm not installing it again until its fixed. Im gonna use 1.22.11, and if they don't fix the bug by the time they discontinue it, they're just gonna lose anyone with an ATI laptop that cant handle SL.

In the triage, Sahkolihaa Contepomi noted that uninstalling the graphics drivers, running Driver Sweeper in Safe Mode, then reinstalling the 9.9 drivers fixed the problem.

Andromeda Recreant added a comment - 19/Oct/09 09:00 PM
That might have worked for him, but this happens even with a fresh vista install. This should NOT happen. ever.

Zen Linden added a comment - 21/Oct/09 11:30 AM
@Andromeda : what happens when you turn off voice? Seen something like this on my machine. Also, are you running UAC on vista? Try turning UAC off.

Andromeda Recreant added a comment - 22/Oct/09 01:39 AM
Zen: Voice on/off changes nothing. UAC on/off changes nothing. I always had UAC off though.

Zen Linden added a comment - 22/Oct/09 06:01 PM
Ugh.... had a similar issue, but turning off voice resolved it at the time. Any chance I could ask you to pull up fast timers? Press ctrl + alt + d, and go to Advanced->Consoles->Fast Timers. Click on the words on the left to expand and collapse words. See anything that stands out?

Problem is I cant bring up ANYTHING using the 1.23 viewers. The FPS is so low that it takes forever to bring up.

Andromeda Recreant added a comment - 27/Oct/09 10:40 PM
No more info can be provided. it just does this.

Jumpman Lane added a comment - 29/Oct/09 03:23 PM
what are your gpu temperatures? cpu temps? how hot are your systems running. my nvidia graphics card was quickly running over the specified maximum gpu temperature in minutes and fps dropped. cooling my computer solved the problem completely.
