I tried to open a chat window to communicate with a group that I joined, but all of my groups are missing from my chat window. They are shown in my profile, but not in the IM window. They were there yesterday and earlier today, but when I logged on at around 3:30pm EST, they were missing.

Before you log into Second Life please Clear the Cache from Outside Second Life
You can check the Disk Cache location from the login screen Edit > Preferences > Network.
Log into Second Life and let your Inventory fully load.
