[originally proposed by FireFox Breed at Community: Vote]

Currently as it stands, creators of sculpted prims are easily in danger of having their work ripped off and redistributed freely.

If you wish to create an item using sculpted prims with the intent of having it moddable, as in being able to resize or retexture it, you can not do it without the sculpted prim image being viewable. This image is viewable on the second life intern editor at the native 64x64 rez. This way any user can simply take a screen shot of their desktop using Ctrl-print screen and crop the sculpted image out of the picture. Once they have this they can apply it to their own sculpted prims and end up with the exact same product. All of the hard work that was put into creating the original sculpted prim is wasted.

I know this makes content creators worried and will limit them from using sculpted prims in fear of their work being copied. We all know it's very possible for anyone to duplicate a moddable object in-world by referencing prim attributes or using a mirror tool, but openly exposing the sculpt map texture in the edit window is giving copycats an easy button to duplicate and redistribute other people's work.

I would like to put forth having the option installed where the creator of a sculpt texture can choose wether or not they want to allow people to view that texture in the edit window of a moddable object.

I'd say that the sculpt texture simply shouldn't be shown. The box can fill with an icon that's a visual indicator that a sculpt texture is present... or even a small thumbnail of the actual 3d mesh itself.

Periapse Linden added a comment - 12/Jul/07 02:03 PM
I'm more inclined to consider Lex Neva's suggestion to just show an icon instead of the actual sculpt texture for all sculpties and permissions. I believe that the icon is an easier feature to add, it preserves the interface for sculpties, and it requires no new permissions or checkboxes. Beatfox, would this for you as well?

FireFox Breed added a comment - 21/Jul/07 06:29 PM
An icon would be a very good idea. The main issue that I have, along with almost all of the furry avatar makers, is the preview for the sculpt map image. If it does not require any new permission settings and eliminates the present risk of copy pasting the preview box, then it would solve what we're worried about. There is an alpha channel work around that was discovered ( http://forums.secondcitizen.com/showpost.php?p=278425&postcount=36 Credit: Ryozu Kojima who posted on VWR-1059) ... But content creators shouldn't have to go through the trouble of masking their sculpted prim textures in order to hide them.

The risk of this restricted us from releasing a product with mod rights. We did not want to do that so we had to hold off on making a finished product to be released into second life. If its restricting the creativity of residence on second life something should be done about it.

From the list of people who already voted, it seems that this is an issue for all content creators who plan on using sculpted prims to improve the look and/or performance of their products. This includes nearly all of the top avatar creators.

Malluch Cleaver (Mutation Industries)
Synchra Squeegee (Syn_Squee)
Uchi Desmoulins (Lost Creatures)
Mephitis Jezebel (Aventity)
Whinge Languish (Ninja Weasel Studios)

Add Luskwood, NorthStar, and Werehouse and you have the top selling avatar markers showing support on this issue.

I myself worry on this for fact of it also halting even many other content creators as well for things like Vehicles (which some need mod so they can set the sit height) and other such things were Modify is a part of it. to have it like this would be a royal problem and yea I'd agree with it just make it so they can not be seen maybe like a screen of the finshed image or the default "X" when no image is noticable.

As long as everyone realized that sculpt maps are still easily (trivially easily) copied, even with an icon covering it.

This is no real protection.

Lavender Arrow added a comment - 27/Aug/07 03:47 PM
Anything that is mod and doesn't use illegal techneques is easilly copyable anyway.

This came up in our UI bug triage today:

[10:57] Benjamin Linden: Torley, I agree, let's go ahead and resolve this as needs more info
[10:57] Benjamin Linden: esp since we're not doing any work on scuplties in the near future

Beafox, did you have anything to add re: Periapse's comment above?

I know that Luskwood's current practice is to put their logo in the alpha channel of their sculpties, which makes the thumbnail preview serve as a branding mark of sorts (in addition to masking out significant portions of the sculpt map). I'm not sure how attached they are to this ability. I've alerted them to this discussion, so hopefully they'll speak up and we can hear what their view is on all this.

But it's true that many creators are unaware of the existence of the alpha-channel precaution (or even the existence of the sculpty copying danger in the first place). Also, it's an extra step that sculpty creators who are unfamiliar with image editors such as Photoshop might have difficulty with. I, personally, see no problem with replacing the thumbnail preview with an icon.

I never get those 'there is a way to do it anyway (but harder) so why even bother to make it harder" statements

(in respondse to lavender arrows comment> not offensively meant anyway)

In my opinion, it always helps to make it harder to steal things. Of course anything can be stolen. Theoreticly, all sites can be hacked, all banks can be ropped, but this does not mean one should not try to make it as hard as possible. Of course, there will be an amount of people still be able to do it, but this DOES make the group of people able to do this smaller. Or even, if some COULD do it, it would stop some since it will more time consuming to do it.

If one could choose: - 10 sculpt shapes stolen everyday

  • 5 sculpt shapes stolen everyday

What would you choose?

hulk ah is right. It's like saying, why lock your door, a thief can pick the lock, locks are bad, locks are too much effort, everyone just leave a sign on your front door saying "it's open," blah blah blah.

Of course a determined person can circumvent copy protection. WHY MAKE IT EASIER FOR SOMEONE CASUAL OR INEXPERIENCED TO DO IT???

Sculpt texture preview has absolutely no utility whatsoever, except to people who figure out they can printscreen it and have an open permissions copy for themselves.
