i checked that i had the right group set before rezzing a no copy item. I still got the "attempt to rezz failed". And now the object is gone, both from world and inventory.

Edit: It showed up again today. In inventory - it didnt yesterday, with relogging and clearing cache, but now its there.

Update July 28th 2007: This is still happening to people, and the items don't always come back...

Update November 28th 2007: Guess what? It's back >

Bumping up priority from normal to critical.

Yesterday my partner lost her huddles because of this stupid issue; she had the huddles for a year and a half and it was the result of hours and hours of work and tens of thousands of lindens.

She cleared the cache and relogged; it didn't reappear. Not even today.

She started reloading another Huddles and guess what? She would get this stupid issue again. And this happened in different places; she had the right group set and it even happened at our home, which she owns.

She is so angry and frustrated at this happening over and over she is thinking of canceling her account :'( She knows that even if this is fixed that won't replace the lindens and hours she has lost. She knows that for a fact because the last time she filed a bug report on another inventory item problem, that was the message she got.

So Imma filing this on her behalf, while she's filing a support ticket now.

i am so frustrated I could scream. Last nite, in the Asimov Park sim, at about 10 pm sl time, I attempted to rez my HUDDLES EZ Animator Deluxe v1.1.3 on the ground to edit some notecards in it, and received an error message which said "Attempt to rez an object failed." I tryed to rez it again and received the same error. I changed location to my home in Lutra, and the same thing occured. When I attempted to re-log the object disappeared from my inventory. My Huddles contains tens of thousands of lindens in poses, animations, and dances, and it just vanished! I cleared cache several times, changed locations on re-logs, and it did not reappear. I spent over 10,000L in an attempt to replace all of those items, put them in a new Huddles, and was angry but willing to move on. Less that 24 hours after last nite's disaster I needed to rez my new Huddles with all the things I just bought in it in my Lutra home, and when I did I again got a "Attempt to rez an object failed." message. Now my second Huddles full of items has vanished in less than 24 hours; i spent a fortune with nothing to show for it. I need to have those items recovered, or I need to be re-imbursed, this is damn ridiculous. I am out a LOT of RL money and have nothing to show for it.

Bumping up to show stopper and revising version affected

thunderclap Morgridge added a comment - 29/Jul/07 02:46 AM
From what I have noticed, if you rez something and it says failure to rezx that generally means that the system is backing your inventory up on the assest server. If you force the issue, the item gets lost. The asset server has over one trillion items to track.
Yes a better way to handle this needs to happen but really, if you have that 'Failure to Rez' STOP! Do something else.

Kap Ultsch added a comment - 29/Jul/07 07:08 AM
Same happens to me.

I stopped rez after the first "cannot rez object" message, but it doesnt help... After the next login the object is gone from iventory and the search at 0,0,0 doesnt help.

This is the second time it happens to me. Totally costs at the moment: 650 Linden.
I have noticed that at trying to drop the object on the ground no cross appears in the mosehand, if this happens i scroll the object back in my iventory to prevent from loosing it... But thats not a solution to that bad problem.

Region: Vitersonus (205, 21, 21).

I found an older post from Linden, it seems to be an older problem:

[Update] Asset Server Issues
Wednesday, June 13th, 2007 at 2:40 PM PDT by: cynlinden

[ 4:04] Problems with the asset server may include inventory loss, objects rezzed may not load and may not return to your inventory. Please be cautious about using your inventory during this time. We will update as we have more information.

[3:43] We are continuing to have trouble with our central file store (the "asset server"). We are still investigating. We will continue to update as we have news... or just to let you know we are still on it.

We are aware that we are having some challenges which may effect logins, rezzing of objects and uploads. We are working on it, will update when we have more information.

Thanks!

Beezle Warburton added a comment - 29/Jul/07 10:57 AM
Also, previously rezzed things (or the notecards/scripts inside them) have gone missing. When it's the object, it's just gone. When it's a notecard/script, it looks like it's there in the objects inventory, but gives a database error when you try to look at it.

Kara Foley added a comment - 29/Jul/07 11:29 AM
Stopping what you are doing doesn't help. The moment you log off and back on again, that item is lost forever.

This also has NOTHING to do with permissions. My home has build enabled for everyone; the only restriction is no push. However, i lost another 400L trying to rez a stand set to at least have some sort of ao.

This is ridiculous; this bug should be a number 1 priority. Who is going to re-imburse me for the 24,000 L I have had to spend since yesterday replacing the items that were lost due to this inexcusable bug. Or should I say, replacing the items TWICE because the 1st replacement set went poof just like my original huddles. I have lost animations and poses I can NEVER replace, because many of them I don't remember where they were purchased.

This ticket has been open since July 1st in critical status, and nothing has been done on this? How many thousands of lindens are going poof everyday because of this? Linden Labs, get off your collective butts and fix this NOW!!

"[ 4:04] Problems with the asset server may include inventory loss, objects rezzed may not load and may not return to your inventory. Please be cautious about using your inventory during this time. We will update as we have more information."

There is definetly a serious problem here... and being cautious is of no help... I never had an issue with this bug, but since voice got enabled and the lag is even worse then ever on my class 5 island sim, I lost a 12000 $L bed (mod/no copy/transfer) while rezzing on my own land. Who is paying for such loss while the vendor says: "We don't give you another bed, it's transfer, please apply for LL about that!"

The Grid should be taken back to no voice and these critical bugs should be addressed to now! Forget about new features like voice... This is very very serious issue... critical is not the right state for this bug... it should be catastrophic!

I've had it happen this weekend, too - I lost a table, a rug, a rather expensive and beautiful plant that I loved, and some other things. This is a huge, huge problem - Linden is money, and losing items is losing money. I don't mind paying money so I can enjoy the game more, but if I'm risking losing IRL cash I won't anymore. Please, please, please fix this issue. Please.

Kap Ultsch added a comment - 29/Jul/07 05:44 PM
I have tried something:

I rezzed something and it got lost, i have bought it again and starts SL Voice-Version. I rezzed it it works...

So it seems to be a problem between the voice and normal version of SL. This effect happens to all things i have bought NEW ( since saturday ) , the older things are currently ok to rez...

I will not buy a thing that is in a box still this problem is fixed !

This is from the official Linden blog: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/07/28/in-world-service-slowdowns/

First, the notice came up too late to help us; secondly, after all the glib statements of the matter still being resolved it's STILL happening.

This is the kind of wonderful customer service we can expect from LL

I don't know how for certain the handshake between the inventory asset server and the simulator works when you try to rez a no copy item in a sim so perhaps what I am about to describe is already happening, if not I recommend you try to implement some logic checks such as this.

1. Person rezzes NoCopy item WIDGET in sim ALPHA
2. Inventory asset server sends a copy of item data of WIDGET to ALPHA sim
3. Iventory asset server flags WIDGET as "rezzed" and user can not rez it again
4. WIDGET still shows in user inventory, but they cannont act on it and it is colored orange or says (REZZING) beside it

BRANCH - If ALPHA receive WIDGET

5. ALPHA sends message to inventory asset server that it has WIDGET
6. ALPHA rezzes WIDGET
7. Asset server removes WIDGET from user inventory

BRANCH - If ALPHA does not respond to Asset server

5. Asset server waits 5 minutes and does not receive confirmation of rez from ALPHA
6. Asset server sends request to ALPHA asking if it has a copy WIDGET

BRANCH - If ALPHA does have a copy of WIDGET
7. ALPHA sends message to inventory asset server that it has WIDGET
8. ALPHA rezzes WIDGET
9. Asset server removes WIDGET from user inventor

BRANCH - If ALPHA does not respond to asset server
7. Asset server sends failure to rez message to user
8. Asset server unflags item as "Rezzing" in inventory
9. User is able to attempt to rez the item again or whatever

...

There is only possible problem with this that I see, if for some reason the asset server fails to remove the "Rezzing" flag the item will become unusable though still exist in one's inventory. There should be an easy check for this though, if an item remains in the "Rezzing" state for a long period of time a user should be able to right click on it and choose "Force Rez" or "Force UnRez" to get the asset server to attempt to rez it again, or put it back in the inventory (And tell the sim to remove any copies of it from the sim).

In fact it might be best to have a REZZING tab the way we have a RECENT ITEMS tab.

Since at one UI Triage Benjamin Linden said quite clearly that "we don't have time to look at Bug Reports with no REPRO steps", I suggest they look at Kara Foley's comments. She lost her Huddles and the two replacements she was making in a two hour period.

I'd say that was a REPRO step. How many more does LL want; because this is costs money, not just to Kara, but to others as well. Unless the whole thing is a scheme to bilk residents out of money and as sore as I am at LL, i don't think they've sunk that low.

Kara will also be posting the form letter she got from LL, when you read it, you will see why with regards to this particular bug, a repro step is useless and to ask for one is tantamount to robbery.

Kaeko Pulford added a comment - 30/Jul/07 03:32 AM
It's getting worse. So far, items I've lost were tables, rugs, plants, and one very EXPENSIVE HUD I had to replace...but I knew about lag, and SL eating items, so I let it go.

Today, SL ate my friend's baby.

I know this is only a game. I know that it's not a real baby. But we have second lives to enjoy experiences again, and to roleplay wonderful new lives. That's the whole point of this game, to live a second life. She attempted to rezz her prim baby, and SL are it. She's had the baby for 1 day, and paid a very pretty price for it. Can you even begin to imagine how she feels now?? Can you imagine how close she is to leaving game??

This is a serious issue. It needs to be fixed. Before anything else, including stupid voice stuff.

Siiighhh I normally don't go out of my way to post in here. But this has got to STOP. I paid 4000+ to go thru a lengthy 6 week pregnancy......and 'gave birth' on Saturday evening. Last night as I was attempting to put the baby into his swing...BOOM.. he disappears into thin air! I was so increadily flustered, there are no words to describe. He was gone from inventory last night, even after clearing cache several times. And My attempts this morning seem to have gotten me nowhere I have been playing SL for a couple of years now, myself.. and if the new addition of things like voice is going to take us in the direction it is so far.. I'm packing my bags and closing everything down. Enough is enough!

Slow burn

I opened an individual ticket on this, and here's the response:

=============================================
THIS IS AN AUTOMATED RESPONSE, PLEASE DO NOT DIRECTLY REPLY TO THIS EMAIL.

We have solved your issue

Solution: Hi Kara,

Here is a checklist we have created to help you locate items that may have been lost.

START HERE

1. Clear your cache

This is a very important step. In many cases, your inventory is not lost and will show up after Second Life's cache is cleared.

  • Go to Edit menu > Preferences
  • Click the Network tab
  • Click the Clear Cache button
  • Exit Second Life

2. Login to a different region

The region you are in may have issues that prevent objects from rezzing in-world, or they may appear to missing from your inventory. Try relogging into a script-free region and try to rez your object there.

  • Go to Edit menu > Preferences
  • Click the General tab
  • Turn the option "Show Start location on Login Screen" on
  • Exit Second Life
  • Launch Second Life, but don't login
  • Locate "Start Location" below the First Name and Last Name fields
  • Type "Sandbox Newcomb" into Start Location
  • Click the Connect button

SEARCH TIPS

1. Learn about the Coalesce feature

When a group of objects get returned, they may be packed into a single object. This object that contains multiple objects is then placed back into your inventory. There is no easy way to identify which objects in your inventory may contain many multiple objects. Give the Knowledge Base article below a read.

2. Learn how to search your inventory and use inventory filters.

3. Do you know how to locate your objects in-world by using the Mini-Map?

The Mini-Map can be a useful resource that can assist you in locating objects in-world. Click the Mini-Map button at the bottom of Second Life's window. Objects owned by you will appear as light-blue dots on the Mini-Map.

4. Does the item send a message?

In many cases, it is possible to teleport directly to the location of the object.

Example: Help! I am lost at this location: Ahern/128/130/21

Looking at the example above, the region name is Ahern. The X, Y, Z coordinates would be 128, 130, 21.

  • Click the Map button
  • Type in the name of the region
  • Click the Search button
  • Select the region from the Search Results
  • For location, enter the X, Y, Z coordinates
  • Click the Teleport button

5. Select only my objects

The Tools menu has a useful option named "Select Only My Objects". This options allows you easily locate all of your objects.

  • Go to Tools menu > Select Only My Objects
  • Go to Tools menu > Select Tool > Edit
  • Click-and-drag the mouse to make a selection
  • Only your objects will be selected

6. Do you know how to hide the ground and water in Second Life?

Do you think the object you are looking for may be underground? Press Alt-Ctrl-Shift-5 to hide the ground in Second Life. Press Alt-Ctrl-Shift-7 to hide the water. After you have finished, use each of these key combinations to show the group and water.

7. Request a replacement

The resident or store you purchased an item from may be willing to replace an item that has been lost.

8. Give it a couple days

There have been cases were lost items have been restored after a couple days. If you have tried everything possible to locate a missing item, wait a while and try again.

WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED?

1. Did you get the error message 'Object missing from database?'

Give the steps "Clear your cache" and "Login to a different region" a try. If both the steps above fail, respond to this email to let us know.

2. How are you connected to the internet?

Are you using wireless or a satellite dish to connect to the internet? These types of connectivity are not supported because they may cause inventory issues due to massive packet loss.

3. Did you place your objects out of your inventory, place them in-world, and the region crashed soon afterwards?

The objects were likely lost when the region came back online. After a region crashes, it rolls back to a previous state. Sadly, there is no way to recover objects lost as a result of a region crash.

4. Does someone have rights to return or delete objects on your land? Did you leave an object on someone else's land?

It is possible someone may have returned or deleted or returned the object.

5. Did an inventory offer get declined because you were in Busy Mode?

Look in your Trash for the item.

6. Does anyone have modify rights to your objects?

Click the Friends button. Friends who have modify rights to your objects will have a small icon that looks like a hand holding a cube by their name. They may the taken or delete your objects, possibly by accident.

7. Did you drag the item itself or a folder of items from your inventory onto the ground?

If dragging a folder of items or an item from your inventory to the ground, you may have accidentally placed the items into another object, such as your house's floor or furniture.

8. Are you sure you didn't accidentally drag your items onto someone else's avatar?

If others were near, you can accidentally give another resident the items, especially if they're wearing huge attachments with transparent textures like wings, or some other attachment that may not be visually obvious.

Regards,

Frontier

Solved my issue? SOLVED MY ISSUE?????

I'll refrain from further comment, except to say the generic response made me almost as upset as losing the items in the first place. Time to get off your asses and FIX THIS ISSUE Linden Labs!!!

This just happened to me as well with a st andrews cross (don't ask), this STILL isn't fixed and if anything will make me leave this place its issues like this. FIX THIS NOW

aeslyn dae added a comment - 02/Aug/07 03:45 AM

This also happened to me yesterday with a couple of newly bought items. As far as I can see, this issue makes SL completely unreliable to use, apart from just chatting to friends or wandering around and sightseeing. No point spending time and money buying or making anything if it's more than likely to disappear at some arbitrary moment.

I've only just had the misfortune of experiencing it, but it seems this 'bug' has been reported for quite a while by many users with no fix or further information or warnings forthcoming. Surely it's a MAJOR problem that needs top priority to fix!

I, for one, don't want voice or windlight or any other fancy additions unless and until the basic system has decent stability and inventories can be better relied upon to be safe - otherwise what's the point of a premium account?

Hi all, Spike Linden pointed me here and I've been keeping an eye on related issues – losing inventory due to bugs is very troubling and we care a lot about fixing the problems that cause it.

I've left numerous comments in other issues, but will emphasize that while we'll certainly report news about progress we make on specific content loss bugs, trying the steps in Frontier Linden's email – all of them – are highly recommended to ensure that you aren't experiencing a false positive. (And we actually do get a lot of those.) So even if you think, "It's definitely gone! Fix it now!", please take the time to go through that so you can confirm. Saying "me too" let us know you're possibly affected as well, but don't give us further info to work on. We need as specific details from you as possible when you contact support.

In the future, we also want to make failed inventory transfer messages more descriptive, so even if you lose something, that info may clearer help us pinpoint where things went wrong. (Internal ID for that is SL-50020.)

I'll let our devs and other Lindens focusing on critical issues like this know.

Please don't use the Issue Tracker for ranting, it just makes it harder for us to help you.

I'll resolve this issue as a dupe of the better-described SVC-114, please be sure to look within for details.

I am having trouble rezzing items. I am on my parcel, wearing the appropriate tag and frequently get the "failed to place object" error (when there is nothing there but me and the ground) or no error notification at all, the item just doesn't rez. Tired of it. As far as I can see I am not losing the items, they remain in inventory and will rez later. Should rez the first time tho.

Thanks.

Betty

The problem's back and we are NOT going duplicate it because we just lost a L$895 Couples animator and are not gonna throw out more money.
