 Description  « Hide
Advertising in the MOTD is a very unwelcome corruption of a feature that I have come to rely on for urgent and important communication from Linden Labs. I suggest not putting ads there anymore. The attached screenshot shows the kind of ads that I mean.

Though it has been suggested at https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-14039 to create several channels for MOTD messages so that users may opt out of ads, I really don't think that proposal goes far enough. There are lots of places to put ads. Let's just not have them on a screen that all users are forced to look at, and that has traditionally been reserved for impartial, non-commercial information.

Edited to clarify: The ads at issue are not the typical "Come visit SL6B!" kind of announcements we're used to seeing. They're ads for renting land from 3rd party estate holders like Azure Islands or RGF Estates.

That's true and is what I think. However, nothing seems to work very well for important messages, so perhaps there should just be a blinking exclamation point onscreen (not just at login) when there's news, meaning "Check status" or something. That would help those inworld at times of "don't rez no-copy objects."

I am glad you raised this Issue Nandana, it's been annoying me for some time, and not just because it's irritating and a waste of an information resource, it is also biased and anti-competitive (imo). LL goes to such lengths to reduce the amount of billboards and ad's on the mainland, it's sad to see them stoop to this kind of thing.

I have always read the motd, but now, they hided ad's there, it went to my internal spam filter, so for "Stop putting ads in the MOTD" it'S too late. I've already stopped reading them.

Mixing 3rd party ads in with what was previously official messages is severely undermining LL's status as an infrastructure provider for a virtual world. This is akin to an ISP injecting ads into the HTML pages they deliver over their lines.

I think it completely has defeated it's purpose, I switched to an automatic login, as I became tired of LL advertising private sim land sales, and what not. It defeats the purpose of updating people of the things they need or want to know. I am personally getting tired of SL moving further away from a user focused world to a profit ONLY focused world. It seems each week,ok, each year, I am becoming less and less confident of the decision making process of Linden Labs.

I completely agree, it is annoying to a point that I have stopped reading the MOTD, or paying it much attention anyway, let alone cliking on the provided shortened urls.

Voted.

Our RL is already overloaded with annoying adds...
Please keep it away from my dream world.

What a bad idea! - What about "fair chances to ALL ?" This is just another try to squeeze some money out of it and to make the big players bigger.

The MOTD should be a way to inform players about urgent and important things going on and not stuff like "Hey, all buy from XY now because they are the best ... " What a crap.
